Investigations of Novel NxSy Technetium and Rhenium Chelants

Bennett, Samantha 06 1900 (has links)
This thesis describes the synthesis and complexation of amino acid based chelants for technetium and rhenium. All of the chelates were of the NxSy type. An initial N2S2 diamido dithiol peptide of the type mercaptoacetic acid-serine-cysteine was synthesized and coordinated with both rhenium and technetium. The complexes were analysed by NMR spectroscopy and found to retain the benzyl moieties. Syn and anti diastereoemers were produced with one conformation preferred over the other. This was not true of another chelant RP294 supplied by Resolution Pharmaceuticals. The N2N1'S1 chelant consisted of dimethyl-glycine-serine-cysteineglycine and was a novel variation of the N2S2 tripeptide used initially. The coordination of this N3S chelant to technetium resulted in the formation of equal 1:1 quantities of diastereomers. Analysis was done by NMR spectroscopy and electrospray mass spectrometry. The two diastereomers were found to slowly interconvert and a mechanism for the interconversion proposed. The radiopharmaceutical RP128 (dimethylglycineserine-cysteine-glycine-threonine-lysine-proline-proline-arginine), of which the RP294 is the chelating portion, was coordinated to technetium. Analysis of the bifunctional chelant and its coordination complex by NMR spectroscopy demonstrated that the targeting portion of the molecule was unaffected by the technetium. Two diastereomers of the TcO(RP128) complex were found, as seen for the chelating portion of the molecule, TcO(RP294). / Thesis / Master of Science (MS)

The Spiro-Helical Antenna

Ghoreishian, Idine 11 September 1999 (has links)
A novel antenna made of a spiral wire wrapped into a larger helical shape is introduced. The geometry of this antenna, which is a doubly helical structure, is fully described by five independent parameters, including two radial dimensions, two pitch angles, and the number of turns. Radiation properties of this antenna are examined both theoretically and experimentally. The Numerical Electromagnetic Code (NEC-2) is used to obtain simulation results. A large number of cases with different radii, pitch angles, and number of turns are investigated. Results for far-field patterns, gain, axial ratio, and bandwidth are presented. The influence of parameters on radiation properties are examined. Several prototypes of the antenna were constructed and tested using an outdoor antenna range. Measured far-field patterns are presented over a wide range of frequencies. The measured and computed radiation patterns are in good agreement. The results of this study indicate that the proposed antenna provides circular polarization and high gain over a wide frequency range. For example, when the number of turns is 10, a gain of 11-14 dB, a boresight axial ratio of less than 3 dB, and a half-power beamwidth of about 40 degrees are achieved over a 30% bandwidth. The side-lobe level for most cases examined is better than 10 dB below the main beam. A unique advantage of this antenna is its much smaller size compared with a conventional helical antenna made of straight wire shaped into a helix. Having about the same radiation characteristics, including gain, circular polarization, bandwidth, and side-lobe level, this new antenna occupies a volume more than 2.5 to 3 times smaller than the conventional helix. This reduction in size, which in turn may imply smaller weight and lower packaging and manufacturing costs, makes the proposed antenna very appealing to many communications and aerospace applications. / Master of Science

Novel Addiction: Consuming Popular Novels in Eighteenth-century Britain

Min, Jayoung January 2011 (has links)
<p>This dissertation explores the ways in which British popular novels of the eighteenth century functioned as commodities. "Novel Addiction", the title of this dissertation has a double meaning: Addiction was a new conceptual framework developed during the eighteenth century in order to manage the increasing anxiety brought upon the culture of consumption, and the novel, one of the most popular commodities of the same period, was addictive. Both as successful commodities and efficient cultural agents, popular novels that were categorized as the sentimental or the gothic participated in the process of creating and disseminating models of addiction that warranted perpetual discipline. However, this discipline does not aim at preventing or eliminating addiction. It rather manages addiction as "habit" in a way that guarantees proliferation of the market economy. By employing the framework of addiction, I intend to reconfigure the role of the novel in the construction of individual and collective models of consumption-oriented subjectivity. </p><p>The first chapter begins with Eliza Haywood's Present for Women Addicted to Drinking where the author proposes novel-reading as the best cure for alcohol addiction, which allows me to explore a parallel between the phenomenon called the "gin craze" and the proliferation of print commodities. The second and third chapter discuss the sentimental novel and the gothic novel respectively focusing on the characteristics of each genre that make them addictive. The fourth and final chapter discusses Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey and Sense and Sensibility, which address and attempt to manage "novel addiction," a problem posed by the popular novels of her contemporaries.</p> / Dissertation

Entre a convenção e o deslocamento: uma análise do realismo em Watchmen / Between convention and displacement: an analysis of Watchmen\'s realism

Bezerra, Rômulo 05 April 2016 (has links)
This thesis aims to approximate two distinctive fields: Literature and Comics. It intends to analyse how Watchmen constructs and organizes its narrative from a realistic assumption. In order to do so, this thesis approximate two genres: the literary novel and the graphic novel. The rise of both genres indicates similarities between the two fields. After that, the two-part analysis is presented. The first part consists of listing and interpreting Watchmens visual structure (speech bubbles, panel format, drawing style) and how they reveal a play between mimetic convention and displacement from it. The second part focuses on Watchmens chapters II and XI and analyses how the super-heroi character is constructed; what does it mean to make a realistic super-hero in Watchmens context.
