Percepção e aprendizagem em exposições de ciências: um olhar para visitantes do \'Programa Ciência Itinerante\' / Perception and learning in science exhibitions: a look at \'Itinerant Science Program\' visitors

Joaquim José Soares Souza Júnior 11 December 2015 (has links)
This dissertation shows an analysis of perceptions and learning aspects present in conversations of visitors of an interactive science fair. It was used as theoretical support Vigotski\'s socio cultural perspective, specifically the part that deals with social relations between the individual and the outside world, exploring the perception and relationship between learning and development. It was pursued to approximate these ideas to the situations occurred at the interactive science event. The main objective of this paper was to understand how cognitive and affective gains generated by the interaction with the devices of a scientific event appeared in the conversations of the visitors. The public under study was composed by students of a public elementary school, and the exhibition which they participated was promoted by the \"Itinerant Science Program\" at the Instituto Federal Baiano, Uruçuca. Because it was a complex environment involving relations between humans and knowledge, it was selected the interpretative and qualitative paradigm as a methodological approach. Data collection was made through a socio cultural quiz, video recordings of interactions and semi structured interviews. To the development of the data analysis tool, it was taken the Textual Discourse Analysis methodological proposal, first using as categories the encoding system proposed by Allen (2002), called learning conversations. From the analysis, it was possible to identify conversations that were repeated at most and those that almost did not occur. The words indicating the perception of the elements in display and expressing some kind of emotion of the visitors were the most frequent. The emergence of conversation during the interaction was mainly related to three display features: the presence of human mediation, the interactive profile of the experiments and the presence of experiments that were complementary. It is hoped that this paper contributes to the understanding of the nature of learning in interactive science exhibitions, and for understanding the construction of meanings during interactions.

A Developmental Intervention Science Outreach Research Approach to Promoting Positive Youth Development

Rinaldi, Roberto L 21 March 2011 (has links)
Recent intervention efforts in promoting positive identity in troubled adolescents have begun to draw on the potential for an integration of the self-construction and self-discovery perspectives in conceptualizing identity processes, as well as the integration of quantitative and qualitative data analytic strategies. This study reports an investigation of the Changing Lives Program (CLP), using an Outcome Mediation (OM) evaluation model, an integrated model for evaluating targets of intervention, while theoretically including a Self-Transformative Model of Identity Development (STM), a proposed integration of self-discovery and self-construction identity processes. This study also used a Relational Data Analysis (RDA) integration of quantitative and qualitative analysis strategies and a structural equation modeling approach (SEM), to construct and evaluate the hypothesized OM/STM model. The CLP is a community supported positive youth development intervention, targeting multi-problem youth in alternative high schools in the Miami Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS). The 259 participants for this study were drawn from the CLP’s archival data file. The model evaluated in this study utilized three indices of core identity processes (1) personal expressiveness, (2) identity conflict resolution, and (3) informational identity style that were conceptualized as mediators of the effects of participation in the CLP on change in two qualitative outcome indices of participants’ sense of self and identity. Findings indicated the model fit the data (χ2 (10) = 3.638, p = .96; RMSEA = .00; CFI = 1.00; WRMR = .299). The pattern of findings supported the utilization of the STM in conceptualizing identity processes and provided support for the OM design. The findings also suggested the need for methods capable of detecting and rendering unique sample specific free response data to increase the likelihood of identifying emergent core developmental research concepts and constructs in studies of intervention/developmental change over time in ways not possible using fixed response methods alone.

Outreach in community archives in British Columbia: four case studies

O’Donnell, Christine Ann 11 1900 (has links)
In the past, little has been written about the practical aspects of outreach. This thesis investigates the value of outreach and how it is put into practice in British Columbia's community archives. Interviews with managers of four community archives were conducted. The findings reveal that three of the interviewees regard outreach as a high priority and a fundamental part of regular activity. For these respondents, outreach activities have been positive and beneficial. They have successfully used outreach to augment and assist with acquisition, preservation and use of archival records. Only one interviewee presented a passive and cautious approach towards outreach. Results of this study indicate that outreach activities are not influenced by the administrative setting or the budget of the archives. This study identified the essential components necessary for the implementation and delivery of successful outreach initiatives as: a regular source of funding, incorporation into an annual work plan, district goals and objectives that are relevant to the mandate of the institution, attention to the target audience, community co-operation and support, and evaluation of results. This study reaffirms the value of archivists practising outreach, and provides encouragement to those who are looking for concrete methods of approaching outreach. / Arts, Faculty of / Library, Archival and Information Studies (SLAIS), School of / Graduate

Racetrack Engineered Surface Project Initial Study and Mitigated Negative Declaration

Keller, Christina M. 01 September 2011 (has links)
The Professional Project addressed here is an Initial Study/Mitigated Negative Declaration for a project proposed by the staff of the Del Mar Fairgrounds pursuant to legal mandate by the State of California Horse Racing Board. The “Project” subject to documentation under CEQA consisted of removal of the top seven inches of the existing dirt surface on the Del Mar Fairgrounds horse racing track and temporary storage of the material on the practice track infield; installation of a new drainage system, rock filtration system, permeable asphalt layers, and seven inches of engineered surface material; widening of the track in the northeast and southeast curve area; and removal and replacement of existing retaining wall, fence, and landscaping improvements. This Project Report summarizes the stakeholder involvement concepts utilized to obtain project support and approval in an environmentally sensitive area, subject to a long history of political contention, in the midst of other long-term planning efforts such as the San Dieguito Lagoon Restoration Project, and an Updated Master Plan and Master Plan Environmental Impact Report for the fairgrounds property. Ultimately, the Project and CEQA documentation were approved by the Lead agency’s decision-making body, the Board of Directors of the State of California’s 22nd District Agricultural Association.

Evaluace spokojenosti klientů s terénním programem No Biohazard / Evaluation of client satisfaction with harm reduction progamme No Biohazard

Nováková, Kristýna January 2020 (has links)
Background: In this work, I deal with adequacy of services and needs of clients within the No Biohazard program. The purpose of the evaluation is important particularly for directors and program managers. It is the directors and managers who are often asked to justify the need for their programs. Client satisfaction is believed to be a concept that is well understood by clients, the public, public authorities and other institutions that provide funding to these organizations (WHO, UNDCP & EMCDDA, 2000). Aims: The main goal was to find out the satisfaction of clients with the offered interventions offered by the No Biohazard program to clients, optionally how particular aspects of interventions could be improved. Research questions identify sources of dissatisfaction with the interventions offered. Partial goals also include finding out the level of client satisfaction with the local and time availability of No Biohazard, creating a proposal to increase the level of No Biohazard and finally designing an inventory of Harm Reduction material that could be offered to outreach program clients. Research file: The research sample is drug users who should meet the EMCDDA definition of problem drug users. I chose respondents to the research through institutions - it was an institutional selection with a...

Transcendování a jeho význam pro socializaci a formování dítěte jako osobnosti / Transcending and its meaning for the socialization and formation process of child's personality

Bravená, Noemi January 2016 (has links)
The submitted interdisciplinary dissertation on (outreach) transcendence of the child contains two parts: theoretical and empirical one. The theoretical part analyzes this concept in terms of linguistics, philosophy of education, psychology and religious pedagogy which implies conclusions for education. It also examines the concept of an ideal homo transcendens about which we can speak of a paradoxical and typological significance. In addition to this, the work reflects the care of overlap educators, child and curriculum. The empirical part of this work presents two pre surveys: One on children, the other on adults and children. Here is also presented methodology ready for transcendence term and it has its own specifics in a group interview based on two fictional stories. Qualitative research results are presented in four units: hermeneutical, socializing, emotional- attitudinal and empowermantal. Overlap as part of the education turnover to a child is related to the child together with the turnover in the child and the teacher. KEYWORDS: transcendence, transcending, outreach, child, personality, socialization, typology, metanoia, turning-to-child education

In 2011, the Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) was founded as an effort to unite and drive materials design at an unprecedented pace. By linking computational tools with experimental data, and aligning their data structures to match and interact, scientists across the world have been able to change the way they do science at a fundamental level.

The 3 Mission Statements of the Materials Genome Initiative include: 1) Developing a Materials Innovation Infrastructure 2) Achieving National Goals with Advanced Materials 3) Equipping the Next-Generation Materials Workforce. Since the inception of the MGI the Materials Engineering community has developed numerous cyberinfrastructure repositories for experimental, and varied levels of computational data. This practice aligns with a separate initiative for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reproducible (F.A.I.R.) principles for data handling and science. By integrating the cyberinfrastructure efforts with continued collaboration from experimental and computational scientists we push the field to evolve improved workflows for research.

This thesis is a collection of applied solutions for materials design with atomistic modeling, and machine learning (ML). In Part 1, we will discuss bridges for the gaps between atomistic simulation and experiment, and what it means for material solutions. A showcase of combining experimental information with ab initio electronic transport calculations will be discussed, as well as the principles of density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. In Part 2, our focus will shift to applications of machine learning and the use of composition and chemical featurizers for materials design. Here we leverage cyberinfrastructure efforts with APIs and ML with transfer and active learning for efficient high-dimensional space exploration. In Part 3 local atomic environments and configurations, associative fingerprinting solutions, and workflows for designing deep learning (DL) interatomic potentials for MD are discussed. Finally, a brief section will conclude with efforts made to align with F.A.I.R. principles for Materials Engineering research, and educational development for Mission Statement 3 of the MGI.
