Challenges in implementing continuous support during intrapartum care in public hospitals in the North West Province / Nobelungu Sylvia Spencer

Spencer, Nobelungu Sylvia January 2014 (has links)
Continuous support during intrapartum is undeniably beneficial. It increases the mother‟s chance of giving spontaneous vaginal birth, which is not physically traumatic. This indicates the effectiveness of continuous support during intrapartum. According to a Cochrane review conducted such support has no identified adverse effects (Hodnett et al., 2009:2). It is important that implementation of continuous intrapartum support should be promoted by the midwives in order to improve the quality of care given to labouring women. The objective of the study is to explore and describe the challenges in implementing continuous intrapartum support in public hospitals in the North West Province. The findings of this study will contribute to the formulation of recommendations to promote continuous intrapartum support in public hospitals in the North West Province. Focus group interviews were conducted to collect data from 33 (thirty-three) registered midwives who have worked in labour rooms for 2 years or more who are able to give in-depth and rich expressions of opinion. The focus group interviews were conducted in a natural setting in the labour unit to avoid inconvenience. An explorative, descriptive and contextual qualitative approach using a non-experimental research design was used in order to reach the aim of the study, being to promote continuous support during intrapartum in public hospitals in the North West Province. The study revealed that midwives have an understanding of the benefits of continuous intrapartum support, but its implementation is hindered by challenges. Recommendations are made to inform the different stakeholders involved in curbing the challenges in order for the implementation of continuous intrapartum support to be a success. These recommendations are directed at the nursing practice, nursing (midwifery) education, nursing research and policy. / MCur, North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

Van Aswegen, Berendien Susan 23 September 2014 (has links)
M.A. (Afrikaans) / In comparing these two novels the perceptual, psychological and ideological facets of focalization are discussed. Perceptual focalization comprises two main aspects namely the focalizer's spacial orientation as regards himself and the focalized object and secondly the focalizer's position regarding the past, present and future in the text. The psychological facet of focalization comprises the cognitive background and development of the narrator-focalizer as well as his emotional orientation towards the focalized. The life world and value system of the focalizer determines the ideological perspective against which the characters and events in the novel are evaluated...

Apollis, Teneal January 2020 (has links)

Oosthuizen, Lizebelle 28 April 2005 (has links)
The aim of the study was to investigate and describe how the mother in the home school fulfils her role as a teacher for her child in the foundation phase. The literature review confirmed that mothers choose to home school their children for various reasons, and use different approaches in home schooling. The home school teacher as well as the home school learner have certain responsibilities to fulfil, which bring about certain challenges that they have to face. An evaluation of home schooling showed various concerns regarding these learners’ performance and development, especially scholastically and socially. Unstructured interviews were conducted with selected mothers to explore their perceptions of their role as a teacher, the degree of differentiation between their mother and teacher roles, and the execution of their roles. An analysis of the home school learners’ schoolbooks was done, focusing on the input and feedback of the mother teacher. The researcher’s observations and reflections were included in the analysis. Findings: · The mothers do not differentiate between their mother and teacher role. · Their teaching was influenced by their own experiences, their views on teaching and learning and their views on the roles they fulfil in the home school. · Each home school situation is unique and the mothers’ perceptions of the roles they fulfil and the execution thereof differ greatly and are influenced by the context in which the home schooling takes place. / Dissertation (MEd (Educational Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Educational Psychology / unrestricted

Fouche, Marietjie 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Few people realize exactly how complicated the translation of children’s poetry is. Translators do not only have to adhere to the young readers’ desires and satisfy the adult critics, but are constantly confronted with choices concerning the translation of the ‘play-element’ (structure) and the ‘visual element’ (content) of children’s verses, i.e. the translation of cultural elements, figurative language, pun, nonce words, onomatopoeia, alliteration, rhyme and meter. In addition, their translation strategies are continually subjective to and restricted by the visual text (illustrations) in the source texts, which interrelate with the verbal text (verses). In this descriptive, systematic analysis the Afrikaans and French translations of Mother Goose’s nursery rhymes, Dr. Seuss’s rhyming picture books and Roald Dahl’s verse fragments are compared to one another and the source texts in order to identify the various translation strategies and theoretical translation approaches used by the various Afrikaans and French translators, to make concrete observations about the translation of children’s poetry that can be useful for translators, and to establish if it is indeed possible to create translations of children’s verses that remain true to the ‘spirit’ of the original poetic texts, can function as autonomous texts in the target system, and that can supplement the Afrikaans and French children’s literature systems.

Venter, Estelle 13 October 2004 (has links)
Bereavement of a miscarriage is complex because of factors that are unique to this loss. There is no visible child to mourn for, no memories or shared life experiences. The death is sudden and there usually a lack of recognition of the significance of such a loss by society. In addition, women who miscarry are often in need of the absent social and emotional support that is provided with other types of bereavement. The suppression of appropriate mourning due to society’s inhibitions may cause further stress and long-term emotional consequences. Prenatal loss is unique in the sense that the parents do not know the object of loss as it would be with the death of a loved one who has been part of their lives and social structure. The anticipated child is both a fantasy child and an internal entity within a woman’s body. The loss of a baby is also the loss of part of a women’s self. The researcher is of the opinion that a miscarriage is a traumatic experience which, if not thoroughly dealt with, can cause great damage to a sufferer’s life. According to her, projective techniques in the form of play therapy can encourage women to talk about their miscarriage in order to deal with suppressed emotions. The purpose of this research was to determine to what extent projective techniques could be used in respect of a mother’s emotional experience of a miscarriage. For this study the qualitative research approach was used. The participants were selected by making use of purposive sampling as a form of non-probability sampling. During the empiric research two respondents attended eight in-depth interviewes with a therapeutic component. The first interview comprised a semi-structured interview schedule. Six interviews followed where projective play therapeutic techniques were used. The empirical data was obtained from the interview schedule and the researcher was the primer instrument of gathering information. The value of meaning that the participants attached to the subject was of great importance. The empirical data showed that the two participants were better enabled to deal with their miscarriages after the interviews. Thus, regarding the experience of the two paricipants, it was possible to answer the research question positively. It seems as if projective techniques can indeed be used in respect of a mother’s emotional experience of a miscarriage. / Dissertation (MA (Play Therapy))--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Social Work / unrestricted
