Create an INSIDE environment in relation to an OUTSIDE space. What gives the feeling of being inside and what outside? How much is needed in order to make an open environment close? The aim is to design a space divider for outdoor spaces. A textile flexible surface made not only for separation but also meant to be used as wind shelter, sunshades or as space organizer during happenings. From this concept to two different textile expressions and solutions: a 3 layers curtain where the juxtaposition of layers creates different atmospheres and transparencies and a one piece cutout divider, which creates spaces.‘A project which explores the relationship between architecture and the textiles solutions in outside environments, where the rigidity of architectonic shapes meets fabrics soft expressions.’

Palestine has been witnessing enormous political, economical, social, cultural, urban…. transformation over the past 50 years resulted in changing the architectural residential designs from introverted into extraverted schemes. The latter are almost identical to all Palestine despite different climatic zones. Unlike traditional designs, contemporary architecture have, unfortunately, focused on issues such as cost, size, form and aesthetics rather than environmental, energetic, functional and socio-cultural values. Moreover, in contemporary housing, architects are more interested in interior environment than exterior. For all of these reasons, this new type of habitat extrovert is being questioned that justifying our study. This research focuses on the role of private outdoor space (traditional and modern) regarding spatial, environmental and human characteristics, How a courtyard is vital for sustainable housing in Palestine? To answer such questions, a state of the art of different benchmarks and factors involved in the housing design was presented in the first phase, the transformation it has been witnessing over time the hygrothermal quality and luminous environments. Particular attention was paid to the courtyard, a traditional form of outdoor space in the vernacular architecture and its functions. For contemporary dwelling this space takes mostly the form of a balcony or a loggia. In the second phase, the interrelationship between outdoor space and environmental quality of the Palestinian residences (traditional and contemporary) was discussed following two approaches: qualitative and quantitative. In the first one, an analytical and bioclimatic study of traditional dwellings in two cities (Jericho and Nablus) of two different climatic zones of Palestine was carried out. Then, the characteristics and the socio-environmental dimension in the contemporary housing design were investigated by conducting a questionnaire survey. For the second approach, in-situ measurements were carried out in a number of different habitat types to validate the outcomes of the first approach. Finally, in terms of conclusion, a set of design principles and recommendations were suggested that may improve the environmental quality in any future Palestinian residences.

"The owl hugs me in the forest" : Children's Experiences and Educators' Perceptions of Learning in a Swedish Mini-Forest GardenMeyer, Julia January 2019 (has links)
In recent years, there has been converging evidence on the relation between nature experiences and learning. Although outdoor experiences are not just seen as leisurely activities anymore, barriers, such as lack of resources or travel time can hinder the propagation of more outdoor educational programs. This study explores a relatively new outdoor educational setting that can help overcome these difficulties by decreasing the amount of resources, input and energy necessary to set up such measures: the educational forest garden. With lower maintenance in creating an environment that resembles an authentic ecosystem, the question remains if forest gardening can foster similar learning outcomes than those reported in other educational settings. A qualitative study in a Swedish mini-forest garden was employed to explore what types of learning are possible in this new type of setting. Interviews with two educators and eight children were conducted to find out what perceptions and experiences they communicate after spending time in the mini-forest garden. The educator’s ideas were compared with children’s accounts and observational notes on their behavior to see if there was a difference in perception and experience. Examples for learning were found in three different dimensions: cognitive, emotional and social. The explored categories were ecological literacy, language learning, attention; being comfortable outdoors, respect and care, awareness of surroundings, co-creation, teacher-student interaction, gender differences and free play and imagination. The findings indicate an overlap between teacher’s and children’s experiences and perceptions in almost all categories and similar beneficial learning outcomes with forest gardening to other outdoor educational endeavors. Along with the potential for self-development, forest gardening may be a new way to successfully teach in the outdoors with less input or resources. Although a small scale study that should not be generalized, the study gives insight to educators’ and children’s voices in a new outdoor educational setting and can help overcome the lack of children’s voices in research in general. At the same time, it adds to the limited amount of research on forest gardening and potentially helps to increase the popularity of forest gardening as a new outdoor educational method.

Inflexible Patterns : Kay Fiskers Plads and the Fight for Quality Public SpaceJome, Bergen January 2022 (has links)
Kay Fiskers Plads lies at the junction of Copenhagen’s south-bound metro line, M1, and the Øresundtog train route connecting the city with Malmö, Sweden across the Øresund channel. Surrounding the plaza are Scandinavia’s largest shopping mall, Fields, Neroport offices, Sweden’s Ferring Pharmaceuticals branch and office spaces owned by KLP Ejendomme, a Norwegian based real estate firm. The plaza is bordered by long, blank façades that struggle to bring life onto the sidewalks, streets and shared spaces between buildings. Businesses come and leave quickly around Kay Fiskers Plads, while strategies to gain a new customer base and attractive nature continue to push forward. This written presentation of research finds it’s basis in this particular space and sets to accomplish the following tasks: draw attention to the necessity of revitalizing modern urban dead zones; promote methods that, when implemented thoughtfully, can encourage a heightened sense of place / space identity for local residents and businesses; and provide updated and relevant academic literature that promotes knowledge and adds to the conversation surrounding Kay Fiskers Plads and modern urban plaza revitalization. This research thesis will collect data through methods which include semi-structured interviews and mapping of Kay Fiskers Plads by the researcher (the author). These methodologies will be closely accompanied by theoretical perspectives that aim to draw the story of Kay Fiskers Plads into relevancy against the backdrop of global and local economic phenomena, architectural patterns, mega projects and a heightened need for public, multi-use spaces of quality. Work on this thesis began eight months ago in December 2021. However, it aims to bring about a conversation through scholarship that will be discussed forthcoming between city planners, architects, business owners, investors, frequent users of the space and those who will be acquainted with it in the future. There is a pressing need for all previously mentioned parties to have a solid understanding of the far reaching effects that public space, economy, citizens and vitality play upon one another– in essence, a need for discussion on projects under the umbrella scope of urban studies. /
Exam was help online over zoom.

What has good housing architecture to be like, when the occupants are questioned. This leading question guidelines a survey among 1,600 tenants-households in eight German cities. Mainly designed as a post occupancy-evaluation the study contributes guidelines for a more userfriendly planning in urban housing construction and renovation. The survey was carried out by face-to-face interviews assisted by a standardized questionnaire, computer graphics and animation. It focuses on the inside, on floorplans, the idea of the floor plan, interior access and the combination of the interior and the private space outdoors. Space- sociology benefits from the results, as they prove, that the way of construction determines housing habits and housing needs. By means of a catalogue showing several common types of floor plans the occupants were consulted and got basic informations in order to distinguish, to evaluate and to choose among existing types of apartments. This work builds a bridge between basic resarch in housing sociology and user oriented market surveys. Unlike most studies on housing needs and demands, this survey does not operate by the fiction of a transparent line of products at housing markets and freedom of choice. Both, the design of the questionnaire and the shown types of floor-plans take the restrictions of the urban housing market into consideration as well as they mark the boundary of lower income demand and a limited knowledge about housing architecture. Many results underline the importance of intelligent links between interior and private space outdoors. Like a “green thread” running through the evaluation it’s a lesson about Number One quality issue from the view of users. We want, what we are used to. The existing housing stock engraves and restricts both, the historical residential manner and housing needs.

Architektonická studie cyklistického stadionu /dráhy/ Favorit Brno /na volné ploše v Brně Komárově/. / Architectural study of the cycling stadium / runway / Favorit Brno / on the open space in.Krejčová, Zdenka January 2018 (has links)
Architectural study of the cycling studium/ runway / Favorit Brno / on the open space in. The urban problem of the present area is the poor technical condition of the buildings, the inadequate function of the buildings. The aim of the proposal is to create a significant area of both professional and recreational sport. The main part of the work is devoted to the design of a new cycling stadium owned by TJ Favorit Brno. The hall should have sufficient capacity and facilities to hold international sporting events in cycling and athletics. At the same time it should be useful for smaller races and other events. Another requirement is that the stadium can provide enough facilities for the TJ Favorit Brno cycling club. The home base is currently a cycling stadium at the Brno Exhibition Grounds. This stadium is currently inadequate, serving only as a training course. It does not meet the conditions of the International Federation of UCI. The design of the variable space of the hall deserves a further attention at least, beacuse it will serve athletics or other sporting events. The cycling stadium is located in the northern part of the grounds. It places emphasis on the scattered surfaces in the immediate vicinity of the stadium, easy orientation and layout of entries from all sides of the object, separation of athletes from spectators. The main expression element of the exterior is a glazed facade wall, with a perforated sheet metal. Providing night lighting and putting visitors into action. The attractiveness of the whole area is enhanced by the newly designed park. A café and relaxation areas are also proposed. The total area will be separated from traffic. Two parking spaces with sufficient capacity for the whole area will be created at its edge. Transport within the premises will only be accessible for service and operation.
