Design and modeling of acoustic and elastic metamaterials by Mie resonances.

Arredondo Champi, Hipolito Alan 12 September 2012 (has links)
The acoustic/elastic metamaterials are materials that show different elastic features from common materials found in nature and their main characteristics are their negative refractive index. The literature reports that this property is reached for a very narrow range of frequencies, as a very localized phenomenon, and additionally, the proposed structures are extremely ideals, which makes its practical application difficult on acoustic devices. The objective of this work was to design acoustic/elastic three-dimensional Metamaterials with negative refractive index in a wider frequency band than that reported in the literature, and using geometries and materials that make it possible their practical implementation for manufacturing acoustic/elastic devices. With this purpose a formalism of the effective medium theory (EMT) was developed, in the limit of wavelength and low fill fractions. With the developed EMT, the scattering of simple spherical inclusions, coated and doubly coated in different host substrates were studied. The results showed the existence of resonant bands in the coefficients of the T matrix related to monopolar, dipolar and quadrupolar modes. Composite materials consisting of simple, coated or double coated spheres were analyzed using the EMT formalism. The results showed that the negative values of elastic parameters in these materials are completely related to resonant effects of the spheres of inclusion. Elastic and acoustic Metamaterials were designed by overlaying two or more different composites, each with different properties, such that the overall effect on the metamaterial shows the desired features defined in the initial project. The elastic metamaterial was designed by overlapping three different composites of different spherical inclusions. This metamaterial shows negative refractive index in the region of 2 kHz, in a band of width of 80 Hz. The acoustic metamaterial was designed by overlapping two composites of different spherical inclusions. This material shows negative refractive index in the region of 7 kHz, in a band of width of 500 Hz. The geometries and materials used in the design of these Metamaterials are affordable and easy to handle, which will facilitate their future fabrication in the laboratory. The results obtained in this study suggest the possibility to manufacture these metamaterials in the laboratory and use them in the control of acoustic, elastic and seismic waves, as well as in the design of invisible cloak.

Terahertzové záření v nanostrukturách / Terahertz radiation in nanostructures

Klimovič, Filip January 2019 (has links)

Behavior Evolution Studies of Food Shooting Addicts

Chen, Szu Lin Unknown Date (has links)
關鍵詞:影像食物戀、媒介情境論、自媒體、社群傳播 / Nowadays, corresponding to the widespread of smartphones and mobile devices, the most popular scenes are that people keep on sliding and checking their mobile phones, taking pictures of fine food, and sharing them in social media communities, which has become a viral phenomenon. This research is based on the Medium Theory by Joshua Meyrowitz and Social Capital Theory by Pierre Bourdieu, in order to understand the behavior evolution of “food shooting addicts,” persons who love to take fine food pictures and upload them to social media communities. Its methodologies include content analysis, in-depth interview, and ethnographic participation and observation. The study finds that there are two stages and six phases in the behavior evolution of food shooting addicts. Primary stage includes: record, share and learn. Advanced stage includes: show-off, becoming opinion leaders and “we media” of fine food. Through their presentation in social media, packaged by beautiful fine food pictures and related stories, food shooting addicts build up their taste capital and achieve the goal of raising up their uniqueness and taste. Développement et évaluation d'une théorie de milieu effectif combinée à un facteur de structure polydisperse pour la caractérisation ultrasonore de l'agrégation érythrocytaire / Development and validation of an effective medium theory combined to a polydisperse structure factor for modeling the scattering by aggregating red blood cells

Monchy, Romain de 16 December 2016 (has links)
This thesis aims to develop and evaluate a scattering model for aggregating blood, taking into account the high volume fraction of red blood cells in blood (40%) and the polydispersity in terms of aggregate size. The effective medium theory combined with the monodisperse structure factor model was recently developed to estimate blood microstructure. In order to improve the modeling at high frequency range, we proposed an effective medium theory that takes into account the incoherent component of the scattering by aggregates of RBCs. Three dimensional simulations were performed and showed that the consideration of the incoherent component allows to approximate the simulation satisfactorily for a product of the wavenumber times the aggregates radius $kR$ up to 2. Besides, we proposed an effective medium theory combined with a polydisperse structure factor. From the measured BSC, this model allows to estimate three structural parameters: the mean radius of the aggregate size distribution, the width of the distribution, and the compactness of the aggregates. Experiments were performed on pig blood shared in a Couette device coupled with an ultrasonic probe, and showed that the polydisperse modeling provides better fitting to the experimental BSC data, when compared to the classical monodisperse models. Satisfactory correlation is obtained (r$^2$ $\approx$ 0.92) between the aggregate sizes estimated with ultrasound and the aggregate sizes estimated on the same sample in an optical device.

Characterization of gold black and its application in un-cooled infrared detectors

Panjwani, Deep 01 January 2015 (has links)
Gold black porous coatings were thermally evaporated in the chamber backfilled with inert gas pressure and their optical properties were studied in near-far-IR wavelengths. The porosities of coatings were found to be extremely high around ~ 99%. Different approaches of effective medium theories such as Maxwell-Garnett, Bruggeman, Landau-Lifshitz-Looyenga and Bergman Formalism were utilized to calculate refractive index (n) and extinction coefficient (k). The aging induced changes on electrical and optical properties were studied in regular laboratory conditions using transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and fore-probe electrical measurements. A significant decrease in electrical resistance in as deposited coating was found to be consistent with changes in the granular structure with aging at room temperature. Electrical relaxation model was applied to calculate structural relaxation time in the coatings prepared with different porosities. Interestingly, with aging, absorptance of the coatings improved, which is explained using conductivity form of Bergman Formulism. Underlying aim of this work was to utilize gold blacks to improve sensitivity in un-cooled IR sensors consist of pixel arrays. To achieve this, fragile gold blacks were patterned on sub-mm length scale areas using both stenciling and conventional photolithography. Infrared spectral imaging with sub-micron spatial resolution revealed the spatial distribution of absorption across the gold black patterns produced with both the methods. Initial experiments on VOx-Au bolometers showed that, gold black improved the responsivity by 42%. This work successfully establishes promising role of gold black coatings in commercial un-cooled infrared detectors.
