Representation of femicide according to online newspapers in Bolivia

This thesis is going to present how online newspapers addresses femicide in Bolivia. Femicide is an increasing problem in a global context but according to “Small Arms Survey Study”, Bolivia is within the 25 countries listed, where the problem is widespread and is affecting more and more women every year. The context in Bolivia is highlighted by a patriarchal culture and high alcohol consumption in general. Women are suffering different kinds of violence: physical, emotional, economical, discrimination and even femicide which means “murder of women due to the fact that they are women” In this sense the current government enacted the law number 348 protecting women from violence in Bolivia. Analyzing the representation of femicide is highly important in a society where the number of cases have increased and even more important in a society where media plays an important role, because mass media is the reference of reality, facts and ideas that are present, in this case, in a Bolivian context and the daily life of its inhabitants. The theoretical framework is almost entirely focused on representation that in words of Stuart Hall means: “Representation is the production of the meaning of the concepts in our minds through language” (1997:17). Representation of femicide which in a Bolivian context could be identified and understood by its inhabitants as a positive or negative phenomenon. This study is will be conducted through a content analysis of 370 online articles, which were found in the website archives of three mayor newspaper in Bolivia; with in a period from January 2012 to May 2016. In this sense, this study chooses articles which developed some background about the crime, not articles which talk about political reports, international reports, law, and police reports and so forth. These articles mostly show statistics or even worse; presents some femicide cases as “one more case” or “another woman is dead” as part of a common and daily thing, normalizing the violence against women in Bolivia. This thesis found the main results described in the content analysis but also described how the process of the data collection was conducted. In this sense, presented examples from different perspectives and analyzed them more carefully. Examples that show part of the reality of how mass media represents femicide in Bolivia and contributes to the normalization of violence against women. The present thesis described how online newspaper, represent femicide in Bolivia through the content analysis of 370 articles, published in three mayor newspapers, between 2012 to 2016.

A statistical analysis of high-traffic websites

The success or failure of a site is often dependent on the number of visitors it receives (often called “traffic”) and this includes newspapers that are attempting to direct larger audiences to their websites. Theoretical arguments have been made for certain factors (region, social media presence, backlinks, etc.) having a positive correlation with traffic, but few, if any, statistical analyses have been done on traffic patterns. This study looks at a sample of approximately 300 high-traffic websites and forms several regression models in order to analyze which factors are most highly correlated with Internet traffic and what the nature of that correlation is.

Male Visual Dominance Continues: a Global Study of Images of Men and Women in 750 Online Newspapers in 74 Nations.

This study examined how women were represented globally in online newspapers. Depiction of men and women in online newspapers was investigated via cropping of photographs. The photograph was examined to determine if emphasis was placed on the face or body of the human image. The researcher used the Body Index Scale coding instrument. A simple random sample of 1,969 published photographs in 750 global online newspapers was examined. A major finding was that men dominate the front screens on global online newspaper Web sites. The data concluded men were cropped with an emphasis on the head, emphasizing intellect. Women were often cropped with emphasis on the body. The significances of this study were that global online newspapers have an increasingly large impact on society. The manner in which men and women are depicted in global online newspapers play a role in how visual images can dictate stereotypes in mass culture.

An </p><p>example of electronic media is electronic paper. This paper explores the added value </p><p>and payment methods for the e-paper. We have conducted future workshops with our </p><p>target group the reader. On the basis of future workshops this paper shows that </p><p>interaction, individualization, improved selection and content, environment friendly </p><p>and saving capabilities are necessities for the e-paper to be successful. We suggest </p><p>that the e-paper must be more than just an online newspaper for people to buy it.</p>

Entrepreneurship and Digitization of News Media in a Transition Economy : Case Study on Novaya gazeta, Russia

The increased amounts of Internet users, emergence of new technologies that allow content digitization, create an entrepreneurial opportunity for news media to go online. However, the process of digitization has been happening at a different pace in different regions of the world. To understand the keys to success and to learn on mistakes, it is important to understand what are the factors that affect entrepreneurship and digitization of news media. The purpose of this study is to investigate the news media sector in Russia in terms of digitization of the newspaper content and entrepreneurial activities associated with this. After conducting a case study on online newspaper Novaya gazeta in Russia, authors conclude that transition economy factors have an impact on digitization of newspapers in Russia. Latin American online journalism : an exploratory Web-based survey for identifying international trends in print-affiliated sites

A descriptive analysis of the data from 74 editors and reporters from 62 print-affiliated newspapers sites in Latin America indicate that journalists and print-based sites follow similar broad tendencies observed in different studies inside and outside of the region. The surveyed online editors and reporters -mainly young men with university studies- have a career background in print newspapers, with salaries equals or lower than their print colleagues. They perform weekly activities more related with immediacy than multimedia, and they perceive their primary function as disseminators and interpreters of information. Working in small and integrated newsrooms, online journalists basically interact with their print partner in terms of editing content. Although, advertising is a primary source of revenue, the majority of national, regional and local print-based sites confirm that they depend on the print partner for content and financing their online operations. Furthermore, the online version of papers do not fully take advantage of the Internet technology and capabilities, particularly multimediality and interactivity, or provide too much original new media content. / text

The Evolution of a New(s) Genre

This thesis describes and analyzes how the online newspaper genre has evolved since its inception on the Internet in the mid-nineties. The overall research question is: What characterizes the online newspaper genre evolution? The thesis is based on both synchronic and diachronic studies with a multimethod approach (including six different studies involving, e.g., interviews, questionnaires and web site analyses) intended to provide a comprehensive picture of this genre evolution. On the basis of genre theory, the thesis proposes a framework for understanding online newspaper genre evolution, integrating design (layout) aspects with publisher and audience views. Applying this framework to the collected empirical material, the thesis presents a comprehensive and integrated view of this evolution. Over time, online newspapers have evolved into a specific digital genre, with genre characteristics such as content and form, distinguishing them from other digital genres. However, this rapid development has also lead to diversities in form and function, triggering both academics and practitioners to seek ways to design for consistency within the genre. Several factors have influenced the online newspaper genre evolution, e.g., inhouse attitudes, business model shifts and technological progress at the publishers’ side. The audience demographics, habits and preferences have also changed. The layout of the online newspapers has been altered into long pages stuffed with content like news streams, headlines, photos, and services not possible in the printed edition. There has also been a shift towards frequent updates throughout the day and more content produced for the web. In addition, the thesis contributes to digital genre theory by modifications relevant to the online newspaper genre. For example, the concepts of genre awareness and genre interdependence are elaborated, a framework for identifying genre characteristics is proposed, and the concept “positioning” is introduced. Further, the thesis also contributes with implications for online newspaper design and publishing with longitudinal mappings of online newspaper layout and the habits and preferences of the audience.
