The local government system in the Hautes-Pyrenees department under the Napoleonic regimeFujihara, Shota 04 November 2016 (has links)
For the longest time, Napoleon was the centerpiece of studies concerning the Napoleonic age. However, over the past thirty years, several important studies about the Consulate and the Empire have been shedding a new light on the socio-political history of this era. In this thesis, we review the administrative and centralizing structure established during the Napoleonic era, which represents a key period to discuss and observe the issues about the onset of the Nation-State. In the first part, The Nation-State and the notables, the reality of the local power established during the Napoleonic age is discussed. Initially, we explain the sociology of the local administrators and notables who compose the local power, then we analyse the relations between these notables and the prefectural administration by clearly defining the effective functioning of the councils instituted in each local administrative ward, and of the communal municipalities. In the second part, The Nation-State and the local order, we approach several administrative domains concerning the “security”, matters during the onset of the Nation-State. This thesis will set to define how these administrative domains have led to a three tier exerted power, central power, local power and people, which in turn constructed and gave birth to the local government system under the Napoleonic regime. To answer these questions, we choose the Hautes-Pyrenees department. Indeed, to relativize the territorial evidence of France geographically and psychologically, the border area of the Pyrenees is an interesting case for our study.

The long shadow of the emperor: fear and British press during the Napoleonic Wars (1795 - 1815) : A quantitative study on the history of the emotionsRuiz-Tapiador Bartolomé, Juan January 2022 (has links)
"The long shadow of the emperor: fear and British press during the Napoleonic Wars (1795 –1815)” was a master thesis that combined the history of emotions with the use of quantitative computational techniques. The main objectives of the project were to detect and analyse the fear around the figure of Napoleon Bonaparte in the British press, between 1795 and 1815, and to check the feasibility of the proposed quantitative techniques for the history of emotions. The methodology consisted of the bibliographic collection of terms, web scrapping techniques, the creation of a database of mentions, and the emotional analysis of the subsequent information. The results showed how the emotion of fear was experienced in the British press, and the great explanatory potential of the methodology proposed by the study. The findings have revealed valuable information about international politics, public opinion, and erroneous assumptions in our current understandings of the Napoleonic Wars.

L’Intransigenza nella Curia : il caso di Francesco Luigi Fontana (1750-1822) / Intransigence in the Roman Curia : the case of Francesco Luigi Fontana (1750-1822) / L’Intransigeance au sein de la Curie romaine : le cas Francesco Luigi Fontana (1750-1822)Ranica, Marco 06 July 2017 (has links)
This doctoral thesis is focused on the history of the Roman Church between the end of the 18th Century and the beginning of the 19th Century. Using Francesco Luigi Fontana’s biography, I will describe the ecclesiastical dynamics and the different sensibilities of the curiali (the members of the Roman Curia) who cooperated with the barnabite to find a solution for both intraecclesiali and extraecclesiali problems submitted to Rome from all over the world.Consequently I will outline the developments in policymaking, in order to represent a non-monolithic Roman Curia, in which –conversely– different solutions were examined before making a definitive political decision.Furthermore this doctoral thesis reflects upon the problems linked to the paradigm chosen and upon the opportunity to use a biography and the category of intransigenza –employed in this study to interpret the intellectual, political and ecclesiological opinions of the curiali– to determine the crucial issues and to identify the elements of continuity of ecclesiastical history.

Early Nineteenth Century German Idealism and Historical Perspectives in Beethoven's Eroica Variations, Op. 35Tiraterra, Alessandra January 2017 (has links)
This study argues that the dialectic and the metamorphosis of the basso del tema and tema in Beethoven’s Eroica Variations, Op. 35 mirror the stages of the philosophical thought of German Idealism. The philosophical systems of the post-Kantian generation were housed in the values of the Goethezeit, in which the concept of self was regarded as fundamental for the worldview. In Germany these systems generated a new intellectual ethos that merged cultural nationalism with the glorification of the self (Burnham). Beethoven’s music gave reliable expression to the values of the Goethezeit, depicting the self as a spiritual entity with a constitutive autonomy, a possibility for self-transcendence, and a fundamental condition of struggle for freedom. While research has focused on Beethoven’s heroic style (Broyles) and the philosophy of his music (Adorno), there is very little literature on the relationship between Beethoven’s music and the philosophical thought of the time. In 1930 Schenker discussed the use of the Eroica theme in the Eroica Variations (Marston): first, the material is stated in its simple form; then, rhythmic structure, dynamics, tempo, texture, and key transform it. Schenker considers the large-movement form rather than the theme, giving emphasis to the basso del tema. This study proposes an analysis of Op. 35–focusing first on the first fourteen variations and then on the fifteenth variation and on the fugue individually–as the musical statement of the philosophical thought of the Goethezeit and offers a discussion on the historical perspectives in Op. 35. Then, the study applies the proposed philosophical and historical analysis of the Eroica Variations to explain how an interpretation based on critical theory can help concert performers develop a deeper understanding of such a demanding piece of repertoire. Finally, the study examines the Eroica Variations as one of the most substantial concert pieces for piano by Beethoven and of the beginning of the nineteenth century, and offers suggestions on how to meet the musical and technical challenges of the piece. / Music Performance
