How Worldly is the World Digital Library? : Postcolonial Critical Discourse Analysis of the Library of Congress Subject Headings

Oliphant, Woody January 2019 (has links)
Based on previous researchers’ criticism of Euro-American bias inherent to universal analogue and digital knowledge organisation systems, this combined qualitative and quantitative postcolonial critical discourse analysis investigates the constructed meanings behind the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) controlled vocabulary hosted by the Word Digital Library’s (WDL) metadata scheme. This is done with a sample of metadata pertaining to their African cultural heritage collection. The study aims to see if the restricted controlled vocabulary exclude and marginalise situated African knowledge thereby conflicting with their ideological imperative of promoting international understanding. The use of postcolonial theory and discourse analysis theory as both the analytical theoretical framework and methodological approach, reveal that Westerncentric terms from colonial discourse dominate but do not constitute the entirety of the discourses represented by the subject headings. Relying on the assumption that the cataloguers select subject headings based on the rule of literary warrant, the reason for this preference imply an unbalanced collection rather than a biased knowledge organisation system. Therefore, the study suggests the creation of positive rhetorical spaces (Olson, 2002) by adding preferred terms that stem from marginalised situated knowledge systems that too are represented by the existing resources. This will allow for several discourses to co-exist achieving thereby a better fit with the culturally inclusionary aims of the WDL not dependent on the limits of their collection. Also acknowledged is metadata’s pragmatic rationale in support of standardisation for enhanced search and discoverability, but questioned is the sustainability of this principle if the goal is to promote equitable understanding and representation to a wide and international user group. Ultimately, recognising the bias within knowledge organisation systems will serve inclusivity more, rather than traditional claims of universality which conceal exclusion.

Models for Risk assessment of Mobile applications

Ikwuegbu, Chigozie Charles January 2020 (has links)
Mobile applications are software that extend the functionality of our smartphones by connecting us with friends and a wide range of other services. Android, which is an operating system based on the Linux kernel, leads the market with over 2.6 million applications recorded on their official store. Application developers, due to the ever-growing innovation in smartphones, are compelled to release new ideas on limited budget and time, resulting in the deployment of malicious applications. Although there exists a security mechanism on the Google Play Store to remove these applications, studies have shown that most of the applications on the app store compromise privacy or pose security-related risks. It is therefore essential to investigate the security risk of installing any of these applications on a device. The objectives are to identify methods and techniques for assessing mobile application security, investigate how attributes indicate the harmfulness of applications, and evaluate the performance of K Nearest Neighbors(K-NN) and Random forest machine learning models in assessing the security risk of installing mobile applications based on information available on the application distribution platform. A literature analysis was done to gather information on the different methods and techniques for assessing security in mobile applications and investigations on how different attributes on the application distribution platform indicate the harmfulness of an application. An experiment was also conducted to examine how various machine learning models perform in evaluating the security risk associated with installing applications, based on information on the application distribution platform. Literature analysis presents the various methods and techniques for mobile application security assessment and identifies how mobile application attributes indicate the harmfulness of mobile applications. The experimental results demonstrate the performance of the aforementioned machine learning models in evaluating the security risk of installing mobile applications. In conclusion, Static, dynamic, and grey-box analysis are the methods used to evaluate mobile application security, and machine learning models including K-NN and Random forest are suitable techniques for evaluating mobile application security risk. Attributes such as the permissions, number of installations, and ratings reveal the likelihood and impact of an underlying security threat. The K-NN and Random forest models when compared to evaluate the security risk of installing mobile applications based on information on the application distribution platform showed high performance with little differences.

Hirsch, Erik 07 June 2021 (has links)

UI of Search on Video Assets: Development of Advanced Features

Heimdahl, Oscar January 2021 (has links)
In the cloud based video post-production industry, video files possessing large amounts of metadata is very common. When working with such files, a search interface with functionality that takes advantage of this data, with functions such as filtering, creating specific queries, and searching for the videos content, could greatly increase the ease of use of handling a large amount of files. In this thesis a high fidelity prototype is developed of a search feature on said video assets in a web-based video platform. The prototyping process consisted of iteratively designing prototypes with more and more fidelity, with design choices supported by user testing and expert evaluation. A total of three different design-iterations were made, one of low, medium and high fidelity, as well as a proof of concept for the creation of search tags. Each iteration was based on the result of the testing and evaluation of the previous iteration. The final prototype features a faceted search system of checkboxes and search tags for different video properties, that was well received by user tests and evaluation alike. The faceted search was found to be very efficient and easy to use for this application. The search tags was well understood and showed potential for ”pro functionality” as the interface becomes more complex and more features are added, they were in the current design however, arguably not needed as users preferred to use other parts of the interface. The overall layout of the design was also found to potentially require a redesign, depending of the kind of metadata present in a real world scenario, to fit the faceted search which dynamically change with the availability of metadata on the files.
