The Sardis architect's manual and supporting materials

Toris, James M. January 2004 (has links)
This project represents the comprehensive study of architectural duties on an archaeological excavation known as the Archaeological Exploration of Sardis. This project is meant to serve as an overview of the duties and expectations of an architectural staff member for recruitment and enrichment purposes. The project is divided into 5 main categories: The Sardis Architecture Manual, recruitment lecture transcript, an exhibit of Ball State University staff and student work pertaining to the excavation, an analysis of the future of architectural recording at Sardis, and process work done in the completion of the project. In the future, the Archaeological Exploration of Sardis may not have the necessary Senior Architects to train the new Student Architects from Ball State University. It is hoped that this project will allow new Architect staff members to properly perform the duties pertaining to an archaeological excavation with a minimum of training from senior members. / Department of Architecture

Teaching language arts by the use of mass communications concepts : a handbook for secondary school teachers : a creative project

Callender, Robert Charles January 1977 (has links)
This creative project is a handbook for teaching language arts by the use of mass media concepts. It is divided into four sections: radio (audio), television (video), newspaper, and magazine (printed media) with a total of 33 exercises. Exercises are based on commonly accepted program and sectional breakdowns of the mass media. Exercises are divided into twelve parts: (1) Title, (2) Medium, (3) Description (This is a. synopsis of the exercise.), (4) language Arts Tie-ins (This explains some of the direct applications of the exercise.), (5) Purpose and Objectives, (6) Materials and Equipment, (7) Advance Preparation, (8) Preliminary Activities, (9) Review Skills and Background Information (This suggests the academic material that could be presented.), (10) Activity Procedures, (11) Time Required, and (12) Additional Assignments (These have been included in appropriate areas.)The handbook is to be used by language arts teachers to supplement their classroom program and serve as a motivational tool. Exercises are designed so that teachers can use the handbook using whatever equipment is available.

The effect of a series of hands-on, minds-on science process skill development experiences on general readiness scores of a selected group of kindergarten children

Bardsley, Sarah C. January 1988 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of short-term Hands-On, Minds-On science process skills on the acquisition of general readiness to learn by kindergarten children.Three null hypotheses were formulated to examine differences between the scores of an experimental group of kindergarten children who had engaged in Hands-On, Minds-On science process investigation and a control group of kindergarten children who had not engaged in such investigation. The students engaged in approximately eight hours of science process investigation. Differences due to sex were examined in Hypothesis II. Differences which may be attributed to student ability as measured by the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test were examined in Hypothesis III.A fourth factor, class effect was also examined. The research utilized a modified Posttest-Only Control Group design. The posttest was the California Achievement Test, Level 10, Form E.The participants for the study were 86 kindergarten students from four intact classes. The control group was comprised of 47 students and the experimental group a total of 39 students. These students attended a small rural school corporation with a enrollment of approximately 1,240 students. The use of the Wilk's Lambda Multivariate Tests of Significance yielded the following information at the .05 level of significance:No significant difference was found between children who had or had not engaged in Hands-On, Minds-On science process instruction. The significance of F between the two groups was .106.No significant difference was found based on sex differences of the students who participated in this study. The significance of F between males and females was .917.A significant difference was found between high and low ability students who participated in this study. The significance of F to three places, between the two groups was .000.A four-way univariate analysis of variance analogous to the multivariate analysis was performed on each component of the vector (Visual Recognition, Sound Recognition, Reading Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension, Language Expression, and Mathematics) and tested at the .05 level of significance. The results indicated that each component of the vector was significant at the .05 level with the independent variable ability.Based on the researcher's findings recommendations for further research were made. Two of the most promising were increased science time for student participation and development of a test which measures a broader spectrum of the curriculum, including science. / Department of Elementary Education

An intervention for enhancing the mathematics teaching practices of grade four teachers in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan area

Botha, Adele January 2011 (has links)
Mathematics is regarded as a driving force in economies worldwide. The performance of South African learners in mathematics over the past decade has highlighted that problems are being experienced across all grades. This situation needs to be addressed with urgency. The South African Department of Education stated that quality learning must be the objective for all grades. The implementation of good teaching practices plays a crucial role in improving the quality of education and in guiding learners towards quality learning. To achieve quality mathematics teaching and learning it is imperative to determine what good mathematics teaching practices are. The identification of good mathematic teaching practices will provide a yard stick to measure the mathematics teaching competency of teachers. This study identifies a set of good mathematics teaching practice indicators and evidences applicable to teachers in the Intermediate phase as a first contribution. These indicators and evidences frame the second research contribution: an assessment instrument entitled “A Classroom Observation Tool for Observing Mathematics Teaching Practices in Primary Schools”. As a third research contribution a generic profile of a Grade four mathematics teacher has been built. This generic profile has been built through an analysis of data gathered by means of self-assessment questionnaires completed by the research sample, as well as through applying the observation tool. The value of the generic profile lies in the identification of shared strengths and shared improvement opportunities in the mathematics teaching practice of the sample and as such, it forms the basis of a theory on Grade four mathematics teaching practice. The fourth research contribution is the design and application of an intervention that addresses the shared improvement opportunities. The research study concludes by comparing pre-intervention classroom observation data with post-intervention classroom observation data and reporting on the impact of the intervention.
