Compared to traditional thermal spray, cold spray as a new emerging surface treatment eliminates or substantially reduces phase transformation of deposited material and reduces coating porosity. Therefore, the appearance of this new type of surface treatment and additive manufacturing process has attracted considerable attention from researchers. In this research, three-dimensional modeling of Al6061-T6 particle impact and cohesion process was simulated by utilizing commercial finite element analysis (FEA) software ABAQUS/Explicit. To guarantee that a stable bonding phenomenon can be realized in the scope of physical validity, a built-in cohesive contact behavior model was implemented in the simulation to understand the bonding phenomenon. A non-planar surface was introduced to replace the usual planar impacted surface to mimic micron-scale curvature of the sprayed target in the real condition. Simulation models of spraying particles impact on positions with spray angle corresponding to 90°, 80°, 70° were created to investigate the effect generated by the curvature for the residual stress after bonding. Curvature function was exploited to describe the non-planar surface wavy condition derived from optimized impacting angle for achieving bonding phenomenon. This numerical simulation work can provide further insights for the residual stress evolution status in the condition of realized cohesion between impactor and non-planar surface after a kinetic peening process. Beneficial suggestions toward cold spray technology utilization in additive manufacturing areas are concluded from the results of the numerical simulation.

Inter-rater Reliability and Intra-rater Reliability of Synchronous Ultrasound Imaging and Electromyography Measure of the Lumbopelvic-hip Muscle ComplexCaputo, Courtney 01 January 2020 (has links)
Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine inter-rater and intra-rater reliability of synchronous ultrasound imaging and electromyography measures of lumbopelvic-hip muscle activity performed by a novice and an experienced investigator in healthy individuals. Electromyography (EMG) has served as the gold standard for quantification of onset of muscle activation; however, ultrasound imaging can visualize muscle activity when collected simultaneously. Methods: A novice and experienced investigator collected a series of 3 ultrasound images at rest and 3 M-mode clips during contraction of each muscle while EMG electrodes collected muscle activity. Muscles collected included: external oblique, erector spinae, rectus abdominis, gluteus maximus, and gluteus medius. Participants were asked to return 48-72 hours for a second session. After all muscles were collected, muscle thickness was measured from the US images and latency based on onset of activity from EMG was processed and averaged. Results: Moderate inter-rater reliability (ICC2,k=.5-.7) was found for most thickness, modulated thickness, and latency variables between the experienced and novice raters, however rectus abdominis had poor reliability compared to the other muscles assessed. Intra-rater reliability between sessions 1 and 2 for the novice rater revealed moderate reliability (ICC2,k=.5-.7) in the abdominal muscles (external oblique, erector spinae, contracted rectus abdominis) and poor reliability in the gluteal muscles. Conclusions: Modulated thickness values had the strongest reliability for inter- and intra-rater reliability, when thickness measures were divided by body weight in kilograms before analysis. Subcutaneous tissue, notably abdominal adipose, and its role on participant positioning should receive added attention during training and instruction of novice investigators during M-mode acquisition and timing of contraction with EMG synchronization.

<p>The kinematics and associated deformation of upper crust in fossil and active convergent tectonic settings require different methods of study. In this thesis, I analyzed an example of a fossil convergent setting, the formation of the eastern portion of Paleoproterozoic Sudbury Basin, Ontario, and an example of an active convergent plate interface represented by the ongoing subduction along the Hellenic Arc at Rhodes, Greece. In Sudbury, using paleomagnetic remanence directions and Matachewan dyke orientations, I constrain the magnitudes of rotation associated with the formation of the NE-lobe, a tight secondary fold of the Sudbury Basin, as well as localize the fold axis and magnitude of rotation along the West Bay Anticline, a hitherto unknown fold of the Basin.</p> <p>For the Island of Rhodes, I corroborate the existence of two phases of Plio-Pleistocene or younger deformation including providing their principal strain axis orientations from a fault-slip analysis. In addition, I estimate the magnitude of slip from faults to generate respective incremental strain ellipses of the two deformation phases for the Island. The first phase is characterized by vertical shortening (ŝ<sub>3</sub>) and N-S extension (ŝ<sub>1</sub>) with associated normal faulting while the second phase is characterized by N-S shortening (ŝ<sub>3</sub>) and E-W extension (ŝ<sub>1</sub>) associated with strike-slip faulting.</p> / Master of Science (MSc)
