A separate chapter provides an overview of the subjects taught with media themes at faculties of education. Využití médií v hodinách angličtiny na středních školách v 21. století / Use of Media in the EFL Classrooms at Secondary Schools in the 21st Century

Slavíková, Lucie January 2014 (has links)
Title: The Use of Media in the EFL Classrooms at Secondary Schools in the 21st Century Author: Bc. Lucie Slavíková Department: Department of English Language and Literature Supervisor: PhDr. Radek Vít, Ph.D. Abstract The aim of this diploma thesis is to explore and compare various types of the old and the new media, which are commonly used in the EFL classrooms at the Czech secondary schools in the 21st century. The key question is to what extent are the new media implemented into the English lessons at the Czech grammar and secondary technical and vocational schools. The findings of the online questionnaire survey, which was conducted on the random sample of the Czech secondary school teachers of English and on the sample of the 15 or 16 years old first grade secondary school students of English proved that both the old and the new media are commonly used in the English lessons. However, despite the fact that the lives of the 21st century students are largely influenced by the new media, the English teachers use the old media more often. It is recommended that more initiatives and programmes should be directed at the promotion of the implementation of the new media into the English lessons and also at the training of the teachers in using them effectively. Key words English language teaching, media...

Investigating Approaches to Media Literacy: An Analysis of Media Literacy Organizations

Unknown Date (has links)
Media literacy is a competency needed for success in the 21st century yet a clear purpose does not exist that is useful in curriculum design. The purpose of this study was to investigate a combined (eclectic) approach to media literacy education according to selected international media literacy organizations. Determining an eclectic approach from subject area experts will be useful in designing and integrating media literacy curriculum. Methodologically, this study was a qualitative content analysis and is thematic in nature using a constant comparative method of analysis. Supporting frameworks were established through standards based curriculum development and Schwab’s (1969, 1971, 1973, 1983) ideas of practical deliberation. Purposive heterogeneous sampling was utilized in identifying media literacy organizations from countries considered leaders in media education. This included organizations from Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The primary approaches throughout all identified countries include an arts, critical, literacy, protectionist, and tool approach to media literacy. Through the process of curriculum deliberation, it is necessary to reconcile these approaches into one eclectic approach. Although individual subject areas may focus on one approach, it is important to consider all approaches equally during curriculum deliberation. In comparing an eclectic approach to Florida language arts standards (modeled after the Common Core State Standards), it was discovered that an eclectic approach to media literacy is not present. These standards focus almost exclusively on a literacy approach despite state statue requiring the full integration of media literacy. Language arts standards also remain focused on print media despite acknowledging that students should be prepared for success in the 21st century. This is a media saturated world and every subject should implement media literacy principles and approaches that prepare students to succeed in it. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2016. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Quem educará os educadores? A educomunicação e a formação de docentes em serviço / Who educates the educators? Educommunication and teachers formation

Siqueira, Juliana Maria de 06 May 2009 (has links)
The possibilities and the limits of teachers formation, for a critical and dialogic assimilation of media and its languages, in classrooms, are investigated through the case study of Pedagogia da Imagem course, offered by Museu da Imagem e do Som de Campinas, during 2006-2007. Watching the formation situation as a communicational phenomenon, a reception study was developed, with focus on the cultural mediations that act on it, the context in which it happens and the meanings produced and legitimated by its participants. Settled on the field that goes through the areas of Communication and Education, named Educommunication, the research has an ethical and political commitment to build the autonomy of the individuals of the educational process, and it is supported by the concepts of reflexivity and professionalization, and the social approach to teachers formation as well. The methodic building was raised from the Structuration Theory, of A. Giddens, originating analysis categories that articulate three dimensions: subjective ones (meanings of/on pedagogical practice), structural ones (school context and its sociopolitical and economic determinations) and collective ones (professional identities and consciousness). The data collection associated quantitative procedures (applied to the whole group of participants) and qualitative ones (in-depth studies developed with four public schools). The results point to the complexity of the aspects involved on creation and evaluation of successful programs for teachers formation, and to the importance of developing educommunicational projects on school environment.

Senioři ve světě nových médií / Old People and new media

Lacinová, Eva January 2012 (has links)
This thesis deals with problems of media literacy of older people. Its main goal is to capture the way seniors can reflect and evaluate new media. It does not attempt to provide specific and universally valid reply to observed problems, but the intention of the work is rather to understand phenomena and conditions of the problems. The text is therefore divided into three main sections: theoretical, practical and analytical. In the theoretical part key information and concepts associated with communication, media literacy, and age and growing old are introduced. Special attention is paid to the description of relationship between seniors and new media. The practical part is devoted to qualitative research. Information about the way older respondents use and evaluate new media is acquired through semi-standardized depth interviews. The analytical part results from the findings presented in the previous two sections. It serves not only as major conclusions of the work but also as notes and recommendation for further studies or researches. All relevant and essential facts are summarized in the conclusion of the paper.

Media Literacy Education Exposure related to Self-Esteem, Body Esteem, and Sociocultural Ideals in College Students and Graduates

Stargardt, Tammy 01 January 2015 (has links)
The prevalence of eating disorders (ED) in the United States has increased while the media consistently presents thinner representations of the body. Scholars have found media to negatively influence factors associated with the development of EDs. The purpose of this quantitative nonexperimental cross-sectional survey design study was to explore relationships between exposure levels to MLE and self-esteem, body esteem, and the internalization societal appearance ideals. Participants included undergraduate students or recent graduates majoring in either communications or an alternative major with comparatively less MLE curriculum. The Body Esteem Scale, Sociocultural Attitudes towards Appearance Questionnaire-3, and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale Surveys were administered online to examine the variance of 3 dependent variables (self-esteem, body esteem, internalization of societal appearance norms) with 2 independent variables (exposure levels to media literacy curriculum and gender), and a multivariate analysis of variance was used to analyze the data. Results displayed statistically significant differences between all 3 dependent variables with MLE levels. Research in MLE benefits both adults and children by way of providing the necessary tools, knowledge, and skills to be able to fully benefit from various media sources. MLE provides an opportunity to better understand media messages, as well as its influences therein, this way rather than being vulnerable and easily manipulated, one becomes a more knowledgeable and aware media consumer. The results to this study can promote, advocate, and bring awareness to media consumers and today's educators of the importance and need of MLE curriculum beginning at a young age.
