TECHNO-ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF A PHOTOVOLTAIC POWER PLANT SUPPLYING ELECTRICITY FOR A LARGE SCALE REVERSE OSMOSIS DESALINATION UNIT IN AGADIR, MOROCCOJustin CasimirCasimir, Justin January 2013 (has links)
Legislation about the water use in Morocco including the watering of green spaces is about to change. Indeed, the watering of green spaces will have to be made from waste water treatment plant. This report focuses on a golf course located in Agadir which is subject to the new regulation. The option studied through this paper is the desalination of salt water powered by solar energy. This paper focuses specifically on the generation of solar energy. The aim of the report is to compare the levelized cost of water express in €/m3 for three different alternatives: A) water from the drinking water plant; B) water from a reverse osmosis desalination plant driven by electricity from the national grid; C) water from a reverse osmosis desalination plant driven mainly by solar energy and some electricity from the national grid. The paper will first present the boundary conditions for the case study (part I), the technical analysis (part II-A & B) and then the economic analysis (part II-C). Part III presents the results, based on the simulation results from the software PVsyst, for both the technical and economic analysis and part IV explains the technical part in more detail. In the conclusion, the writer of the report would recommend to another in depth economic analysis in few years as the capital cost for the system with the reverse osmosis desalination plant and the photovoltaic plant is at the moment too high. However, regarding at the levelized cost of water, this case study become competitive with the other alternative. Moreover, looking at the environmental issues (water depletion, greenhouse gas emission) one could decide to take action and therefore take some economic risks.

Software development of visualization tool for 3DStenmarck, Martin January 2011 (has links)
The visualization is an important and vital tool of describing complex data for an uninitialized user. SICK has developed an array of advanced machine vision cameras all capable of producing large data sets of information at a high rate. Although capable of fast data handling and the ability of controlling robots and other types of controls, the data used for these calculations can be showed for an easy and fast feedback to the users or in a sales situation. The visualization available today, although fairly fast, is limited to a gradient textured model with few tools. Based on OpenGL the current visualization requires a wrapper to handle correctly within .NET applications which is the preferred platform at SICK. This thesis studies the possibility and development of new visualization tool based on .NET capable of adding textures and interaction with the visualization. Since the data derived from the different cameras can occur in so many different ways a robust application ia needed. With the use of Windows presentation Foundation (WPF) framework the application is divided in three components. The first one is a library capable of reading the correct section of the file and then structuring the data. The second component is a user control; this allows the visualization to be constructed and displayed with ease within all .NET applications. The third component is a application which make use of the two other components to display and interact with the visualization. The developed visualization can display several different textures and has support for full navigation in the form of zoom, panning and rotation. The application is developed in .NET for easy integration with other applications and tools. WPF has a straightforward way of handling 3d content, however it is mostly used for small elements of 3D not for as large models as provided by the cameras. By subsampling the data set, the loading time can be reduced to an acceptable value. Although visualizing the data in a detailed and interactive way, the WPF-framework is on its knees when handling the larger files. There are several limitations in WPF which indicates the unsuitability as the main graphical engine.

Sources and Controls of Sulphur Export in Precambrian Shield Catchments in South-central OntarioEimers, M. Catherine January 2002 (has links)
A series of studies was undertaken at Plastic Lake-1 (PC1) to determine the sources and controls on S cycling in small headwater catchments on the Precambrian Shield in south-central Ontario. Two observations were made about the S cycle in this region: (1) all streams exhibit highly coherent temporal patterns in SO4 concentrations and export, and (2) most catchments exported more SO4 in stream water than is received in bulk deposition during the past 2 decades. Synchronous temporal patterns in annual SO4 concentrations in both upland and wetland-draining streams were related to changes in climate, specifically those factors that determine catchment dryness. The number of days with no stream flow or stream flow below a critical threshold was a good predictor of the average stream SO4 concentration in a particular year. Sulphate chemistry in the PC1 outflow is highly dependent on processes occurring in a conifer <i>Sphagnum</i> swamp located immediately upstream of the chemical sampling station. Hydrologic inputs to the swamp during the summer determine whether S is retained or released from peat on an annual basis. Drying and re-wetting of <i>Sphagnum</i>-derived peat caused a substantial increase in soluble SO4 in laboratory experiments, which was slightly enhanced at higher temperature, but alternating moisture conditions had no immediate effect on <i>Sphagnum</i>. Despite large inter-annual changes in SO4 release, over the long-term (<i>i. e. </i> 20-years) SO4 inputs and exports from the swamp are in approximate balance. In contrast, the upland portion of PC1 (<i>i. e. </i> PC1-08) consistently exports more SO4 than is input in bulk deposition in every year of record. Even when inputs are increased to account for potential underestimates in dry deposition or weathering, the majority of catchments in this region exhibit net export in many years. Two internal sources are suggested to account for negative budgets: desorption and mineralization. Adsorption/desorption reactions respond directly to changes in SO4 input concentration, and lysimeter data indicate the importance of these processes for buffering short-term changes in SO4 concentration in LFH percolate. Desorption may be the primary direct response of upland soil to decreasing SO4 inputs in deposition and may substantially extend the period of net SO4 export in catchments that have large adsorbed SO4 pools such as PC1. However, the adsorbed pool may be sustained by continuous net release from mineralization, and should also be considered in budget calculations. Mineralization was shown to be responsive to drying and re-wetting events and temperature, although results varied among different materials. Sulphate release from mineral soil did not appear to be influenced by changing moisture, temperature or deposition chemistry in laboratory experiments, although adsorption/desorption reactions may have largely masked small changes in SO4 release <i>via</i> mineralization. The magnitude of organic S storage in mineral soil indicates that this pool could be an important source of export over the long-term. While it is unknown why (or if) mineralization is a net source of SO4 to drainage streams, changes in climate and/or deposition could potentially influence SO4 release from organic compounds. Soil moisture and temperature are important controls on microbial processes in soil, and changes in climate that bring about changes in soil moisture or temperature conditions could affect decomposition and mineralization processes. Similarly, historically high inputs of S and N in deposition may have brought about slow shifts in litter quality (<i>i. e. </i> decreased C:N, C:S) which could also potentially influence decomposition and mineralization rates. In order to predict the future response of surface water chemistry to changes in SO4 (and N) deposition, it is important to consider not only the magnitude of S pools in soil, but also the potential for SO4 cycling between pools. Likewise, models that predict changes in stream SO4 by adsorption isotherm data alone will underestimate the importance of desorption unless the potential for continual replenishment of the adsorbed pool through the relatively slower process of mineralization is also considered. In general, predictions of recovery from S deposition can only be made from a complete understanding of S pools, transformations, and the effects of climate, which are superimposed upon the long-term trend in deposition.

Innovation in e-Business Models: a Net-Enabled Business Innovation Cycle (NEBIC) Theory PerspectiveBasiouni, Abdullah Faisal January 2012 (has links)
Despite potentially increased sales and operational efficiencies, a surprising number of firms have not adopted e-business. Annual surveys of e-business use in Canada and other Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries reveal significant differences in adoption rates between sectors. The surveys identify product characteristics as a key rationale for not adopting online selling. There are examples, however, of firms in all sectors that have discovered how to use online selling (i.e., through direct retailing, portals, online auctions - or other models). This research identifies the key internal capabilities that let firms implement online selling tools and reconfigure their way of doing business, by innovating their business model, to take advantage of e-business.
Wheeler’s (2002) Net-Enabled Business Innovation Cycle (NEBIC) model is a theoretical framework for studying the process of implementing e-business tools as technology innovations for business growth where “net-enablement” refers to a firm’s innovative use of networks connected via information technologies. The NEBIC model suggests four sets of capabilities a firm needs to create value for its customers by utilizing technology: choosing enabling technologies, matching technology benefits with economic opportunities, executing business innovation for growth, and assessing customer value. The model is grounded in dynamic capability and absorptive capacity theories, offering an integrated way to adopt an e-business application, such as online selling, using internal capabilities that management can develop through planning, knowledge acquisition, training, and recruitment.
This research is the first to operationalize the constructs in the NEBIC model and increase the understanding of the firm capabilities required to implement online selling as a technology innovation for business growth. The study also extends the NEBIC model by developing a construct to measure the innovation in business models firms need as they implement online selling tools. Data gathered from a national sample of Canadian firms are analyzed to test four hypotheses. These concern net-enablement capabilities, and the selection and implementation of online selling, together with the associated outcome of such innovation in terms of business model innovation.
The overarching hypothesis is that firms that successfully select and implement online selling have better developed net-enablement capabilities. Further, those firms will innovate their business model. The research to test these hypotheses proceeded in two stages. First, exploratory research accessed both current literature and feedback from academic and professional experts to identify and develop scales and measurements for the net-enablement constructs of the research model. In the second empirical stage, these scales were used to measure capability development and business model innovation in a cross-section sample of Canadian firms. Responses to an online survey were analyzed to test the statistical properties of the scales, and structural equation modeling (SEM) assessed the hypothesized relationships between net-enablement capability for online selling and actual business model innovation.
The research contributes to the literature on e-business adoption, and the application of dynamic capability and absorptive capability theories for technology adoption. In particular, it provides empirical support for Wheeler’s NEBIC model for e-business tools selection and implementation. The data confirm that firms with better-developed net-enablement capabilities are more likely to select and implement online selling tools successfully. The data also substantiate the view that online sellers have indeed innovated their business models to incorporate the practical tools of online selling.
Practitioners considering extending their market through online sales are advised to assess their net-enablement capability first. The scales developed through this research provide a tool for identifying these important capabilities and routines within organizations. It is particularly important that firms looking to incorporate online selling should evaluate (and develop as necessary) their ability to access new technology; evaluate their strategic options and match them with the benefits of the proposed technology; handle, manage, and implement the project; and reconfigure elements of their business model, i.e., make changes to their product or service and its payment methods. Successful online sellers do not depend on a single factor; rather they develop “net-enablement” capability, a continuous and multi-faceted process of related capability sets that involve all parts of the organization.

A novel approach to emergency management of wireless telecommunication systemHe, Yong 20 June 2008 (has links)
The survivability concerns the service continuity when the components of a system are damaged. This concept is especially useful in the emergency management of the system, as often emergencies involve accidents or incident disasters which more or less damage the system. The overall objective of this thesis study is to develop a quantitative management approach to the emergency management of a wireless cellular telecommunication system in light of its service continuity in emergency situations namely the survivability of the system. A particular wireless cellular telecommunication system, WCDMA, is taken as an example to ground this research.<p>The thesis proposes an ontology-based paradigm for service management such that the management system contains three models: (1) the work domain model, (2) the dynamic model, and (3) the reconfiguration model. A powerful work domain modeling tool called Function-Behavior-Structure (FBS) is employed for developing the work domain model of the WCDMA system. Petri-Net theory, as well as its formalization, is applied to develop the dynamic model of the WCDMA system. A concept in engineering design called the general and specific function concept is applied to develop a new approach to system reconfiguration for the high survivability of the system. These models are implemented along with a user-interface which can be used by emergency management personnel. A demonstration of the effectiveness of this study approach is included.<p>There are a couple of contributions with this thesis study. First, the proposed approach can be added to contemporary telecommunication management systems. Second, the Petri Net model of the WCDMA system is more comprehensive than any dynamic model of the telecommunication systems in literature. Furthermore, this model can be extended to any other telecommunication system. Third, the proposed system reconfiguration approach, based on the general and specific function concept, offers a unique way for the survivability of any service provider system.<p>In conclusion, the ontology-based paradigm for a service system management provides a total solution to service continuity as well as its emergency management. This paradigm makes the complex mathematical modeling of the system transparent to the manager or managerial personnel and provides a feasible scenario of the human-in-the-loop management.

The response of the growing pig to changes in energy intake achieved through changes in dietary energy concentration versus restriction of feed intakeMarriott, Jennifer P. 04 October 2010 (has links)
This study was undertaken to compare the effects of changing energy intake, either by restricting feed intake or by altering dietary energy concentration, on the growth performance of pigs. The relative abilities of the DE, ME and NE systems to predict pig growth performance were also evaluated. A total of 72 barrows, having initial body-weights of 30 ± 2 kg, were randomly assigned to one of nine dietary treatments. These treatments were organized in a 3 x 3 factorial arrangement consisting of three dietary energy concentrations (2.18, 2.29 and 2.40 Mcal NE/kg) and three levels of feed allowance (80, 90 and 100% of ad libitum). Actual feed allowances of 79, 91 and 100% of ad libitum were achieved. No interactive effects of feeding level and dietary energy concentration were observed (P > 0.10). Increases in feed allowance from 79 to 91 to 100% of ad libitum resulted in increases in daily intakes of feed (P < 0.0001) and energy (P < 0.0001). Improvements in the rate (P < 0.0001) and efficiency (P < 0.0001) of body-weight gain were also noted. Additionally, feeding level affected the amount of energy available for body-weight gain on a daily (P < 0.0001) but not on a total (P > 0.10) basis. The efficiency with which dietary energy was used for weight gain was unaffected by feeding level (P > 0.10). Increases in dietary energy concentration were accompanied by decreases in daily feed intakes (P = 0.0016); however, dietary energy concentration did not affect daily energy intakes (P > 0.10). Neither average daily gains nor feed conversion efficiencies were affected by changes in dietary energy concentration (P > 0.10). Additionally, there were no differences among energy concentration treatments in terms of the amount of dietary energy available for body-weight gain (P > 0.10) or the efficiency with which it was used (P > 0.10). No differences were observed between the DE, ME and NE systems in terms of their abilities to predict the growth performance of pigs. The present study demonstrates that the energy intake of pigs can be effectively manipulated via adjustments in feeding level and that changes in dietary energy density, over the range studied here, are unable to affect changes in energy intake. This finding indicates that extreme caution should be used when extrapolating data obtained from studies in which feed allowance was manipulated to scenarios (e.g. commercial practice) in which energy density is to be altered, and vice versa.

The effect of the screen coverage on preventing the entry of wild bird into the poultry farmsChiu, Jieh-ju 08 February 2010 (has links)
The avian influenza virus can be transmitted from sick birds to other birds by fecal and oral secretion. Therefore, when birds with avian influenza virus enter domestic bird farms and make contacts, it is possible to carry the virus in and transmit it to domestic birds. Since the outbreak of the avian influenza in Taiwan, most bird farms had set up the screen. Yet, the actual effectiveness of screen coverage rate has not been researched. This study will discuss further regarding the results of different screen coverage rate in preventing wild birds¡¦ entering to poultry farms in Kaohsiung area. Field observations were carried out at the wetlands in Kaohsiung county, including Old Railroad Bridge artificial wetland, Fongshan reservoir and 20 poultry farms which were less than five kilometers away from wetlands from September 2008 to October 2009. Chicken and duck farms were analyzed respectively, and the screen coverage rate was categorized into full, partial and no coverage, respectively. The aims of the study were to investigate the effect of screen coverage on the entrance of wild birds to the farms, and found out the potential bridge species near poultry farms. By observing different levels of screen coverage in poultry farms, migratory birds¡¦ activity, and the contact situation between wild and domestic birds, we can analyze the contact level of high risk species and speculate possible transmission path of the avian influenza, and understand the effectiveness of the screens. Also, showing the correlation between the density of domestic poultry and the number of wild bird enterance. The result showed, in terms of screen with different coverage rates, the number of bird species within the duck farms had significant different in full and no coverage. The number of total birds within the duck and chicken farms with full coverage was significant less than partial coverage. Both in chicken and farms, screen had a great effectively in preventing small sized birds entering, yet not on big sized birds. The density of domestic poultry and the number of wild bird enterance showed negative correlation only in chicken farms with partial coverage. In terms of the wild land birds entering poultry farms, Passeer montanus is the largest species, followed by Hirundo rustica and Streptopelia tranquebarica. As for aquatic birds, it is mainly of Ardeidae, Scolopacidae, Charadriidae and Rallidae. Among all, Passeer montanus, Hirundo rustica, Streptopelia tranquebarica, and Bubulcus ibis are not migratory birds and highly pathogenic avian influenza virus species which move between poultry farms and wetlands. Therefore, they were considered bridge species. Due to the bridge species makes direct contacts with poultry, it might be the spreader of the virus. Decreasing the possibility of wild birds¡¦ contact with poultry is an important mechanism for avian influenza control. Also, based on the model of European Food Safety Authority (ESFA), risk assessments will be conducted on Kaohsiung County wetland¡¦s migratory birds¡¦ highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N1 transmission to poultry farms.
