Carregamento lateral em fundações profundas associadas a solos tratados : concepção, provas de carga e diretrizes de projeto / Laterally loaded deep foundations associated with treated soils: conception, load tests and design guidelines

Faro, Vitor Pereira January 2014 (has links)
Current engineering works typically envolve large structural units whose design and implementation should be closely observed. Due to the complexity of the loads and structural needs, the design methodologies should comply specific requirements. The geotechnical variability combined with the loads diversity imposes the need to develop methodologies applied specifically to projects whose foundations will be laterally loaded, like bridges, harbors, transmission line towers, onshore and offshore wind turbines, among others. There are several methods reported in geotechnical literature to design piles that will be subjected to horizontal loads. However, none of these methods consider a solution based on a simple soil reinforcement using cementation techniques, in a superficial layer, radial to pile. The main goal of this research is to study the behavior of deep foundations with a reinforced soil system, subjected to lateral loads. Design guidelines are presented, leading to a model that predicts the ultimate load capacity of deep foundations subjected to these types of efforts. Field tests and tridimensional numerical simulations using the Finite Element Method were performed in order to achieve a better understanding of the behaviour of laterally loaded piles. Considering the pile diameter (D) and its depth (L), different L/D ratio were defined, corresponding to rigid and flexible piles. Using these L/D ratios, in both natural and reinforced soils, numerical and field tests were performed to provide experimental evidences of its behaviour. Numerical tests consisted in a parametric analysis where different geometric (pile and treated soil) and geotechnical parameters, necessaries to the Mohr-Coulomb model, have been modified. The proposed prediction model is based on the analysis of the numerical simulations results, using ABAQUS® software, validated with the field tests. It is important to point that in this study only geotechnical rupture is considered. Therefore it is assumed that piles have elastic behaviour. Has been concluded that the use of a superficial treated layer, radial to pile, considerably improves the system performance, increasing the lateral load capacity and decreasing their deformation, showing that this technique could be a promising solution to deep foundations subjected to horizontal loads.

Élaboration de carbures cémentés à gradient de propriétés par procédé d’imbibition réactive : Application aux inserts WC-Co et aux taillants en diamant polycristallin pour le forage pétrolier en conditions sévères / Functionally graded cemented carbides elaboration by reactive imbibition process : Application for WC-Co inserts and PDC cutters for oil drilling in harsh conditions

Ther, Olivier 16 December 2014 (has links)
In oil drilling industry, harsher working conditions require ever new and more abrasive wear and impact resistant tools. To meet this challenge, the work presented here, is to develop graded cemented carbide materials by reactive imbibition process. This method can be divided into two gradation processes, namely, reactive coating and imbibition. Imbibition gradually enriches the core of dense cemented carbide with binder phase and is based on the principle of liquid phase migration in a solid-liquid body. Reactive coating also takes place in dense cemented carbide on which a boron nitride coating is deposited. After reaction with the WC-Co liquid binder, some ternary boride precipitations take place from surface to several millimeters deep. For industrial parts (inserts for roller cone bits and PDC (Polycrystalline Diamond Compact) cutters substrates), hardness gradients obtained can reach 450 HV on 25 mm. Such gradients development is passed through a better understanding of kinetics and phenomena occurring during imbibition and reactive coating. In case of PDC cutters, influence of HPHT process parameters, allowing diamond table synthesis, on the WC-Co substrate gradient, generated by reactive imbibition, was studied. This work was also interested in gradient effect on the obtained diamond tables properties. After mechanical tests, graded WC-Co inserts and graded PDC cutters show a significant increase of both wear resistance (from 30 to 100%) and impact resistance (from 20 to 40%).

ICME guided development of cemented carbides with alternative binder systems

Walbrühl, Martin January 2017 (has links)
The development of alternative binder systems for tungsten carbide (WC) based cemented carbides has again become of relevance due to possible changes in EU regulations regarding the use of Cobalt (Co). A framework for the ICME (Integrated Computational Materials Engineering) based Materials Design is presented to accelerate the development of alternative binder systems. Part one of this work deals with the design of the cemented carbide composite hardness. It has been shown that the intrinsic binder hardness is comparable to a bulk metal alloy and that based on the binder solubilities a solid solution strengthening model developed in this work can be employed. Using a method presented in this work the non-equilibrium, frozen-in binder solubilities can be obtained. Both the design of the binder phase and composite hardness is presented based on a general Materials Design approach. Part two deals with a multiscale approach to model the surface gradient formation. The experimentally missing data on liquid binder diffusion has been calculated using AIMD (Ab initio Molecular Dynamics). The diffusion through the liquid cemented carbide binder has to be reduced to an effective diffusion value due to the solid carbides acting as obstacles that increase the diffusion path. The geometrical reduction of the diffusion has been investigated experimentally using the SIMS (secondary ion mass spectroscopy) technique in WC-Nickel-58Nickel diffusion couples. The geometrical contribution of the so-called labyrinth factor has been proven by the combination of the experiments and in conjunction with DICTRA simulations using the precise liquid AIMD diffusivities. Unfortunately, despite the improved kinetic database and the geometrical diffusion reduction, the surface gradient formation cannot be explained satisfactory in complex cemented carbide grades. Additional, but so far unidentified, contributions have to be considered to predict the surface gradient thickness. /
QC 20170919

Debras, Colin 21 July 2016 (has links)
Tungsten carbide and Cobalt (WC‐Co) dies are used for cold forming processes of steel because of their exceptional performances in resisting wear phenomena. This work aims to a better understanding of the complex damage mechanisms that eventually cause wear. This complexity comes from the existing relationships between their microstructure and their macroscopic mechanical properties. For a better understanding of the damage mechanisms leading towards wear, a four‐step strategy is presented. The first step is the cold heading dies sampling directly on the production line. They are collected at different lifetimes. The second step is the identification of the die rheology. It is followed by numerical modeling of the forging process to calculate the stress field and plastic strain magnitude. The third step is to characterize the local evolution of the surface properties along three axes: the tribological, the morphological and mechanical aspects. These analyses quantify the progressive decrease of contact conditions correlated with surface embrittlement and WC carbide grains debonding. To understand the mechanisms that lead to the grains debonding, a set of 2D mesoscale contact models are performed. The fracture energy between a WC grain and the rest of the material is computed using cohesive elements. These models show that the sensitivity to debonding depends not only on the contact conditions and the material fracture toughness, but also on the grain size and grain configuration in the vicinity of the surface.
