Cette thèse examine le phénomène du contrepoids issu du mime corporel, un art inventé par Etienne Decroux (1898-1991). À partir de son analyse aux niveaux physique, technique et poétique, cette étude met en lumière la possibilité de dépasser l’illusion de la représentation par la compréhension pratique du contrepoids poétique, non seulement pour le mime corporel, mais également pour toutes les activités liées au sport, à l’art de la scène, et à la résistance politique. Le contrepoids contribue à expliquer l’importance éthique et le succès international croissant de sports comme le breakdanse et le skate-boarding durant ces trente dernières années. Dans le domaine de la résistance politique, cette notion permet de mieux comprendre le succès de Muhamed Ali tout autant que l’émotion suscitée par l’homme debout, seul devant les chars sur la place Tian’anmen. Enfin, dans le domaine des arts du spectacle, cette thèse propose une pédagogie pratique du théâtre physique focalisée sur le contrepoids en tant que base du mouvement dramatique. Avec la tendance, aujourd’hui, de s’orienter vers un art interdisciplinaire et pluriculturel, qui ouvre les frontières entre les arts plastiques, le théâtre et la danse, cette pédagogie offre une méthode pour les acteurs mais aussi pour les danseurs qui cherchent à créer un art transversal capable de surmonter les barrières des langages, des langues et des cultures. / This thesis examines the phenomenon of counterweights of corporeal mime, an art invented by Etienne Decroux (1898-1991). And through the optic of three existential levels: the physical, the technical, and the poetic, this study presents the possibility of going beyond the illustrative representation and the illusion with the practical understanding of poetic counterweights not only for the art of corporeal mime, but across all corporeal activities related to sports, performing arts, and political resistance. Counterweights help explain the ethical importance and international rise of sports like breakdancing and skateboarding within the past thirty years. And in the political resistance arena, it helps to better understand the secrets to Mohammed Ali’s success, as well as the emotional affect of the “tank man, ” a lone man standing in front of a column of tanks at the Tiananmen Square. Finally, for the realm of performing arts training, this thesis proposes a practical pedagogy of physical theatre focused on counterweights for the basis of dramatic movement. With the current trends toward interdisciplinary and multi-cultural performance art that opens the boundaries between fine art, theatre, and dance, this pedagogy offers a training method for both actors and dancers who seek to create transversal art that reaches across the boundaries of language and local cultures.

Le théâtre dans la Grèce Antique a développé quatre genres dramatiques : la tragédie, la comédie, le drame satyrique et le mime. Le Mime est le genre comique qui naît en Grèce dorienne, se développe en Sicile et dont l’évolution se poursuit jusqu’à l’époque hellénistique. Bien qu’il constitue une part importante de l’art dramatique grec antique, il n’y a pas eu jusqu’à nos jours de recherche systématique sur ce type de théâtre. Cette étude a pour but d’explorer ce genre dramatique inconnu. Rechercher son origine, son évolution historique et ses rapports (similitudes et différences) avec les autres genres d’art dramatique, ainsi que ses principaux créateurs constituent les principaux objectifs de cette recherche / Theatre in Ancient Greece developed into four dramatic genres: tragedy, comedy, satyrical drama and mime. Mime is the comic genre which was born in Dorian Greece, developed in Sicily and which development continues until the Hellenistic period. Although it is an important part of the ancient Greece dramatic art, up to now there was no systematic research on this type of theatre. This study aims at exploring that unknown dramatic genre. Theatre as mimesis, the actor as mimic: can we still think in these terms, two and a half millennia after antiquity? The Meaning in Mimesis puts canonical texts of acting theory by Plato, Diderot, Stanislavsky, Brecht, and others back into conversation with their informing paradigms in philosophy and aesthetics, in order to trace the recurring impulse to theorize the actor's art and the theatrical experience in terms of one-to-one correspondences. I show that, across the history of ideas that is acting theory, the familiar conception of mimesis as imagistic representation entangles over and over again with an "other mimesis": mimesis as the embodied attunement with alterity, a human capacity that bridges the gap between self and other. When it comes to the philosophy of the theatre, it is virtually impossible to consider the one-to-one of representation or re-enactment without at the same time grappling with the one-to-one of identification or vicarious experience.

Towards the performer-creator in contemporary mime, with specific reference to the physical theatre of Andrew Buckland, 1988-2000

Part one of this thesis investigates the conceptualisation of the performer-creator and its relevance in late twentieth century physical performance by examining some of the theoretical, but mainly artistic, traditions that suggest a movement towards this. Chapter one tackles the question of definition, linking mime within a wider physical theatre phenomenon. Chapter two looks at the importance of mime training for contemporary performance. This requires a focus on selected theatre practitioners who have significantly advanced the development of mime training and performance during the twentieth century. Chapter three examines the issue of silence in mime and questions a potential liberation of the word and language in contemporary performance and consequently how this affects the role of the performer, particularly in South Africa. Chapter four investigates the figure of the theatrical clown and how this late twentieth century development is playing an increasingly important role in contemporary performance. Chapter five then wraps up part one by pulling the preceding chapters together and thereby providing a working conceptualisation of the performer-creator, locating it within an overall appreciation of contemporary mime. Part two then tests the notion of the performer-creator by focussing on a case study through the investigation of Andrew Buckland to develop this idea. Andrew Buckland, and his work under the ethos of Mouthpeace from 1988-2000, provides a clear and unique example of this movement in contemporary South African performance. Trained as an actor and in classical illusion-based mime technique, as well as many dance forms such as ballet, contemporary and jazz, he has virtually single-handedly created and shaped a particular performance trend that is in line with contemporary international trends but retains a distinctive South African flavour. There is no space to attempt a definitive or exhaustive examination of his works, and nor is the intent to do so; rather, the aim is to draw from his work their essences that reveal his development as an artist: as both a creator and a performer.

Key technologies facilitating these capabilities were the Hypertext Transfer (HTTP) protocol , the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol, and the Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (S/MIME) specification . This year we discuss utilizing the Secure Electronic Transaction (SET) specification in tandem with HTTP, SSL, and S/MIME to deploy a system for securely selling telemetry data over the Internet.
