The specification and design of a prototype 2-D MPEG-4 authoring tool

Viljoen, Deon Walter January 2003 (has links)
The purpose of this project was the specification, design and implementation of a prototype 2-D MPEG-4 authoring tool. A literature study was conducted of the MPEG-4 standard and multimedia authoring tools to determine the specification and design of a prototype 2- D MPEG-4 authoring tool. The specification and design was used as a basis for the implementation of a prototype 2-D MPEG-4 authoring tool that complies with the Complete 2-D Scene Graph Profile. The need for research into MPEG-4 authoring tools arose from the reported lack of knowledge of the MPEG-4 standard and the limited implementations of MPEG-4 authoring tools available to content authors. In order for MPEG-4 to reach its full potential, it will require authoring tools and content players that satisfy the needs of its users. The theoretical component of this dissertation included a literature study of the MPEG-4 standard and an investigation of relevant multimedia authoring systems. MPEG-4 was introduced as a standard that allows for the creation and streaming of interactive multimedia content at variable bit rates over high and low bandwidth connections. The requirements for the prototype 2-D MPEG-4 authoring system were documented and a prototype system satisfying the requirements was designed, implemented and evaluated. The evaluation of the prototype system showed that the system successfully satisfied all its requirements and that it provides the user with an easy to use and intuitive authoring tool. MPEG-4 has the potential to satisfy the increasing demand for innovative multimedia content on low bandwidth networks, including the Internet and mobile networks, as well as the need expressed by users to interact with multimedia content. This dissertation makes an important contribution to the understanding of the MPEG-4 standard, its functionality and the design of a 2-D MPEG-4 Authoring tool. Keywords: MPEG-4; MPEG-4 authoring; Binary Format for Scenes.

Hiding Depth Map in JPEG Image and MPEG-2 Video

Wang, Wenyi January 2011 (has links)
Digital watermarking of multimedia content has been proposed as a method for different applications such as copyright protection, content authentication, transaction tracking and data hiding. In this thesis, we propose a lossless watermarking approach based on Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) for a new application of watermarking. A depth map obtained from a stereoscopic image pair is embedded into one of the two images using a reversible watermarking algorithm. Different from existing approaches which hide depth map in spatial domain, the depth information is hidden in the quantized DCT domain of the stereo image in our method. This modification makes the watermarking algorithm compatible with JPEG and MPEG-2 compression. After the investigation of the quantized DCT coefficients distribution of the compressed image and video, The bit-shift operation is utilized to embed the depth map into its associated 2D image reversibly for the purpose of achieving high compression efficiency of the watermarked image and/or video and high visual quality of stereo image and/or video after the depth map is extracted. We implement the proposed method to analyze its performance. The experimental results show that a very high payload of watermark (e.g. depth map) can be embedded into the JPEG compressed image and MPEG-2 video. The compression efficiency is only slightly reduced after the watermark embedding and the quality of the original image or video can be restored completely at the decoder side.

A Dynamic Adaptive HTTP Streaming Video Service for Google Android

Rubio Romero, Luciano January 2011 (has links)
Adaptive streaming approaches over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), such as Apple's HTTP Live streaming (HLS) and Microsoft's Live Smooth Streaming, have recently become very popular. This master's thesis project developed and evaluated several media rate adaptation algorithms optimized for mobile networks with a client running on Google's Android operating system. The deployed service supports HLS and the emerging ISO/IEC MPEG standard called Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (MPEG-DASH). Live media was the focus of the evaluation, since this content can not be cached in advance at the user's device, hence the quality of the user's experience will be affected by the currently available bandwidth which the user can utilize. Experiments were performed for multiples scenarios illustrating different network capabilities, especially various amounts of bandwidth available to the user. This project has produced an implementation of HTTP-based adaptive streaming. This implementation follows the MPEG standard and enables robust and smooth playback of live video content via Google's Android devices. Results of the experiments have shown that the proposed adaptation mechanisms efficiently utilize the available bandwidth of the network. A clear conclusion of this thesis is that adaptive streaming will in fact enable substantial numbers of users to enjoy live media streaming to their devices / Adaptiv strömnings metoder över Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), till exempel Apples HTTP Live streaming (HLS) och Microsoft Live Smooth Streaming, har nyligen blivit mycket populära.

Facial Geometry Parameterisation based on Partial Differential Equations

Sheng, Y., Gonzalez Castro, Gabriela, Ugail, Hassan, Willis, P. January 2011 (has links)
No / Geometric modelling using Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) has been gradually recognised due to its smooth instinct, as well as the ability to generate a variety of geometric shapes by intuitively manipulating a relatively small set of PDE boundary curves. In this paper we explore and demonstrate the feasibility of the PDE method in facial geometry parameterisation. The geometry of a generic face is approximated by evaluating spectral solutions to a group of fourth order elliptic PDEs. Our PDE-based parameterisation scheme can produce and animate a high-resolution 3D face with a relatively small number of parameters. By taking advantage of parametric representation, the PDE method can use one fixed animation scheme to manipulate the facial geometry in varying Levels of Detail (LODs), without any further process.
