Social identity reconstruction through education : a program for older womenHodgins, Grace M. January 1991 (has links)
A substantial number of older women are adversely affected by mild to severe levels of depression. In this study the Social Health Outreach Program (SHOP), an educational intervention originally developed for middle-aged women, was modified and implemented with depressed and non-depressed older women. Through an educative process, participants learned ways to strengthen personal social networks as a means of augmenting social identity and overcoming depression. The purposes of the study were:
1) to measure the impact of SHOP on older women's levels of depression and demoralization, and on their social networks;
2) to determine factors either within or outside of SHOP that helped or hindered their progress during the program; and 3) to describe and analyze their experience of depression.
A total of 15 women, aged 58 to 76, participated in a 20 session version of SHOP over a ten week period. Measures of depression and demoralization were obtained before, after and three months following the program; social networks measures were also obtained at three month follow-up. Participants' perceptions about their experience of depression, and about program factors and other concurrent aspects of life that helped or hindered their progress during the program, were obtained in post-program interviews.
Outcomes validated SHOP'S approach and demonstrated that with slight modification the program is as effective with older women as it is with mid-life women. Participants who were
depressed at pre-test showed a significant decline in depression scores; on measures of demoralization, changes were in the direction expected, although non-significant. Participants reported significant gains to their social networks in terms of people and groups added. Content analysis of interview data yielded 205 helping incidents and 130 hindering incidents that occurred during the program period; from these, 20 categories of factors that advanced participants' progress during the program, and 19 categories of factors that impeded their progress, were determined.
This study supported the view that for many older women depression originates in their social environment. The findings validated SHOP'S educational program as a means of increasing social participation, re-constructing social identity and overcoming depression. / Education, Faculty of / Graduate

Designing an Online Outreach Program for Your LibraryAdebonojo, Leslie G., Campbell, Kathy A., Ellis, Mark E. 01 January 2009 (has links)
East Tennessee State University has a diverse student population of approximately 12,500 students. Recent statistics have indicated that the student body is bypassing the physical library building, including reference services, and connecting to online sources from off campus. With only six public service librarians whose duties include interlibrary loan, instruction, and other key library functions, librarians are limited in their ability to provide outreach to those students who might never enter the library. In this article, the authors describe the decision process in developing outreach librarian positions for the graduate programs librarian and the undergraduate student services librarian and discuss the specific services that these librarians provide to students.

Community-based clinical teaching set in a Swedish public dental service – Students and mentors perception regarding their experienceStrandberg, Oskar, Azzawi, Ahmed January 2016 (has links)
Introduction: The tenth semester of the dentistry program at Malmö university students undergoes an outreach program (internship) since 2004 and this is in collaboration with Folktandvården Skåne. During 15 weeks the students work at their assigned clinics one day a week under supervision from their tutors.Objective: To evaluate experiences after placement from the participants' perspective.Method: All dental students and tutors who have completed internship in 2006 and 2015 were asked to answer an evaluation questionnaire with numeric rating scale and scope for comments. Six students and five mentors who have completed internship in 2015 were interviewed with a semi-structured interview methodology, later analysed by content analysis method.Results: Questionnaire: rating was consistently high for both 2006 and 2015. The students scored significantly higher on question six “The set-up of one day of clinical work over 15 weeks were satisfying.” 2015 than in 2006. Students scored question eight“There is a consensus regarding methods and treatment options between the dental school and Folktandvården Skåne” significantly lower than their supervisors in 2015. In 2006 students scored question three “The composition of patients was good” significantly lower than the supervisors did. Hope for Utah:? Exploring the Long-Term Impacts of Peer-Based Suicide Prevention Among AdolescentsRainock, Meagan Rose 01 July 2018 (has links)
Current research studies on the success of peer-based outreach programs for adolescent suicide prevention are inconclusive (Mann et al. 2005; Gould et al. 2003). Fewer still have measured the feelings and experiences of the peers who are responsible for reaching out to suicidal friends within such a program. This exploratory research study examines the experiences and perspectives of past participants of an adolescent peer-based outreach program, Hope4Utah. Findings from this mixed-method study of Hope4Utah support that peer-outreach suicide prevention programs have far-reaching benefits, on both the participants and their surrounding communities, which extend into adulthood. Themes that emerged from analysis of interviews are consistent with literature on school communities, adolescent alienation, stigma reduction, compassion fatigue, and formation of social roles and mental health beliefs through the social interactionist framework. Finally, this paper explores promising avenues for future research.

The Impact of Mentoring on Social Excluded Adults in a Small Midwest CityHunt, Rose A. 01 January 2018 (has links)
Empirical data have indicated that a considerable amount of the world's population, 45.3 million in the United States, live in deplorable conditions, some of which are created by social exclusion. Social exclusion is a disenfranchisement experienced by individuals and families living in poverty conditions created by circumstances such as lack of education, lack of economic sustenance, unemployment, poor health, and other social ills. Mentoring is a multidimensional skills-development opportunity for disadvantaged youth, aspiring new professionals, employed individuals being promoted, and instructor-student relationships. There is the possibility that mentoring could be useful for other societal groups as well, particularly social excluded adults. The purpose of this phenomenological research was to examine and gain an understanding of mentoring as experienced by social excluded adults in a small Midwest city. The theoretical framework included the theory of mentoring as postulated by Kram, Bandura's social cognitive theory, the social exclusion theory by Bourdieu, and the social capital theory by Muddiman. Social excluded adults between 25 and 50 years of age were interviewed regarding their mentoring experience. Ten research participants were interviewed. A NVivo assessment was used to analyze data. The study revealed that mentor and protégé relationships among social excluded adults yielded similar positive results as in other mentored groups. The significant social change provided by this study is that outcomes of the mentoring experiences will provide policy makers and nonprofit services providers with important data to create programs that more adequately meet the needs of social excluded adults.
