A Comparative Assessment of How Rhesus Monkeys and 3- to 4-year-old Children Remember Self-Agency with Spatial, Temporal, and Contextual Features in Working Memory

Comparative research on event memory has typically focused on the binding of spatial and temporal information in memory, but much less is known about how animals remember information about the source of their memories (i.e., whether the event is something they performed themselves or whether they observed it). The purpose of the present study was to examine how rhesus monkeys (n = 8) and 3- to 4- year-old children (n = 20) remember this information along with other relevant event features (object identity, spatial location, temporal properties and contextual features) in working memory. In Experiment 1, rhesus monkeys completed five different delayed matching-to-sample tasks to assess independent encoding of these five event components. In Experiment 2, the monkeys either performed or observed an event and then had to respond to a randomly selected pair of memory tests used in the previous experiment. In Experiment 3, children were presented with the same memory task, but were given a brief demonstration to learn how to perform the task. Both children and monkeys responded to these tests using photos and shapes (for the identity and spatial tests) and icons (for the temporal, agency and context tests). The monkeys demonstrated significantly above-chance performance on the identity, spatial, temporal and agency tasks. The children were above chance on the one component the monkeys had difficulty with (context), but conversely demonstrated difficulty on the temporal memory test. There was evidence of feature integration in both monkeys and children. Specifically, the children were significantly more likely to respond correctly to the second memory test if they had also been correct on the first memory test. Two of five rhesus monkeys also showed this effect, indicating that for these individuals, the features were integrated in working memory. Implications of this research are discussed in relation to self-awareness and episodic memory research in children and nonhuman species.

CYP2D6 metabolizes a range of centrally acting drugs, neurotoxins, and endogenous neurochemicals. Higher levels of brain, but not liver, CYP2D6 have been identified in alcoholics and smokers, suggesting exposure to ethanol and/or nicotine may induce brain CYP2D6. We investigated the independent and combined effects of chronic ethanol self-administration and nicotine treatment on CYP2D expression. METHODS: Monkeys were randomized into 4 groups of 10/group consisting of a control group, ethanol-only group, nicotine-only group, and a combined ethanol and nicotine group; treatments occurred for 64 days. RESULTS: Exposure to chronic ethanol and nicotine induced CYP2D across various brain regions and cell types, particularly when both drugs were given in combination. No changes in protein levels were observed in liver or in CYP2D mRNA levels in liver and brain. CONCLUSIONS: Ethanol and nicotine increase brain CYP2D levels, which may affect CNS drug response, neurodegeneration and personality among those exposed to alcohol and/or nicotine.

Segregation within afferent pathways in primate vision

The current knowledge of the visual pathways in primates includes the patterns of projection from the retina through the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) to the striate cortex (V1) and the extra-striate projections towards the dorsal and ventral streams. Cells with short wavelength sensitive cone (S-cone) inputs in the dLGN have been studied extensively in New World marmosets but not in Old World macaques. This thesis presents results from studies in the macaque monkey which are more relevant to humans since humans are closer in evolution to Old World than New World monkeys. / The spatial, temporal, chromatic and orientation preferences of neurons in the dLGN of the macaque were investigated by electrophysiological methods. The physiological findings of cells with S-cone inputs were compared to cells with opponent inputs from the long and medium wavelength sensitive cones (L-cones & M-cones, respectively). The cells receiving S-cone inputs (blue-yellow or B-Y cells) preferred lower spatial frequencies than the cells with opponent L-cone and M-cone inputs (red-green or R-G cells). Orthodromic latencies from optic chiasm stimulation were measured where possible to distinguish differences in conduction velocity between the cell groups. Although the B-Y cells usually had longer latencies than R-G cells, there wasconsiderable overlap between the cell groups. / The recorded cells were localised through histological reconstruction of dLGN sections stained for Nissl substance. The distribution of B-Y cells within the dLGN was compared to the distribution of R-G cells. The majority of B-Y cells were located within the intercalated koniocellular layers as well as the koniocellular bridges (extensions of the koniocellular layers into the adjacent parvocellular layers). The B-Y cells were also largely segregated within the middle dLGN layers (K3, P3, K4 & P4). The R-G cells were mainly concentrated within the parvocellular layers (P3, P4, P5 & P6) and were evenly distributed throughout the middle and outer layers of the dLGN. / The study also included recordings from the extra-striate middle temporal area (MT) to determine whether a fast S-cone input exists from the dLGN to area MT which bypasses V1. The pattern of cone inputs to area MT neurons was investigated before and during inactivation of V1. The inactivation was done through reversible cooling with a Peltier thermocouple device or focal inactivation with y-amino butyric acid (GABA) iontophoresis. Precise inactivation of V1 to the topographically matching visual fields of the recording sites in area MT revealed a preservation of all three coneinputs in many cells. The subcortical sources of these preserved inputs are discussed with their relevance to blindsight, which is the limited retention of visual perception after V1 damage. Analysis of the latencies of area MT cells revealed a rough segregation into latencies faster or slower than 70 ms. Cells both with and without a significant change in response during V1 inactivation were present in each group. The findings reported in this thesis indicate that some of the preserved inputs in area MT during V1 inactivation may be carried by a direct input from the dLGN which bypasses V1.

Prior research has pointed out the importance of companies attending social media during company crises. Though limited studies have examined how crisis communication stands on social media platforms during real organisational crises. Done by a qualitative textual analysis conducted through official statements from H&M:s Facebook posts, Twitter posts and Instagram posts for this case, this study aims to explore how the crisis communication for H&M stood during their crisis “coolest monkey in the jungle” in January 2018 to see how H&M used effective crisis communication strategies. The textual analysis is used to study how the empirical material reveal recurrent strategies from Image repair theory together with the rhetorical concept of ethos pathos and logos. Based on prior research for crisis communication mainly made through case studies we use the same design which has been proven successful. Findings suggested how H&M regularly were using recurrent strategies from Image repair theory and the rhetorical concept in their crisis communication in this case. The outcome of this study shows an example for how crisis communication on social media can be and how effective crisis communication strategies can be used on social media.

Student-generated representations in Algodoo while solving a physics problem / Studentgenererade representationer i Algodoo vid lösningen av en fysikuppgift

Fysiklärare möter ofta den svåra uppgiften att representera abstrakta, väldefinierade egenskaper hos den fysiska världen (så som krafter eller energier) för studenter som går bortom ekvationer, grafer eller diagram. I denna studie tittar jag två fall av universitetsstudenter som löser en fysikalisk uppgift, användandes det digitala programmet Algodoo på en stor pekskärm för att undersöka hur studenter naturligt använder sig av sådan teknologi för att återskapa dessa representationer själva. Jag finner att när studenter skapar scener i Algodoo prioriterar de att behålla en viss mått av likhet från den fysiska världen, vilket går bortom den formella behandlingen av uppgifter som studenter kan ha fått lära sig i fysikundervisningen. Vidare, när studenterna använder sig av fysikaliska ekvationer vid lösandet av problemet, verkar de använda Algodoo som ett facit för att se huruvida deras numeriska lösning, uträknad på en klassisk whiteboard, stämmer. På detta sätt - vilket har föreslagits i tidigare forskning - ser jag hur Algodoo, och liknande digitala lärmiljöer, fungerar som en bro mellan studenternas konceptuella förståelse av den fysiska världen, och den mer formella, matematikbaserade beskrivningen vilket används inomfysiken. / Physics teachers are often faced with the difficult task of representing abstract, formally-defined properties of the physical world (such as forces or energy) for students in a way which goes beyond equations, graphs, and diagrams. In this study, I investigate two cases of university students solving a physics problem while using the digital software, Algodoo, on a large touch screen to examine how students might naturally leverage such technology to create such representations of their own. I find that as student draw scenes in Algodoo, they tend to prioritze a degree of resemblance to the physical world which goes beyond the formal treatment of problems they might have been taught in physics classes. Additionally, as the students recruit physics equation into their solution of the problem, they appear to use Algodoo as a conceptual check for the numerical answer they calculate on the normal whiteboard. In this way - and as has been hypothesized in previous research - I see the potential for Algodoo and similar digital learning environments to act as a bridge between students’ conceptual intuitions of the physical world and the more formal, mathematically-based descriptions used in physics.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This dissertation evaluated the age-sex structure, group size and population density of Alouatta guariba clamitans in 40 forest fragments. We also present a Population Viability Analysis for the subspecies. The study was conducted at Campo de Instrução de Santa Maria (CISM), an area of 5,876 ha belonging to the Ministry of Defense (Brazilian Army) and surrounding areas, located in the municipality of Santa Maria (Rio Grande do Sul State, South Brazil). The fieldwork was conducted from March 2012 to February 2013, totaling 58 days and sampling effort of 431 hours. Our data suggest high mortality in the brown howler monkey populations at CISM. The record of low densities, low occupancy rates in fragments and small group size supports our conclusions. Statistical analyzes showed significant differences between the current population parameters and the previously registered. The PVA results suggest the fragment size and adult female survival as the best parameters contributing for the population growth. Yellow fever is an important threat, especially if the incidence of new outbreaks is high. For the long-term persistence of A. g. clamitans at CISM, the minimum viable population must be at least 573 individuals living in a minimum suitable forest area of 516 ha, which is perfectly plausible for the CISM area. In Rio Grande do Sul state there are practically no conservation units, especially in the western range of the distribution of the brown howler monkey and reinforces the important role of CISM in this scenario, although not a conservation unit. Therefore, if the metapopulation dynamics is granted, it is able to ensure regional long-term survival of A. g. clamitans, unless it suffers more intensely other impacts (such as a new yellow fever outbreak) in a near future. / A presente dissertação avaliou a abundância e densidade das populações, o tamanho e a composição sexo-etária de grupos sociais de Alouatta guariba clamitans em 40 fragmentos florestais no município de Santa Maria. Além disso, apresenta uma análise de viabilidade populacional para a subespécie. Este estudo foi conduzido no Campo de Instrução de Santa Maria (CISM), uma área com 5.876 ha pertencente ao Ministério da Defesa (Exército Brasileiro) localizada no município de Santa Maria (Depressão Central do Rio Grande do Sul), e em áreas particulares do seu entorno. Foram realizadas no período de março de 2012 a fevereiro de 2013 doze campanhas de censo, totalizando 58 dias de campo com esforço amostral de 431 horas. Nossos dados sugerem que houve alta mortalidade nas populações de bugios do CISM após o último levantamento populacional, realizado em 2004. Essa conclusão é apoiada principalmente pela constatação de baixas densidades, reduzidas taxas de ocupação dos fragmentos e grupos com tamanho inferior ao encontrado anteriormente na mesma área. As análises estatísticas mostram que os parâmetros populacionais atuais diferem significativamente dos registrados anteriormente. Os resultados da AVP sugerem que o tamanho do fragmento, a sobrevivência e disponibilidade de fêmeas adultas são os parâmetros que melhor contribuem para as tendências de crescimento populacional. A febre amarela é uma ameaça importante, especialmente se a incidência de novos surtos for alta e a atual composição populacional, de acordo com o modelo, não foi capaz de se recuperar adequadamente em 100 anos. Para a persistência de A. g. clamitans no CISM a população mínima viável deve ser de pelo menos 573 indivíduos em uma área >516 ha de habitat adequado. O que é perfeitamente viável para o CISM, uma vez que o fragmento SAR possui uma área de 977,3 ha. Além disso, no Rio Grande do Sul atualmente praticamente inexistem unidades de conservação, especialmente na metade oeste da distribuição do bugio ruivo. Isso ressalta o papel importante do CISM, ainda que não se trate de uma Unidade de Conservação, logo, se assegurada, a dinâmica de metapopulação é capaz de garantir a sobrevivência regional A. g. clamitans em longo prazo, a menos que a mesma venha a sofrer mais intensamente outros impactos (ex: novo surto de febre amarela) em um futuro próximo.

Studies of the behavior and eating habits, exploitation and habitat the pattern of use of space are important, since there is a gap of information to species. Such information will assess how populations of S. flavius are living in forest fragments, enabling the deployment of more effective conservation actions. The study objectives were to describe the activity budgets, feeding behavior, the size of the home range and habitat exploitation pattern of a group of blonde capuchin monkey in RPPN Engenho Gargaú located in the municipality of Santa Rita (Paraíba). Data were collected by scan sampling method with instant records every 5 minutes. Phenological data were collected monthly from 90 vegetables fruiting specimens whose intensity were calculated using the Activity Index. The Scan Sampling was dominated by the travel (38.96%), followed by feed (28.58%), forage (21.66%), rest (4.77%), agonistic behavior, social, vocalization and drinking water (6%). This pattern varied significantly during the dry and rainy season. The food was more frequent in the dry season and the displacement in rainy season. The diet group was composed of fruit (43%), stalks of sugar cane (30%), prey animals (15%), leaves (7%), plant parts, including sheath, petiole, bark (3%) and flowers (2%). In the rainy season, fruit consumption was significantly higher and was positively correlated with the intensity of fruiting. The consumption of sugar cane was higher in the dry season, when fruit production was low. 48 plant species were identified in the diet, being Saccharam sp. (37.83%), Elaeis spp. (16.99%) and Tapirira guianenses (6.22%) the most important. The home-range calculated by the Minimum Convex Polygon (MPC) for the group was of 240.22 hectares. The habitats more explored were in Regeneration Forest (35.5%), Edge of Forest in Regeneration (28.2%), Edge of Flooded Mature Forest (17.5%), Edge of mature forest (9.6%) and mature forest (9.2%). The pattern of activities, diet and living area were consistent to those found for the genus Sapajus and all aspects were influenced by the seasonality of food resources and the intervening matrix composed predominantly of sugar cane. / O macaco-prego-galego, Sapajus flavius, ocorre em remanescentes de Mata Atlântica ao norte do rio São Francisco, sendo incluída na lista de espécies ameaçadas pela IUCN como “Criticamente em perigo”. Estudos referentes aos comportamentos e hábitos alimentares, à exploração de hábitats e ao padrão de uso do espaço são importantes, uma vez que há uma lacuna de informações para espécie. Tais informações permitirão avaliar como as populações de S. flavius estão vivendo nos fragmentos florestais, possibilitando a implantação de ações conservacionistas mais eficazes. Os objetivos do estudo foram descrever o padrão de atividades, o comportamento alimentar, o tamanho da área de vida e o padrão de exploração de hábitats de um grupo de macaco-pregogalego na RPPN Engenho Gargaú localizada no município de Santa Rita/PB. Os dados foram coletados pelo método de varredura instantânea com registros a cada 5 minutos. Foram coletados dados fenológicos mensais de 90 espécimes vegetais, cuja intensidade de frutificação foi calculada pelo método de Índice de Atividade. O padrão de atividades foi dominado pelo deslocamento (38,96%), seguido de alimentação (28,58%), forrageio (21,66%), descanso (4,77%), comportamentos agonísticos, sociais, de vocalização e de beber água (6%). Tal padrão variou significativamente nos períodos seco e chuvoso. A alimentação foi mais frequente no período seco e o deslocamento no período chuvoso. A dieta do grupo foi composta por frutos (43%), colmos de cana-de-açúcar (30%), presas animais (15%), folhas (7%), partes vegetais, incluindo bainha, pecíolo, cascas de árvores (3%) e flores (2%). No período chuvoso, o consumo de frutos foi significativamente maior e esteve positivamente correlacionado com a intensidade de frutificação. O consumo de colmos foi maior no período seco, quando a produção de frutos foi baixa. Foram identificadas 48 espécies vegetais incluídas na dieta, sendo Saccharam spp. (37,83%), Elaeis spp. (16.99%) e Tapirira guianenses (6,22%) as mais importantes. Área de vida calculada pelo método do Mínimo Polígono Convexo (MPC) para o grupo foi de 240.22 hectares. Os habitats mais explorados foram Floresta em Regeneração (35.5%), Borda de Floresta em Regeneração (28.2%), Borda de Floresta Madura Alagada (17.5%), Borda de Floresta Madura (9.6%) e Floresta Madura (9.2%). O padrão de atividades, dieta e área de vida foram compatíveis aos encontrados para o gênero Sapajus e todos os aspectos foram influenciados pela sazonalidade dos recursos alimentares e pela matriz interveniente formada predominantemente por cana-de-açúcar.
