Conservation of Severely Damaged Paper Using Passivation Polymers

Eilert, Eloise 2011 August 1900 (has links)
This work examined the use of passivation polymers in the conservation of severely damaged paper. It specifically investigated the use of this functional polymer treatment to address the issues of damage to paper caused by waterlogging, mold, and internal acidity. Several experiments were designed and conducted to examine the effects of the polymers in the conservation of papers compromised by these conditions. Paper artifacts from the Bonfire Memorabilia Collection were selected and conserved using treatment protocols that included the use of the passivation polymers. The conservation of some of the damaged papers from this culturally important site demonstrated the effectiveness of the polymer treatment in real-world conservation situations. This dissertation established that the use of passivation polymers adds strength and stability to severely damaged paper.

Internship in paper conservation at the Australian Archives A.C.T., 1981-1982

Rome, Daraka, n/a January 1982 (has links)
The Australian Archives A.C.T. Conservation Laboratory performs various tasks relating to the preservation program. The two streams of work - Treatment of Materials and Laboratory Services are considered to be of equal importance. The first deals with the actual treatment of items in the collection while the latter concerns preventive conservation, During the period of my internship I have carried out most of the Laboratory Services which I will discuss in this dissertation with the exception of Disaster Planning. I was also involved in the treatment of various objects from the Australian Archives collection as well as from other government agencies, completed with written and photographic documentation. One of the projects, taking several months of treatment, was a series of old letter books containing letters from the Administrator in Sydney to the Chief Magistrate of Norfolk Island. This project, along with the conservation of some other government records, demonstrates the difference between archival conservation and conservation of other art and cultural objects. Attendances at technical seminars and conferences are also discussed.

An internship in the conservation of paper

Seager, Christopher Philipp, n/a January 1983 (has links)
This dissertation is an account of an internship in paper conservation undertaken at the Auckland City Art Gallery during the period July 1982 to March 1983. It opens with a description of the organisation and functions of the gallery, with particular reference to its management, staffing, financing, displays and acquisition procedures. This is followed, in Part 2, by a general account of the conservation department, its history, staffing, laboratory and tasks. Part 3 details all the conservation work undertaken during the period of internship. It describes the various techniques and procedures employed and the results achieved or observed. It contains a list of 119 objects treated followed by 26 case studies to illustrate the problems encountered and the action taken. It also includes a list of the equipment and materials used. Set out in Part 4 are details of conservation laboratories visited in Wellington. Part 5, after a brief description of conservation services in Christchurch and Dunedin, details the activities of the Interim Committee for the Conservation of Cultural Property and the principal recommendations contained in a report submitted by Dr Nathan Stolow, a conservation consultant engaged by the Interim Committee. This is followed by a report on the New Zealand Conservators' Meeting which took place in Wellington in March 1983.

Internship in paper conservation at the National Library of Australia, Canberra, 1983-1984

Smith, Wendy, n/a January 1984 (has links)
This dissertation describes the work carried out by me in the Preservation Services Branch of the National Library of Australia during the period 1983 to early 1984. Conservation activities at the Library are organised in three broad categories, with the following goals: . preparation for exhibitions . ongoing full conservation of the Library collections, in a staged process . methods development and materials investigation. The internship program was devised to allow time to be spent in each of these three areas. The amount of time spent in each area roughly reflected the allocation of conservation staff resources to each section at that time. In the exhibitions program, objects were prepared for display at the National Gallery of Australia. These included watercolours and hand-coloured prints. Under the ongoing conservation program, a wide range of paper objects were treated. Objects from the Library's Special Collections are treated in order of priority determined by Librarian staff. Works treated included newspapers, both bound and unbound, movie posters, and magazines. Work in the third area involved both routine testing method's of conservation materials, involvement in a phase preservation project, and investigations into new methods of preventive conservation.

Dicionário ilustrado de conservação de documentos gráficos / Conservation of Graphic Document: An Illustrated Dictionary

Barbosa, Alessandra Andrade França 11 December 2017 (has links)
The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the theoretical and methodological principles of Conservation through the elaboration of a terminology work, here conceived as a technical dictionary. By creating an illustrated dictionary of Conservation of graphic documents, it intends to disseminate specific scientific knowledge, helping to standardize the language used by professionals in the field and, thus, minimize the ambiguity regarding specialized terms. It is this dictionarys aim to encompass large theme clusters, reaching specialists as well as professionals in associated areas. The consolidation of specialized vocabulary is a premise for epistemological understanding, since the definition of scientific/technical terms used by professionals leads to the development of consistent bodies of scientific knowledge and, ultimately, strengthens fields of study as a whole.

Fritoli, Clara Landim 26 October 2012 (has links)
In this study, paper samples were produced and naturally exposed to varying temperature and humidity conditions at two university libraries, located in Curitiba (910m a.m.s.l.) and in Caiobá, on the coast of Paraná state. The paper samples were produced with unloaded long-and short-fiber cellulose, without adhesives, in order to facilitate the analysis of the relationship between sample decay rate and natural ageing conditions at both libraries, relative to outdoors. The purpose of the research was to identify which climatic context presents the highest paper preservation potential, by means of the preventive conservation indices PI and TWPI (Preservation Index and the Time Weighted Preservation Index), which quantify the effects of temperature and humidity on paper life expectancy. The samples were placed in naturally ventilated acrylic containers covered with UV film, whose openings were protected with activated charcoal so that temperature and humidity had the major effects on the paper samples. For outdoors, Stevenson screens were used, wherein the acrylic containers were placed. Climatic data were recorded with data loggers and the paper samples were tested with regard to physical and chemical properties before and after a 12and 24 months natural exposure. Results indicate the largest decay rates for the samples with the shortest life expectancy according to PI/TWPI (obtained from ambient temperature and relative humidity) estimates. / 5000
