A SURVEY OF CURRENT MUSIC THERAPY PRACTICES ADDRESSING MOTOR GOALS IN CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERProffitt, Matthew 01 January 2015 (has links)
Motor deficits in children who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have started to become recognized as an area of concern. The purpose of this study was to examine practices of board-certified music therapists who address motor goals of children with ASD. A total of 168 current board certified music therapists completed an 18-item online survey regarding music therapy practices with children who have ASD, particularly the frequency with which they address motor goals and specific goals and interventions. Respondents reported addressing motor goals with children who have ASD more frequently than suggested by previous research. Motor goals most commonly addressed include imitation, upper limb coordination, hand/eye coordination, compliance, and praxis skills. The most common interventions used to address motor goals were instrument play, movement activities, dancing, using manipulatives, and task-oriented music games. Using information provided from the study, music therapists will be better equipped in helping children with ASD who have motor deficits by providing a list of commonly used interventions and which specific motor goals they are used most commonly with.

Music Therapists’ Self-Compassion, Compassion for Others, and Professional Quality of LifeRushing, Jamie E. 01 January 2017 (has links)
As helping professionals, music therapists show compassion to their clients but may lack necessary self-care skills to prevent burnout and promote well-being. Due to a lack of research in this area, this study investigated reported levels of compassion for others, self-compassion, burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion satisfaction among music therapists in relation to age, gender, and years of professional experience. A survey of 575 board certified music therapists in the USA revealed higher levels of compassion for others than self-compassion, low levels of burnout and secondary traumatic stress, and high levels of compassion satisfaction. Burnout strongly negatively correlated with both self-compassion and compassion satisfaction and strongly positively correlated with secondary traumatic stress. A MANCOVA revealed significant differences in compassion for others and compassion satisfaction based on gender, with female participants reporting significantly higher scores for both constructs. Additionally, there was a trend related to self-compassion and compassion levels increasing over time. There were strong associations between compassion and self-compassion with burnout and secondary traumatic stress; therefore, it would benefit music therapists to cultivate compassion practices to lower burnout risk.

Music Therapy Program for Geriatric Patients Diagnosed with Serious Mental Illness: A Dalcroze and Wellness ApproachJanuary 2019 (has links)
abstract: Older adults diagnosed with a serious mental illness (SMI) often face a lifetime of psychiatric institutionalization, making them a very vulnerable population. However, music therapy research has not been conducted with this specific population. The purpose of this thesis was to develop an evidence-based proposed music therapy program for geriatric patients diagnosed with SMI utilizing both music-based and non-music based theoretical frameworks. The music-based approach used for the program is Dalcroze and the non-music based approach is Wellness with a focus on quality of life. The population diagnosed with SMI and the complications of aging for this population are discussed as well as the results of previous music therapy studies conducted with adults diagnosed with SMI. The components of the Dalcroze and Wellness approaches are described and the elements that are incorporated into the program include improvisation and eurhythmics and client strengths and the physical domain (movement). The proposed music therapy program will have the therapeutic goals of increased social interaction, increased self-esteem, and increased quality of life. The data collection tools are mentioned and how to measure results. The program is described in detail with session plans consisting of warm-up, improvisation, movement, and closing interventions. THE EFFECT OF GROUP MUSIC THERAPY ON PATIENT SATISFACTION IN A BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SETTINGLaPrade, Madelyn L. 01 January 2018 (has links)
Patient satisfaction has become increasingly important to medical facilities as a result of reimbursement rates being tied to patient satisfaction scores. Music therapy’s potential to enhance patient satisfaction scores has been explored and several studies exist examining its impact in the medical setting. No studies exist, however, examining how music therapy contributes to patient satisfaction scores in the behavioral health setting. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare overall patient satisfaction scores of inpatient psychiatric patients who received group music therapy services with those at the same facility who did not receive group music therapy services.
Participants who attended music therapy group (n=14) received an anonymous, voluntary survey with 10 questions based on the facility’s satisfaction survey and the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. Participants who did not attend music therapy group (n=15) received the same survey.
Results showed that patients who attended music therapy group reported overall satisfaction scores that were on average 3.02 points higher than participants who did not attend music therapy group. Age correlation and gender differences which may affect patient satisfaction scores are described. The implications for future research and current clinical practice are also discussed.

MUSIC THERAPY AND MULTICULTURAL COMPETENCE: A SURVEY OF MUSIC THERAPISTS' TRAINING AND PERCEPTIONSCahoon, Laura Kay 01 January 2018 (has links)
The changing demographics of the United States directly impacts the populations that music therapists serve. The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) provides a list of competencies regarding race, culture, and diversity, but how these are addressed in the classroom is not standardized. The purpose of this study was to examine music therapists’ perceptions of their training in multicultural competence. The researcher emailed 7,539 board-certified music therapists, 631 of whom completed the survey. Results indicated that 55.6% of music therapists think that multicultural competence is important, and the majority said that they felt prepared to demonstrate multicultural competence after completion of an undergraduate/equivalency music therapy program. Chi square analyses showed no significant associations between ratings of importance and gender or race/ethnicity. Results also indicated that classroom instruction was the most common way the competencies were addressed in undergraduate/equivalency programs. Qualitative analysis of how participants thought they could be better prepared revealed four themes: music skills, curricular integration, experience, and classroom activities.

A STUDY OF UNEMPLOYMENT AND UNDEREMPLOYMENT IN CLINICAL MUSIC THERAPYKelley, Christopher A. 01 January 2019 (has links)
Music therapy has been an established health profession for over 60 years serving a diverse population in different settings. Researchers studied the effects of burnout, career longevity, job satisfaction, and workforce analysis of clinical music therapy; however, no studies exist on the prevalence of unemployment and underemployment in clinical music therapy. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of unemployment and underemployment in clinical music therapy.
Participants who completed an anonymous online survey (n = 1,240) were board-certified music therapists who provided information on their current employment status. Results showed that the prevalence of unemployment among the participants was 5.78%, and prevalence of underemployment was 15.6%. Music therapists with more than 15 years of experience were more likely to work full-time than music therapists with 15 or fewer years of experience. Music therapists over 40 were no more likely to work full-time than music therapists who were 39 or younger. Implications for music therapy practice are discussed.

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MUSIC THERAPY INTERVENTIONS WITH PERSONS OF CONCERN: AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEWLauzon, Grace 01 January 2019 (has links)
Immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons, and stateless persons, collectively known as “persons of concern,” often have unmet mental health and wellness needs as a result of trauma. With a diverse variety of interventions and approaches, the use of music therapy has the potential to meet the needs of persons of concern. In the present study, the researcher conducted an integrative review to examine the use of music therapy with persons of concern. After conducting a hand-search of music therapy journals and an advanced keyword search through internet databases, the researcher found 17 studies that met inclusion criteria. There were ten studies in which participants were immigrants, six studies in which participants were refugees or asylum seekers, and one study in which participants were displaced persons. Refugees’ countries of origin were: Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Chile, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Iran, Liberia, North Korea, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Sudan, and Vietnam. Immigrants’ countries of origin were: China, Haiti, India, Korea, Latin America, Malaysia, Mexico, Romania, Russia, and Vietnam. Interventions used in the studies were (in order of frequency) singing, songwriting, instrument play, improvisation, lyric analysis, music listening, music imagery, and music-based relaxation. The needs of persons of concern, music therapy interventions, the rigor and quality of music therapy research, and implications for future clinical practice are discussed.

Sound levels in the neonatal intensive care unit often exceed the recommended level of 45 dBA. Various sounds contribute to the extraneous noise that envelops this fragile environment. Increase in noise and high levels of sound can be detrimental to the health of premature infants, which can cause both short and long-term developmental delays and negative physiologic responses. Music therapy interventions in the NICU have addressed numerous needs of this population, with a positive effect on development, physiologic responses, and hospital stay. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of music therapy on decreasing the sound levels in the NICU.
Two different pods in a 66-bed NICU were used to measure sound levels for four consecutive days, alternating between days of baseline and music therapy intervention. A dosimeter was used to collect data, which was later analyzed to determine Lmin, and Lmax, and Leq. Results indicated an overall decrease in the sound levels average when music therapy intervention was present. Future studies should use multiple settings and collect data for an extended amount of time to further examine the sound levels of the NICU environment and any additional effects music therapy can have.

Use of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-5 Among Current Music Therapy StudentsSimons, Jasmine 01 January 2014 (has links)
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) provides updates of diagnostic criteria and it is crucial that clinicians from all relevant fields are aware of new terminology. Music therapists are increasingly being added to interdisciplinary teams and need to efficiently communicate with other professionals. This study aimed to discover if current music therapy students are familiar with the DSM-5 before they enter their professional practice. Music therapy students from two American Music Therapy Association-approved universities completed a survey aimed to assess their use and knowledge of the DSM-5. A total of 58 participants were included in the analysis. Findings from the survey revealed that seniors had a higher level of knowledge of the DSM-5 and referred to it in their courses more so than freshmen and sophomores. However, a high rate of students indicated that they did not discuss the DSM enough in their music therapy courses, non-music therapy courses, and clinical experiences. If more universities were sampled in future studies, educational programs could closely examine the preparedness of music therapy students with regards to DSM training and then make curriculum modifications as needed.
