(In)Visible Presence: Narratives of inclusion and exclusion in a Milanese public space

Merelli, Giulia January 2020 (has links)
Urban public space is arguably far from the pacified, freely accessible, democratic space which Western normative literature proposes. It is a site of contention, where different interests, norms and perceptions over appropriate uses and presence come into conflict. The visual is a relevant dimension to understand this process: in fact, claims to space by people with a visible migratory background are often problematized by the media and often responded to with securitization practices. This study contributes to gain insight into spatial practices and the manner in which visibility and invisibility are experienced and strategically influenced by Othered subjects in Piazza Duca D´Aosta, a Milanese square. The result is a case study on the paradoxical meanings that are associated with re-territorialization practices in public space, on a continuum between domestication and detachment, as well as an exploration of the complex relation between visibility as an experience and a practice.

Roberge, Valérie 19 April 2018 (has links)

Natálie Gorbaněvská v české recepci a překladech / Natalya Gorbanevskayaʼs reception and translation in the Czech Republic

Vaňková, Zuzana January 2019 (has links)
The present diploma thesis investigates Czec sociopolitical and translation reception of poet, journalist and dissident Natalya Gorbanevskaya. The thesis bases on the context from the Moscow Red Square demonstration against the occupation of Czechoslovakia in August 1968 and maps its reception, which is above all in the Czech Republic an inseparable part of the image of this personage. Further, it introduces the life, literary output and poetics of Gorbanevskaya and makes translatological analysis of Czech translations of authorial parts from her book Red Square at Noon, cycle of eight-line-poems "Place de la non-Concorde" (Площадь несогласия) and other particular poems. Inseparable part of the thesis is also an interview with the author of Czech translations Milan Dvořák.

Tessellata vitrea in età tardoantica e altomedievale: archeologia, tecnologia, archeometria. Il caso di Milano / Tessellata vitrea in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages: archaeology, technology, archaeometry. The case of Milan

NERI, ELISABETTA 30 March 2012 (has links)
The thesis studies the production and layout of wall mosaic tesserae and of glass paste sectilia in late antique and early medieval times, focusing in particular on the case of Milan. The first part examines the productive process of glass mosaics to reconstruct the commercial and cultural exchanges of the studied period. Different tools (ethnoarchaeology, technical recipes, archaeometric analyses, archaeological remains, economic sources, quantitative estimates, restoration reports) are used to track the indicators of a workshop producing coloured and gold-leaf mosaic plates, to identify the markers of mosaic glass history and technology from chemical analysis, and to detect the material results on the remains of the actions performed by the craftsmen. The second part investigates the specific issues of the case of Milan. In particular, it reconsiders the hypothesis of the existence of a Milanese workshop that manufactures and lays out glass tesserae, approached so far in a contradictory literature in term of chronology and cultural framework. The archaeological remains, literary sources, iconographic testimonies, and archaeometric analyses, despite their difficult interpretation, allow identifying three stages of diffusion of mosaic art in Milan: the late Imperial age, the age of the Goths, and the final centuries of the Early Middle Ages. Three significant cases are analyzed for each of these periods: the Basilica of San Lorenzo (late 4th-early 5th c.), the baptistery of San Giovanni alle Fonti (end 5th-6th c.) and the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio (5th-6th and 10th c.). This research contributes to the state of several open questions: the technology of glass, the preserved or innovative features with respect to Roman techniques, the mural decoration of Milanese buildings, the choices of the customers who have financed the buildings, the investment required, the social and commercial relations established in order to carry out the works.

La capitale du « miracle économique » italien : Milan et ses représentations entre littérature et cinéma (1955-1965) / The capital of the Italian « economic miracle » : Milan and its representations between literature and cinema (1955-1965)

Tassi, Graziano 09 December 2016 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to analyse how literature and cinema have represented the city of Milan during the decade 1955-1965, which slightly precedes and follows what the majority of historians now call the “economic miracle” (1958-1963). This research attempts to retrace the real and the imaginary portrait of a city, whose experience and dynamics at the time of the “economic miracle”, appeared as a representative sample of Italy as a whole. This topic has been considered from an interdisciplinary perspective through works of history, architecture, urbanism and sociology, focusing first on the real forms of the city. These forms are then subsequently confronted with their imaginary representations through literature and cinema. This choice was dictated by the conviction that the complexity of the city, as an object of study, integrates various levels of structuration: physical, economic, social, but also temporal and imaginary. This dissertation is composed of five parts beginning with the analysis of the urban form of the city and ending with the examination of its social composition. After this investigation, three distinct, yet seemingly contradictory, images appear, which could define the Lombard city as “the dynamic city”, “the city of the capital” and “the crystalized city”. These three contradictory images are expressed through a large variety of modes of representation, styles and tones, which form a broad mosaic of artistic expressions reflecting the complexity, relations, contrasts and conflicts that characterize the city of Milan at the time of the “economic miracle”.
