To perceive and perform : An observational study in how to copy music by ear

Persson, Annie January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to discover strategies and methods to copy music by ear. It’s been investigated by studying my own learning process when I try to copy a song by ear, a song that I never have heard before. Through this process I have chosen to record myself on film and write logbook to be able to document what is happening and what I am experiencing. When I observed the films I tried to se it from a design theory point of view. I have then been able to discover various resources in ”perceive and perform”. These are introduced in the result as resources for listening and strategies for listening. The resources that were used are presented as media, environment and time, the physical body and past experience. The strategies that were used are presented as how to plan listening, memorize, detail listening and whole listening. At that point I have investigated how to perceive musical parameters and structures. In the discussion part I am comparing my own results with previous research and literature about the musical ear and its rehearsing methods. For example I discuss different ways in listening and perceive music and practice what is heard, together with developing a so-called memory bank.

A Musical Personality : A quest towards discovering my identity in music and developing it into a musical personality

Thorolfsdottir, Marína Ósk January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of my research was to develop and strengthen my personality in music as a vocalist, so I would be able to freely let it out during any musical encounter. My base for the research was a duet with guitarist Mikael Máni Ásmundsson, but it was during a rehearsal with him that I realised for the first time I even had a musical personality – that I liked. Before, I had often felt uncomfortable and tense when playing music and not sure who I was as an artist. I limited myself to working with West Coast jazz, jazz standards, and lyrical improvisation, and I used various methods such as transcribing, ear-training in multiple forms, and improvisation exercises, to develop my musical personality. The research resulted in a nine-song album that Mikael Máni and I created in 2020 under the artist-name Tendra. That album is my examination project. I learned a great deal from the experience. I gained self-confidence, independence trust and calmness during this journey, and at last I feel comfortable with who I am as an artist – my musical personality has finally moved in.

Martínez Casas, Vicente 09 February 2024 (has links)
[EN] Since last century, Musical dictation has been the main practice used in the subject of Solfeggio in conservatories for the ear training. The aims of the present work are as follows: 1. To analyse the current situation of ear training and the phenomenon of hearing from different approaches; and 2. To elaborate a methodological proposal for the second year of Solfeggio in Professional Music Education in the conservatories of the Valencian Community, through this previous analysis. To this end: a vision has been given of the ear training through musical education, from the point of view of the pupil and the teacher, and the elements that influence hearing and condition musical training have been analysed, as well as the most suitable strategies for the integral ear training. The aim of this thesis is to offer a didactic proposal, methodologically broad and varied, which contributes significantly to ear training, based on the use of musical literature as the main source of content. The conclusions obtained in this work will offer a methodological alternative to traditional musical dictation in order to train the musical ear in a more complete and integral way through the musical repertoire of all periods. / Martínez Casas, V. Absolutní sluch v teorii i praxi / Absolute Pitch: Theoretical Concept and Practical Issues

Bártová, Jitka January 2016 (has links)
The thesis aims at complex assessment of absolute pitch both theoretically and practically. It describes the functioning of ear and main issues related to processing of sound and tone height. In addition, it clarifies related terms stemming from musical psychology. Especially, it endeavours to identify causes of absolute pitch and factors which form it. The thesis surveys several phenomena connected with absolute pitch, for example with synesthesia, and with other aspects such as occurrence of absolute pitch among population. More practical part of research consists in a questionaire used for verification of hypotheses related to absolute pitch. The thesis uses not only the Czech but especially English written literature which has not yet been used in such a scope in the Czech musical research.
