Effects of oversized particles on the dynamic properties of sand specimens evaluated by resonant column testing

Shin, Boonam 18 November 2014 (has links)
This study was motivated by the fact that many times intact specimens with a number of oversized particles are dynamically tested in the laboratory and the impact of the particles on the dynamic properties is unknown. The effects of oversized particles represented by gravel particles on the shear modulus (G) and material damping ratio (D) of a uniform sand were evaluated in the linear (γ ≤ 0.001%) and nonlinear (γ > 0.001%) ranges of shear strain with combined resonant column and torsional shear (RCTS) equipment. The sand used in this investigation is a uniform sand as a reference, well-characterized material on the dynamic properties. Sand-gravel specimens were constructed using the undercompaction method. A variety of rounded gravel particles was used in building the specimens. Dynamic tests on the sand-gravel specimens were performed, and the tests results are presented. Among the findings of this investigation are that, compared to uniform sand: (1) oversized gravel particles symmetrically located along the longitudinal axis in uniform sand generally decreased slightly the small-strain shear modulus (Gmax), (2) oversized gravel particles asymmetrically located away from the longitudinal axis of rotation resulted in slight increases in Gmax and the small-strain material damping ratio (Dmin), (3) the G – log γ relationships of sand-gravel specimens with asymmetrically located gravel particles are generally above those with gravel particles symmetrically located along the longitudinal axis, and (4) the G/Gmax – log γ relationships of all specimens were reasonably close for the nonlinear ranges covered in these tests (γ < 0.05 % and G/Gmax > 0.6). As long as the oversized particles were near the axis of rotation, the particles had little effect on the dynamic properties (Gmax, Dmin and G – log γ relationships) regardless of sizes and numbers of particles. However, once the oversized particles were located away from the axis of rotation and closer to the perimeter of the specimen, the oversized particles influenced the dynamic properties. Finally, the additions of oversized particles located both symmetrically and asymmetrically in the uniform sand specimens have little impact on the nonlinear dynamic properties (G/Gmax – log γ and D – log γ relationships) which compared well with uniform sand. / text

Optimalizace procesů v dopravní společnosti / Process optimazation in transportation company

Prošek, Michal January 2014 (has links)
This diploma thesis with the company process management, and focuses on chosen processes and their optimalization in a medium-sized enterprise. The chosen enterprise belongs to leading Czech / European heavy-lift hauliers that transports mostly out-of-gauge cargo by road. The first part of this thesis defines elementary and theoretical terms that help readers understand this work. In the second part the chosen enterprise and its core business is introduced. This is followed by the enterprise analysis, and actual process mapping, based on author's long-term monitoring in a combination with interviews with process users and owners. The optimalization goal was a process adjustment to the state which maximalize company resources while removing found deficiencies.

Cold-Formed Steel Bolted Connections without Washers on Oversized and Slotted Holes

Sheerah, Ibraheem 05 1900 (has links)
The use of the cold-formed steel sheet bolted connections without washers is so significant; however, the North American Specifications for the Design of Cold Formed Steel Structural Members, NASPEC, doesn't provide provisions for such connections. The bearing failure of sheet and the shear failure of sheet were considered in this study. For the sheet shear strength, it was found that the NASPEC (2007) design provisions can be used for oversized holes in both single and double shear configurations and for the double shear connections on short slotted holes. For the sheet bearing strength, a new design method was proposed to be used for low and high ductile steel sheets. The method was compared with the NASPEC and the University of Waterloo approach. Washers were still required for single shear connections on short slotted holes. Besides, connections using ASTM A325 bolts yielded higher bearing strength than connections using ASTM A307 bolts.

Cold-Formed Steel Bolted Connections Using Oversized and Slotted Holes without Washers

Xu, Ke 08 1900 (has links)
In cold-formed steel (CFS) construction, bolted connections without washers for either oversized or slotted holes may significantly expedite the installation process and lower the cost. However, the North American Specification (AISI S100, 2007) for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members requires washers to be installed in bolted connections with oversized or slotted holes. A research project (Phase 1) sponsored by American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) was recently completed at the University of North Texas (UNT) that investigated the performance and strength of bolted CFS connections with oversized and slotted holes without using washers. The research presented in this thesis is the Phase 2 project in which the bolted CFS connections were studied in a broader respect in terms of the failure mechanism, the material thickness, and the hole configurations. Single shear and double shear connections without washers using oversized holes, oversized combined with standard or slotted holes were experimentally examined. Combined with Phase 1 results, the Phase 2 gives a comprehensive evaluation of the behavior and strength of bolted CFS connections with oversized and slotted holes without using washers. Revisions to the existing AISI North American Specification requirements for bolted connections are proposed to account for the reduction in the connection strength caused by the oversized and slotted hole configurations without washers. Specific LRFD and LSD resistance factors and ASD safety factors for different hole configurations in terms of the new proposed methods were presented.

Case Study on Residential Humidity Control at U.S. Coast Guard Bayamon Housing

Meneses, Ivan R. 21 November 2004 (has links)
The intention of this study is to investigate the main source of unacceptable humidity levels at the U.S. Coast Guard Housing located in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The aim of this research is to use a systematic approach to resolve the humidity and mold issues by testing the least expensive solutions first. This study involves the recording of indoor air quality conditions for six months as an analysis tool to investigate current air conditions and to document how physical changes to the air conditioning units will affect the resulting air conditions. This research will investigate and implement different approaches geared to solving the high humidity issues. Some of the most relevant changes that will be tested are the installation of heat pipe technology, the addition of fresh air to existing air conditioning units to create positive pressure, and the review of the space load design of currently installed air conditioning units to determine if the units were over-designed. In addition, this study will verify the relationship between energy-saving thermostats and high humidity, determine any connection between roof leaks and high humidity indoors, and determine the estimated cost to the Coast Guard to implement the recommended changes.
