Krize maskulinity mezi chimérou a stereotypem. Gender a česká společnost na přelomu 19. a 20. století / Crisis of masculinity between chimaera and stereotype. Gender and Czech society on the turn of 19th and 20th century

Mareš, Jan January 2012 (has links)
1 Abstract This paper asks, whether a crisis of masculinity can be found in Czech political movements and communities at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. We analyze the development of gender orders between 1870 and 1910. There the imagination of separated spheres created an asymmetric gender order, yet partial shifts were evident. The ideals of masculinity and feminity were influenced through nationalism, which led to an emotionalization of masculinity by the beginning of the 20th century. The integration into the national body enabled the feminity to take positive use of the prevailing stereotypes. A change came after 1900, when the idea of degeneration appeared, attacking the contemporary form of masculinity denotating it as false. It follows a case study of the emergence of the Czech scouting. The establishment of scouting in Britain and America is today interpreted as a reaction to the crisis of masculinity, which makes it a good starting point for observing the crisis in another culture. The crisis manifested itself indirectly, on an abstract level, as a criticism of the state of the culture. Some of the scout founders considered this an opportunity, to set up a new culture by colonizing the nature (a feminine attribute). There were presuppositions for a feeling of crisis in the Czech...

En bild säger mer än tusen ord : En analys av GQ Magazines omslagsbilder och årskurs 9 elevers tolkning av dem / A picture says more than thousand words : An analysis of GQ Magazine´s cover images and ninth grade student´s views of them

Häggblom, Jeanette, Lindahl, Emma January 2015 (has links)
A picture says more than thousand words - an analysis of GQ Magazine´s cover images and ninth grade student´s views of them is an essay in media and communication studies covering 15 hp. This essay examines how men and women are depicted on the cover of GQ Magazine and how ninth grade students perceive these images. Our research questions are: How is gender presented in cover images? How do the students interpret these images? What possible differencies or similarities are there? Our theoretical framework is based on gender theory. Methods used are a survey conducted at Tegs Central school and a semiotic analysis of the cover images. We have to keep in mind that the cover images already have a stereotypical representation of the women and men, and that will automaticly affect the students answers. The essay shows that the semiotic studie describes profound thaughts on connotation terms. The survey studie shows that the students have the ability to analyse GQ Magazine´s cover images in a denotation level. Since the social problem is about what images says and what possible affect they have on the viewer. It is therefore important to have a critical mind when it comes to analyse images and be aware of these general representations of gender.

Könsnormer i bildklassrummet: : en studie av killars uppfattningar om bildämnet / Gender norms in the art classroom: : a study about boys’ perception of the art subject

Wigårde, Jessika January 2024 (has links)
Boys perform generally inadequately compared to girls in Swedish schools. The biggest gap is shown in the artistical and practical subjects, no less in art class. When comparing the grades in the art subject of students graduating ninth grade the schoolyear of 2021/2022, the statistics show that most girls got C or higher, while a majority of boys got C or lower. This isn’t unique to this specific schoolyear and has been a reality for a long time. The overall purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between the statistics and boys’ attitude towards the art subject and to get a deeper understanding of their perception of art classes. The study focuses on the male students' perception of the art subject in the light of gender and norms. When analyzing the discourse in the interviews, the results show that male students appreciate and value the subject, but still perceive it as a subject for girls. In an effort to follow gender norms they use humor to distance themselves from subjects they perceive as feminine-coded. The conclusion of this study suggests that the male students create a counter action against femineity in an effort to create a masculine identity that ultimately reflect negatively on their approach to the art subject.

Toxická maskulinita v hrané tvorbě: případová studie Teorie velkého třesku / Toxic Masculinity in Live Action Cinematography: The Big Bang Theory Case Study

Hiblerová, Adéla January 2020 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with expressions of toxic masculinity in television acting, illustrated on the case study of the television show The Big Bang Theory. This work sets the term toxic masculinity in the context of masculinity studies and draws on the theory of hegemonic masculinity formulated by the Australian sociologist Raewyn Connell. Her theory assumes the existence of multiple, hierarchically ordered masculinities, with hegemonic masculinity - considered by some authors tobe synonymous with toxic masculinity - on top. This work also surveys the history of the representation of the male hero from the early days of American cinema up to the present, as the empirical section deals primarily with an American television show. Special emphasis is put on the "nerd" character, who represents non- hegemonic masculinity and thus does not tend to be associated with expressions of toxic masculinity, although he is also guilty of this behavior. The aim of this thesis was to use qualitative content analysis to identify manifestations of toxic masculine behavior by the nerd characters of the popular sitcom The Big Bang Theory and to determine how this behavior differs from that of the "jock" character, an embodiment of hegemonic masculinity. This research reached the conclusion that each of these two...

Chlapec nebo dívka / BABY BOY OR BABY GIRL

Zákostelná, Lucie January 2013 (has links)
The thesis is mainly focused on the analysis and evaluation of the effects influencing the sex ratio of live births. After studying of the foreign language literature, main factors influencing the sex ratio are defined. Data used in the thesis (births by the sex) are retrieved from The Human Mortality Database, database of United Nations Statistics Division and from particular statistical offices. Based on the results of the exploratory data analysis, countries with unreliable data (data skewed due to the manipulation or due to the not appropriate standard of the registration of born) are specified. Subsequently, the countries with abnormal values of the sex ratio at birth resulting from the cultural traditions or technological development are defined. For countries with not evident influence of the factors mentioned the analysis of the relations and dependencies between sex ratio at birth and variables chosen (groups of the geographical, socioeconomics and demographical impacts). On the basis of this analysis it has been proved that the sex ratio at birth depends primarily, but not exclusively, on the total fertility rate and life expectancy.

Vztah morfologie obličeje a fyzické síly: Testování hypotézy Other-Race efektu / The relationship between facial morphology and physical strength: Testing of the Other-Race effect hypothesis

Klusáčková, Tereza January 2019 (has links)
Existing evidence shows people are able to attribute an individual's behavioural characteristics based on their facial features with a certain level of accuracy; one such characteristic is the perception of physical strength in potential opponents within the male intersexual competition. Physical strength seems be assessed upon the level of masculine facial features development. However, attributions may be influenced by other factors - namely personality traits of the evaluator or the so-called Other-race effect. In this study portrait photographs of men from Europe and Africa were rated by a group of European evaluators on a perceived physical strength. The aim of this study was to assess the link between attributed physical strength, actual physical strength (grip strength) and facial morphology described by relative facial width (fWHR) the Index of Masculinity (potential effects of age, body weight and height on said variables were controlled for). The use of stimuli of different ethnic origin enabled us to test the accuracy of physical strength attributions and actual physical strength in context to the Other-race effect hypothesis. According to its wording people tend to attribute characteristics with higher accuracy to individuals, who belong to the same population, or with whom they are...

Skopalová, Monika January 2013 (has links)
UNIVERZITA KARLOVA V PRAZE FAKULTA HUMANITNÍCH STUDIÍ Katedra genderových studií Bc. Monika Skopalová Liga otevřených mužů: případová studie Diplomová práce Vedoucí práce: Ing. Petr Pavlík, Ph.D. Praha 2013 ABSTRACT This work is an attempt to contribute to the development of men's studies as a relevant academic field, which still does not have sufficient background in the Czech Republic. It captures work of the most visible so-called men's organization in CR - the League of Open Men (LOM). Qualitative content analysis based on feminist tradition includes data collected from interviews and thematic articles of LOM's representatives, and especially data from my own interview with Václav Šneberger, one of the organization's founders. The aim of analysis was to clarify ideological basis, values and theoretical concepts which LOM implicitly uses, to explore its relationship to feminist movement and so-called women's organizations, and also to find out its understanding of masculinity/ies and the way in which LOM discursively works with this concept of gender. The analysis revealed that although LOM presented itself as non-academic and non-gender organization which has no ideologies, theoretical basis or definitions and instructions in the "right manhood", it is more a purposeful strategy concealing the fact that...

The Powerpuff Girls vs. Sailor Moon : En jämförelse av två animerade barnprograms underliggande diskurser / The Powerpuff Girls vs. Sailor Moon

Lörtscher, Yasmin January 2014 (has links)
This study is about underlying discourses of two tv-series for children from opposite parts of the globe. Focus lays on which morals and values adults choose to teach children through popular culture, even on an unaware basis and how does differ, or not, between different societies. The theoretical framework chosen for this study are semiotics in combination with the concept of the gaze by Laura Mulvey. Semiotics is the study of signs and their underlying meanings constructed by society. By studying popular culture with the tools provided by semiotic analysis it is possible to discouver underlying myths, social constructions of society, that are reproduced over and over again to remain alive. Mulveys theory of the gaze is helpfull in the process of decoding those constructions to discover the dominant partys and norms represented. In this particular study underlying structures such as patriarcal power relations, unequality between the representation of different ethnicities and the consistent presents of the male gaze where discovered. The conclusions made are that some social constructions are more global then others and that popular culture in a high degree mirrors societies norms, preferences and values.

Vliv demografických změn na technickou infrastrukturu obcí v České republice - případová studie odpadového hospodářství / Impact of demographic changes on municipal technical infrastructure in the Czech Republic - case study of waste management

Rybová, Kristýna January 2018 (has links)
Impact of demographic changes on municipal technical infrastructure in the Czech Republic - case study of waste management Abstract The aim of this study is to quantify the impact of demographic development on the current household production of municipal waste in the Czech Republic and at the same time to compare their influence with the impact of other factors. Based on a literature review and statistical data available for the Czech Republic, a set of 22 explanatory variables concerning structure of population by age, gender, highest education and employment, as well as the size of households, unemployment, purchasing power, population density and basic characteristics of housing was identified in order to explain the production of municipal solid waste, mixed municipal waste and separately collected waste components (glass and plastics). It has turned out that demographic variables, especially the average household size, gender, age, level of education or sector of employment have a statistically significant but rather weak impact on the production of these waste streams. Given that the detailed analysis of the variables indicated that there is a significant spatial variability of these characteristics and that they exhibit spatial non- stationarity, the next step was to analyze the relationship of the...
