Physical Literacy and Intention to Play Interscholastic Sports in Sixth Grade Physical Education Students

Farren, Gene Lee 08 1900 (has links)
Prevalence of physical inactivity in children and adolescents and the associated epidemic of obesity are increasing concerns. U.S. national health statistics indicate early adolescence (i.e., 10-14 years) appears to be a period of importance regarding physical activity, sedentary behavior, health-related physical fitness, and obesity trends. Considering a significant portion of their waking hours are spent in school, it is widely held that schools' should play a significant role in increasing students' physical activity and health-related physical fitness. To do this, physical education in schools focus on providing quality physical education programs that produce physically literate individuals who have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of health-producing physical activity. In effect, a call for developing a comprehensive and valid measure of physical literacy has been aptly expressed. Thus, the purpose of this dissertation was to test the psychometric properties of proposed models of physical literacy, examine correlates of the physical literacy factor, and investigate the significance of the relationship between physical literacy and interscholastic sport intention via structural equation modeling. Participants were 400 (231 female, 169 male) sixth-grade physical education students who completed three brief surveys assessing maturation, self-efficacy, self-esteem, knowledge and understanding, motivation, physical activity and sport participation, and interscholastic sport intention. In addition, students completed a sedentary behavior log, a health-related physical fitness assessment, and an overhand throwing skill assessment. Analyses offered overall support for the proposed physical literacy measurement models. Results also supported positive relationship Physical literacy was statistically significantly positively related physical activity and sport team participation, and significantly negatively related and screen-time sedentary behavior. Results also supported a positive path between physical literacy and interscholastic sport intention. The implications of promoting physical literacy within physical education are discussed in light of the three higher-order underlying factors of physical literacy.

Ověření rytmických schopností u vysokoškolských studentů v oblasti vzdělávání tělesná výchova a sport / Verification of rhythmic abilities of university students in the field of education and physical education and sport

Kašparová, Alena January 2020 (has links)
The thesis is focused on creating a test battery for the sense of rhythm assessment for university students in the field of Physical Education and sport. Music-sports practice lacks such tests and so far it is forced to use only tests designed for the music field. The structure of the new tests corresponds to the characteristics of the sense of rhythm from the point of view of music psychology. The tests are divided into three sections, which are Perceptual Skills and Activities (items 1 to 18), Reproductive Skills and Activities (items 19 to 27) and Production Skills and Activities (item 28). The Classical test theory (factor analysis) and Item response theory (two-parametric model) were used for the statistical processing of results. The methods also included the calculation of the reliability and validity of the test. The expected refusal of the proposed hypothesis was confirmed in both the classical test theory and item response theory. The exception was model 4, whose fit indexes, especially TLI = 0.537, showed a lack of evidence for the refusal of the hypothesis rather than for a perfect fit of the model with the data. The aim of the research was to compile and test models whose conformity with the data would be the best. The most favorable conformity was for model No. 1 and No. 5. Model 1...

De Kock, Maria Magdalena 11 1900 (has links)
The aim of this investigation was to ascertain whether Educational Kinesiology could be applied by the Educational Psychologist as a psychotherapeutic tool in order to enhance emotional wellbeing. According to Edu-K the mind-body system is inseperably one: emotional blocks are not only situated in the mind and intellect of a person, but are recorded on cellular level as well. Research was done by way of an idiographic approach. Five subjects with emotional problems received a series of balances according to their individual needs. The aim was to ascertain whether Edu-K balances could enhance emotional wellbeing. A significant positive improvement in emotional problems as well as in academic performance were noted. General guidelines for parents, teachers and Educational psychologists are also given. / Psychology of Education / M. Ed. (Voorligting)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Lenita Ponce Mendes de Almeida.pdf: 1527151 bytes, checksum: db138be357c7cc95064dd0e1d8e43932 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-03-20 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / Fundação São Paulo - FUNDASP / This research is part of the line of research New Technologies in Education of the Graduate Program in Education: Curriculum of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo. It aims to reflect on the creation of new ways in school for the integration of the body to the school curriculum in digital culture. This work focuses on the development and appropriation of the body as an important component of the education of the individual in the contemporaneity. Starting from Michel Foucault’s theory of the docile bodies and the bodymedia theory of Christine Greiner and Helena Katz, this thesis registers and narrates the search for an integration of the body with knowledge in Circus Arts classes at a private school in the city of São Paulo. The research transits and is based on the digital culture as context, as well as it articulates the use of technologies as a cultural characteristic of the student. The impact of body discoveries is recorded in the construction of social notions such as responsibility, autonomy, individual and collective limits. Simple and widely used body solutions in teaching the arts of the scene, such as turning upside down or perceiving the center of balance, the observation of one’s own corporal possibilities and the ones of the colleagues act as facilitators to work with themes such as violence, gender, socio-cultural awareness and creativity. The main results of the research were the discovery of possible ways to construct forms for the integration of the body with the school curriculum found during the observation of the Circus Arts classes, the identification of a fragmented look at the body in the national documents and the lack of awareness of the potency that such integration can have for a quality critical education / Esta pesquisa insere-se na linha de pesquisa Novas Tecnologias na Educação, do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação: currículo da Pontifícia Universidade de São Paulo.
