An Assessment of Market Growth Strategies in a multinational company : The case of Komatsu Forest AB

Setting strategies for an organisation is full of complexities (which strategy or strategic process to use) and these complexities arise from the ambiguous and non-routine processes. This is so because, strategy development is about the future and this future is unknown, as the paths companies follow are dynamic. Due to these complexities, managers tend to embark on knowledge gain through competencies in the management of companies. In order for future managers who have not had organisational experience to understand how strategic management is in real company situation, a case study on the types of market growth strategies and strategy development process in a multinational company is done in this thesis. How these strategies implemented affects market share is also an elaborate part of this study This study was done as a case study in Komatsu Forest AB; a multinational company that manufactures forestry machines. In this light, the study sets to identify the market growth strategies implemented by this company, its strategy development process and how the strategies have affected its market share. As basis for an empirical research process, a theoretical framework was compiled from existing literatures on market growth strategies and strategy development process, where the strategies were considered both at the business level and corporate level. A deduction research approach was appropriate for the study whereby qualitative empirical data was collected through semi-structured face-to-face interviews. The interviews were conducted with two employees of the company (Market analyst and the spokesman for the company) who were considered to be knowledgeable in the subject area. This allowed a thorough understanding of particular issues pertaining to the company. The analysis of the empirical findings showed that this company implements acquisition, partnership/networks and diversification at the corporate level and high pricing, differentiation at the business level as its market growth strategies. This company develops these strategies through a planned process; meaning that strategies are intended and these strategies have a positive impact on the company as its overall market situation has increased. This study offer some contributions for this company on how some strategic adjustments can be made in order to improve the current market situation and some recommendations for its management in better decision making.

Planning Integrated Advertising Campaigns : Multinational enterprises acting on national markets

This research paper reviews the topic of Planning Integrated Advertising Campaigns – Multinational enterprises acting on national markets. It examines the relevant theoretical background, the country of Sweden and a concrete business case of the multinational enterprise Dr. Oetker and its activities on the Swedish market. After an introduction, the first section of this work outlines the theoretical framework which is a necessary base for the research topic. Resultant, two models are developed: one regarding campaign phases and another concerning influences on national environments. These frame the theoretical findings in a concentrated form. In the following section, the empirical findings regarding the country of Sweden and the investigated company Dr. Oetker are depicted. The focus lies on Dr. Oetker’s company structure and the consequential influence on the manner of advertising and on the operations on the Swedish market. The analysis reveals information which can be split into two parts. Initially the empirical findings are evaluated based on the theoretical framework. Subsequently, a phase model which combines the two previous models with the empirical findings is developed. Its objective is to guide multinational enterprises through the planning process for successful national advertising campaigns. After this thorough analysis, a conclusion and recommendations for further theoretical and practical studies are given.

Study on Multinational Corporations's Organizational Adjustment After Merger & Acquisition-Taking W as an Example

Since it is a normal path for business to go for internationalization through merge and acquisition, there are always cases that end up with non expectable results. Therefore, there do exist huge risks in doing merge and acquisition. However, the probability of making a successful merge and acquisition could be improved by applying for appropriate strategic concerns. Finally, it is essential for managerial implications to find out the key factors of successful merge and acquisition. The thesis tried to find out factors that affect the process, and the outcome of merge and acquisition. By interviewing these key persons of W Company, we concluded with problems including culture, leadership, organization process, and human resources management that do have significant influence on the merge and acquisition progress. Furthermore, we try conclude and making hypotheses according to our interview. The purpose of our thesis was to discuss factors that affect the performance of merge and acquisition, such as corporate culture, leadership, operation process, and organization. According to the conclusions made from Narrative Method, it showed that these factors to some extent did have significant influence on the performance of post merge and acquisition. Therefore, anyone who wants to have splendid performance of merge and acquisition could not ignore these ones. According to the results, as we defined that whenever the performance ¡§turns from loss to profit,¡¨ it means that the merger is getting into success. Therefore, as the case is making huge profit many years after the action of merger, this is really a ¡§success¡¨ case. Therefore, the propositions and survey records are really precious and referral literatures for practical and academic.

Foreign direct investment in competing host countries : a study of taxation and nationalization

Capital-importing countries face a trade-off between the need to attract new investment and the desire to extract gains from investment already obtained. This dissertation analyses the developing countries’ taxation and nationalization of direct investment from the late 1960s and onwards. In contrast to previous work, it is considered that the developing countries compete with each other in their interaction with multinational enterprises. Using sequential bargaining games, two theoretical chapters determine the distribution of gains from direct investment through taxation and nationalization. One chapter adds external effects on the environment, casting light on when and why host countries may accept pollution as a price for obtaining direct investment. Finally, model based tests explain which countries nationalized in the 1970s, and why the nationalization policy was largely discounted in the late 1970s. The study suggests that host country policies which manipulate the behavour of multinational enterprises do not normally prevent direct investment from being undertaken, or distort the pattern of investment. Policies which interfere with ownership, on the other hand, may prevent and distort direct investment. Two states may be distinguished. The first, in which many countries nationalize, applies to the early 1970s. The second, in which few countries nationalize, has prevailed from the late 1970s. The findings of the study yield certain policy implications. The risk of a wide spread return to nationalization subsequent to an investment revival may not be curbed by the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), established as a member of the World Bank Group in 1988. A global workplace : an economic relationship and cultural harmonization during the globalization (a case study of Swedish companies in Thailand)

The globalization is the period of economic transformation according to the business competition. A number of multinational companies from industrial countries have to move their productions to a new emerging country which has a lower-labor cost, a strategic location, as well as an access to production material. Sweden is one of those countries that decide to re-locate their business center in other countries. The capital of Swedish companies has been distributed especially in Asian countries. Thailand is one of destinations that Swedish companies prefer to put the capital because of its labor cost, human quality, and strategic location. The objective of this thesis is to present the consequence of multinational companies from Sweden in Thailand as the main purpose. The economic relationship and cultural harmonization between these two countries will be discussed. This study is a qualitative research which requires qualitative methods to analyze data. Qualitative interviewing, case study and second data analysis has been the main approaches for data collection. The result of the study brings the conclusion that the capital movement from Sweden to Thailand during the globalization brings the positive development to both sides. Sweden gains more business revenue both in Thailand and Asian region, while Thailand gains wealth and sustainable development from the Swedish investment.

The nature and dynamics of contemporary nationalism: reshaping a modern and multinational BiH state

This thesis examines the unstable nature and dynamic impact of contemporary nationalism on the arduous process of reconstituting a modern multinational state. The basic research question concerns the relationship between nationalism and multinational democracy, or more specifically how nationalist forces may facilitate or impede the intricate process of political transition, democratic transformation and stabilization of the newly formed Bosnia and Herzegovina as a state. The findings indicate that nationalism and exclusive ethno-nationalist politics create serious inter-group security challenges and significantly hinder the process democratization, state-building and political transformation. The main obstacle to a coherent political system is based on the fact that nationalism causes an unconstrained reconfiguration of political space. This is apparent in BiH where exclusive nationalist politics continue to dominate the domestic and inter-national political agenda, thus limiting the capacity for political reforms, security and stability. As nationalism is a grave security threat to multinational states, there is a pressing need to manage nationalism with confidence building mechanisms that strengthen the state’s capacity to ensure enduring security and stability. / May 2006

Emerging economies are the home of a new type of innovation that can help multinationals (both Western and local) to achieve further growth. Reverse innovation is a new approach that entails developing frugal products in emerging markets that are later introduced in advanced economies. Aim: To develop a framework of reverse innovation, and to use this framework to find critical issues necessary for the Tata Nano to enter developed economies. Hence, we develop our own definition and a model of reverse innovation that will be used in the analysis of the Nano, with a specific focus on: the search for reverse innovation features present in the case and the problems/obstacles in the reverse innovation process. Methodology: Qualitative approach using a single-case study based on predominantly secondary data. The case study of the Tata Nano was chosen due to its compatibility with our research aims. Completion and results: The case of the Tata Nano fulfills all but one of the requirements for a reverse innovation: the last step of the process or the transition of the innovation to a developed market. Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the challenges faced by Pakistan Textiles industry as an emerging market from MNCs of Bangladesh, China and India and to find out the appropriate strategies which should adopted by the managers of this industry to counter these challenges. Method: In this research qualitative data is used that is gathered through unstructured interview and questioners have been used to have desirable results. Results & Conclusion: It is reflected from results that internal problems of Pakistan textiles industry such as energy crisis, high input cost, political instability, low return on investment are the main problems of this industry. To counter these challenges, their strategic approach should be Collaboration in product development and strategic alliance with attacking firms. Suggestion for Future Research: This research is focused on the Problems and challenges faced by Pakistan Textiles Industry. For the future studies research could be done to find out the strategies for the firms from Pakistan Textiles industry to do the business in international market and how these companies can compete in International Market with presence of other MNCs of the world. Contribution of the Thesis: This study provides action plans for the managers of Pakistan textiles industry to design and implement the strategies that build core competencies such as high quality products for their firms. Human Resource Management : motivation among emplyees in multinational corporations

Problem: Motivation is the number one problem facing businesses today. It is essential for employers to recognize what motivates employees in order to improve productivity and ensure the success of the company (Wiley, 1997). Even though employee motivation is a well researched topic, most studies have particularly focused on small domestic companies. Opportunities within MNCs and small companies are significantly different. Qualitative methods in the field of management is very limited, which the article by Cassell, Symon, Buehring and Johnson (2006) supports.  Purpose: The purpose of this dissertation is to explore what motivates employees to work. Focus will be on employees working in multinational corporations in Sweden. In order to do so, we aim to identify key factors which have an impact on motivation at work. This study will contribute with a framework of motivational factors in a organization. It will also give an insight in employees’ attitudes towards motivation and what motivation means to them.  Methodology: This thesis will use a qualitative method. The study is based on an interpretivistic philosophy with an abductive research approach. In order to answer our research question, primary data is collected through interviews with a number of employees from multinational companies in Sweden. This research strategy enables us to make investigations about work motivation. Conclusions: After analyzing the motivational factors in our study, we can make the conclusion that motivation is highly personal and differs from individual to individual. Work motivation is also not consistent over time, meaning, the factor which motivates an individual today will most likely not be the same motivational factor a year from now. It is clear that personal circumstances will have an impact on employee motivation. Results reveal that employees who are in the same profession are similarly motivated and satisfied in their work.
