Accessing Mental Health Care in the Canadian Armed Forces: Soldiers’ Stories

Compton, Lisa Ann January 2016 (has links)
Background: Recent Canadian Armed Forces operations involved multiple deployments and exposure to traumatic events that are associated with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and substance abuse. Despite efforts to facilitate mental health care, some soldiers do not get the help they need. Objective: To understand soldiers’ experiences and explore barriers and facilitators they encountered accessing mental health care. Results: Qualitative descriptive interviews with 11 Canadian Armed Forces members revealed six major categories that provide insights into their experiences accessing mental health care. Participants’ revealed significant barriers to care including fear of damaging their career or being released, stigma beliefs and actions from peers and leaders, and physical and organizational barriers to care. Social support from family, military co-workers, and unit leaders facilitated care. Conclusions: Notwithstanding efforts to facilitate access to mental health care, some soldiers still perceive significant barriers to care.

Rambo, Andersson eller Erik? : En studie av militära identiteter och ideal

Valemark, Justin January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this paper was to assess how soldiers of the Swedish Armed Forces manage the conflict between their military and civilian identities. For the study six solders serving at a regiment in Sweden were interviewed. The results showed that the majority of the interviewees seemed to be keen to distance themselves from work and that they ”returned” to their civilian identity when being off-duty, only to switch back when being back in uniform. It seemed testing for the soldiers to distinguish the two and several of them seemed to “fall back” to their military identity, even when being off-duty outside the regiment. No greater conflict was thereby notable between the two identities since the soldiers seemed to rely on a single stable identity throughout their everyday.Several of the soldiers also showed an unwillingness to be compared to the stereotypical ideals that the public had of them and chose to dissociate from them and redefine the situation for those who had that perception. This to preserve their military identity and self image.

This is a study that aimed at the professional identity of students who enter the military nursing program in the School of Health from Marcilio Dias Naval Hospital (HNMD). It was concluded that the military ID is the most striking aspect in the lives of respondents, being seen as a nursing specialty within the military, nursing has been a priority of choice among the courses offered by the Navy due to the advantages of not embarking and be a less menial service. Factors such as stability and security emerge as strengths of military an there is no conflicts because they belong to a profession mostly female because the military environment is predominantly male, which leaves them confortable.

Um estudo dos gritos de guerra militares sob a ótica da Linguística Sistêmico-Funcional / A study of military war cries from the perspective of systemic-functional linguistics

Marcelo João Naves 25 March 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate todays military war cries, a discourse genre that originates in the social practices of the military environment and is the result of beliefs and perceptions that define the military identity. In this study, thirty war cries collected in 2009 along with groups of cadets from the Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras (AMAN) were analyzed. Based on the theoretical framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics, having Hallidays ideational meaning as a starting point (Halliday, 1985), the research aimed to show how the organization of the linguistic system occurs in accordance with the functional aspect of the war cries. By means of the category of transitivity, this study looked into how the representations of the world are manifested in the clausal structure. By showing a greater presence of material and relational processes in the materialization of the linguistic world experiences, the nature of social practices in the military context could be better characterized; also, the meaning constructed by such processes helped to establish an institutionalized identity. By mapping the modes of representation of social actors, based on the socio-semantic categories presented by Van Leeuwen (1997), this research found that the individuals are inscribed into the textual materiality mainly through collectivization, thus revealing a particular form of integration of the subjects in the military sphere. This, in turn, shows the group as an entity that relies on the cohesion created among its members, which is fundamental to the consolidation of the institution itself. The way the military are represented in the battle cries revealed na identity necessary to the group so that, through this genre, certain institutionally defined goals are achieved, which can be summarized in the idea of developing the military spirit

A Mixed Method Approach: The Influence of Military Identity on Person-Organization Fit and Organizational Commitment, and a Proposed System of Military to Civilian Employment Transition

Doyle, Alaina M. 05 1900 (has links)
The evaluation of the transition experiences of veterans to civilian life was conducted. The military to civilian transition (MCT) framework along with theories covering organizational, identity, and systems streams of research situated the study. A mixed methods approach was conducted in two phases: a 28-item survey and 1.5-hour interviews, which helped contextualize and explain survey findings. The multiple regression procedure examined the relationship among three variables: person-organization fit, military identity, and organizational commitment with military identity was included as a moderator. Results indicated a positive relationship between person-organization fit and organizational commitment. Contrariwise, results indicated military identity's relationship between the variables was found to be not statistically significant. Although the moderation effect of military identity was not found to influence the relationships, interviews with veterans indicated a strong connection to their military identity. Veterans shared negative and unpredictable transition stories, positive transition stories, feelings of isolation, and held prevailing military goals, while reporting a lack of backing from support agencies. Veterans perceived differences between the military and civilian environments, veteran turnover and organizational commitment were found to connect and military values and military identity were found to have connections as well. Recommendations for improving military to civilian setting transitions for veterans, civilians, and support agencies are presented. A new system of transition is proposed with the intention of improving the veteran experience as they enter the workforce. Future research and limitations to the research outcomes are also supplied.
