Characterisation of Stachybotrys chartarum from water damaged buildings

Fungal contaminated buildings and related adverse human health implications have long been a topical issue throughout the world and concern is mounting with regards to the presence of more toxigenic fungi found in buildings and the associated health risks. These risks are compounded when homes are affected by water damage as a result of water intrusion problems, in particular flooding. With the ever changing climate and unpredictable weather conditions the frequency of flash flooding has increased in recent years and is set to increase and subsequently more homes will inevitably be effected by mould contamination. The present study initially aimed to determine the types of fungi commonly detected in buildings in the United Kingdom with varied levels of water intrusion problems via a small survey using various sampling techniques and particularly aimed to determine the conditions by which growth of the toxigenic fungi Stachybotrys chartarum could occur. Penicillium, Cladosporium and Aspergillus species were the most commonly detected fungi in buildings with relatively moderate levels of water intrusion problems; Stacybotrys chartarum was only detected in building with more severe water intrusion problems. Para a garantia do bom desempenho dos fluxantes para lingotamento contínuo de aços no molde, a determinação da sua composição química é importante para garantir as propriedades necessárias para o seu perfeito funcionamento. O carbono é adicionado ao fluxante para controlar a velocidade de fusão do fluxante sobre o aço líquido, já que, se adequada, colabora para a disponibilidade de escória líquida suficiente para alimentar o intervalo existente entre a placa de aço em solidificação e o molde, garantindo a perfeita lubrificação. Neste trabalho é demonstrada a influência do efeito de duas fontes de carbono na velocidade de fusão dos fluxantes, através da utilização de uma nova concepção de forno elétrico no qual são colocados dois cadinhos vazados contendo fluxante in natura. Um dos cadinhos é utilizado para avaliação da amostra de referência. O desenvolvimento das reações de fusão do fluxante com o aumento da temperatura resulta em uma escória que, em função de sua fluidez, gera o escorrimento da massa fundida a uma taxa característica, a qual é registrada em um gráfico de massa x temperatura. Desta forma, é demonstrada a eficiência do uso deste equipamento para avaliação da velocidade de fusão, e da influência da fonte e teor de carbono, possibilitando a avaliação de diferentes alternativas de composições. Os ensaios de microscopia com aquecimento e análises térmicas também foram utilizados. / In order to assure good performance of mould flux for continuous casting of steel, the chemical composition definition is important to guarantee the properties needs to its perfect behavior in the mould. Carbon is added to the mould flux to control the melting rate, since this property is related to the availability of liquid slag to fill in the gap between the solidified steel and the cupper wall that assure a perfect lubrication. This work presents the influence of two carbon sources evaluated by an apparatus designed for testing the melting rate of mould fluxes. It is an electric resistance furnace in which two perforated at the bottom crucibles contain flux sample in natura. One of the crucibles is used for the reference sample. As the temperature increases and the melting of the flux takes place, liquid slag starts dropping from the crucible, which is attached to a load cell. Weight losses and temperature are simultaneously recorded and a plot of mass (grams) versus temperature (degree Celsius) is produced. The effect of carbon content of the flux mixtures on the melting rate has been investigated. The heating microscope and thermal analysis were also evaluated.

A Computer Model of the Cellular Slime Mould Dictyostelium Discoideum

Excitable media are an important class of systems, examples of which include epidemics, predator-prey interactions, nervous systems, and heart muscle. Aggregating cellular slime moulds are an example of an excitable medium. The species of cellular slime mould Dictyostelium discoideum is an important model organism that many science laboratories use. Studying the aggregation of slime moulds increases knowledge about excitable media generally. One method of studying the aggregation of slime mould is to simulate theft behaviour on a computer model. This thesis presents the author's computer model of cellular slime mould Dictyostelium discoideum and the results of experiments carried out using the computer model. The experiments investigate the relation between the aggregation patterns and the various parameters of the model. These parameters are the density of artificial slime moulds, the acrasin threshold, the acrasin degradation rate, and the rate of acrasin secretion. Randomness has an effect on the aggregation patterns produced. Results of experiments are presented that examine the effect of randomness. Two forms of randomness are investigated: random secretion of acrasin by the artificial slime moulds; random initial reactivity of the artificial slime moulds. The computer model describes an artificial environment in which artificial slime mould amoebae interact with each other and their environment. Out of these individual interactions the global patterns that characterize slime mould aggregations emerge. The model facilitates the study of these individual interactions and hence the global patterns that emerge. The model and the experimental results described in this thesis contribute to the study of the aggregation phase of the life cycle of Dictyosteliuni discoideum. The author proposes mechanism that could underlie certain classes of aggregation patterns. These patterns include net-like aggregations and loop aggregations. The computer model presented in this thesis is successful in emulating the behaviour of the cellular slime mould Dictyostelium discoideum. In its present form the model is a useful tool to biologists. The results of experiments conducted with the model suggest mechanisms that may underlie certain pattern produced by living slime moulds. A result of particular interest is the initiation of the spiral wave pattern from a loop wave, which produces a loop aggregation.

Moisture Movement and Mould Management in Straw Bale Walls for a Cold Climate

There is a growing interest in straw bale construction for its low embodied energy and insulation value. Early studies of its structural behaviour and fire resistance have shown it to be a viable alternative to traditional building techniques. However, the biggest remaining obstacle to widespread acceptance is the moisture behaviour within the straw bale walls, especially as it concerns mould growth. The uncertainty of this behaviour leads to the hesitation of building officials and insurance providers to freely accept straw bale construction. Therefore, this study investigates the moisture, temperature and mould growth in straw bale walls, through a combination of analysis, dynamic modeling and field studies. A study of mould is presented along with the current methods available for predicting mould growth. Moisture is the primary controllable factor to mould growth in buildings. Therefore, an understanding of moisture accumulation within straw bale walls is necessary to provide a safe design that precludes mould growth. This study compiles the current state of knowledge of the hygrothermal properties of the materials used in straw bale walls. Then a parametric steady-state analysis is conducted to show the expected behaviour of vapour diffusion and the effects of the material properties. Two 14”thick x 6’ wide x 8’ high straw bale test walls were constructed: one was rendered with a typical cement-lime plaster and the other with a clay plaster. Temperature and moisture were monitored throughout the walls for over a year. These test walls provide more information on the macro behaviour of the walls to both vapour diffusion and, more importantly, rain. Hygrothermal computer modeling was conducted and compared to the test data to assess its accuracy. Thermal modeling was successful, while moisture modeling was found to be more difficult due to a lack of accurate rain data. With better climate data it is expected that accurate hygrothermal modeling of straw bale walls is possible. The result of this work is a general starting point for more detailed studies of the hygrothermal behaviour of straw bale walls with the ultimate goal of assessing the mould risk for various construction techniques and locations.

Skiktlimning i skolslöjden : ett gestaltande examensarbete om skiktlimning i slöjdundervisningen

Syftet med detta gestaltande arbete är att ta reda på hur skiktlimning fungerar i skolundervisningen och vilka möjligheter som finns för att integrera den mer i skolan. Syftet är också att bidra med kunskap om tekniken till andra lärare. Detta är ett gestaltande examensarbete. Tre olika produkter tillverkades med hjälp av skiktlimning. Processen dokumenterades så att lärare och elever ska kunna använda dem i slöjdundervisningen. Jag gjorde även fyra olika intervjuer med fyra lärare från tre olika skolor och även en undersökning om hur produkterna jag tillverkat fungerar i en skolsituation. Resultatet visar att skiktlimning är en teknik som kan vara av intresse för elever i skolan. Det är också uppenbart att lärare inte har mycket erfarenhet och kunskap om tekniken. Slöjdlärarna medger att det finns fördelar med tekniken även om den inte används ofta i undervisningen. Slutsatsen av denna studie är att skiktlimning som teknik kan användas i grundskolan men att den verkar förekomma i liten utsträckning. Min undersökning visar att det var mycket populärt bland eleverna när de väl blev introducerade och intresserade av tekniken. / The purpose of this study is to find out how laminate bending works in school and how one could integrate it even more. The purpose is also to spread awareness of this technique. This is an examinations work. I made three different items that involve the technique laminate bending. I documented them and made manuals for those so that teachers and students in school will be able to understand them. I also made four separate interviews with four different teachers from three different schools and also investigated how the products I made work in a school context. The results show that laminate bending is a technique that can be of interest to students today. It is obvious that teachers do not have much experience and knowledge about the technique. Teachers in sloyd admit the advantages of the technique even though it is not used frequently in learning processes in school. The conclusions from this study are that the technique can be used in school nowadays but it seems like it occurs in a very small extent. It is also apparent from my investigation that it is very popular among the students, once they got introduced and interested in the technique.

Boxing for biodiversity: a long-term follow up of an artificial dead wood environment

Today many saproxylic species are threatened because of habitat decline in Europe. Hollow trees represent a great part of the habitats that saproxylic species use. Since hollows takes a long time to develop, management actions are needed to prevent the extinction of saproxylic species. The aim of this study was to investigate the succession of saproxylic beetle species in artificial habitats in the form of wooden boxes. Wooden boxes were filled with a potential substrate and placed at different distances (0-1800 m) from oak hollow hot spots. In addition to the start mixture, four different additional substrates were added. In total, 4510 specimens of 114 saproxylic beetle species were sampled in 43 boxes over ten years. The specimens of tree-hollow species, wood rot species and nest species increased with 38% from the fourth to the final year but species richness decline from 47 to 29, respectively. A dead hen had a tendency for attracting more species but the small effect of different added substrates diminished over the years and had no significant effect on species richness after ten years. There was a higher similarity in species richness after ten years between the boxes and real hollow oaks. In conclusion, the artificial habitat developed into a more hollow like environment, with fewer but more abundant wood mould specialists, during ten years. This study clearly shows that the wooden boxes are used as habitats for saproxylic species as the boxes seems to develop into a more hollow-like habitat with time.

Order was given for the prodiction of 20 000 pieces of fixing washers. In this case was chosen injection moulding technology. Based on the research, a structural design of the mold was prepared together with the drawing documentation. From the range of materials, it was chosen polypropilene MOSTEN GB218, which is suitable for the given produstion. The simulation verified the reliability and quality of production. The parameters of injection moulding were determined by calculations, and the machine J180ADS – 180U was selected base of them. In the economic evaluation, the total costs for the production of the entire series were established on Nc=19626,43€.
