Energy efficiency improvements of Mondi Dynäs paper mill : A survey of steam and condensate with improvement measures for increased condensate recovery

Hussein, Gadar January 2014 (has links)
This thesis has been performed at Mondi kraft pulp and paper mill located in Sweden, Kramfors Dynäs due to the low return rate of condensate. Currently, the return rate is only at 65 - 75 %. This is problematic as the demineralization process is operating on full capacity and thus requires a reduced make-up water need. The production of demineralized water is an expensive process due to large requirements of chemicals and pump-energy, but also due to the cost of raw water and maintenance. Therefore the purpose of the work was to investigate the possibility to increase the condensate return rate and thus reduce the need of make-up water. The investigation was performed during normal production rates to simplify the interpretations. The steam and condensate system was mapped and extracted flows were identified, measured and marked on map. The extracted flows were investigated in more detail and characterized as either consumed in a process or lost to sewer or atmosphere. In the work, both minor and major improvements were investigated. Minor improvements are accomplished with small intervention measures and could be done with small or no investments costs. Major improvements require large investments costs and further investigations. Six different processes were found to constitute the total production of make-up water. These are the free blowing of excess steam, soot blowing steam, paper machine 6, de-aerating process in the feed water tanks, digester process and steam- & condensate leaks along the pipe network. Improvements with the category of minor were found to reduce steam and condensate consumption by 22 - 23 ton/h. This implies a reduction by 30 - 32 % of the added make-up water, including an annual financial benefit of 3,3 - 3,9 MSEK. Additionally 0,41 - 0,82 MSEK could be gained annually by improving the insulation on the cylinder dryer heads. The make-up water would be further reduced if insulation jackets and inspection programs were implemented on equipments along the steam lines. Two major improvements are recommended. The first major improvement involves elimination of the free blowing of excess steam. This could be accomplished by drying the bark before combustion. The added make-up water would be reduced by 25 % and with the possibility to sell the dried bark during low steam production. The second major improvement involves the digester process, where the consumptions of medium pressure steam could be reduced by replacing steam with liquor-steam from the strong liquor accumulator. Medium pressure steam could instead be converted into electricity by the turbine.

UV pretreatment of Alkaline Bleaching Wastewater from a Kraft Pulp and Paper Mill prior to Anaerobic Digestion in a Lab scale UASB Reactor

Karlsson, Marielle January 2013 (has links)
The effects of UV pretreatment on alkaline bleaching (EOP) wastewater from a kraft pulp and paper mill were investigated prior to anaerobic digestion (AD) in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. The aim was to enhance the methane production, increase the reduction of total organic carbon (TOC) and determine the best UV exposure time. The exposure time of 2.6 minutes partially degraded the organic material in the EOP wastewater since it generated higher biogas and methane production than the reference period, while it also increased the reductions of solved chemical oxygen demand (CODsol) and TOCsol. The exposure time of 16 minutes, on the other hand, did not show any significant improvement regarding increased biogas and methane production nor did it increase the reduction of CODsol. However, it did increase the reduction of TOCsol, but not to the same extent as the exposure time of 2.6 minutes. The presence of unwanted microbial growth in the system during the experiment might have affected the effectiveness of the UV pretreatment more during the exposure time of 16 minutes as the amount of growth was more substantial during this period of time. Furthermore, no optimal exposure time could be determined due to lack of time.

Caracterização de resíduos de indústria de papel para utilização como material geotécnico / Characterization of paper mill sludge for utilization as geotechnical material

Ibeiro, Lidiane da Silva January 2007 (has links)
Following the line of research of new geotechnical materials, aiming new technical solutions using alternative materials, the present research evaluated, under geotechnical understanding, the behavior of the waste sludge from a paper recycling plant in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The objective of this research aimed the characterization and the identification of the waste properties – mechanical and hydraulic performance, through laboratory tests. The natural waste has 256% of water content, and is composed by organic matter (ranging from 40 to 45 %), mineral charges (mainly Kaolinite and Calcite) and water. The tests for the determination of deformability, strength and hydraulic conductivity parameters were carried out under 190%, 160% and 130 % of water content. The one-dimensional compressibility parameters of the waste sludge did not show a significant variability with the variation of the molding water content, where the average values were high for the compression (Cc) and swelling (Cd) coefficients as well as for the consolidation coefficient (Cv), which can be considered as an indicative of high compressibility (characteristic of the material). For the determination of the strength parameters of the material, it was carried out undrained triaxial tests. The internal friction angle was ф’= 53,5°. During the triaxial tests, measurements of hydraulic conductivity were performed, previously shearing. The hydraulic conductivity coefficients measured during the pre-shearing phase, reached values around 10-9 m/s. The capacity for reaching low values of hydraulic conductivity is a considerable characteristic of the behavior of this material, what shows the possibility of its use as an alternative geotechnical material substituting the conventional materials used as cover liners

Devenir de l’arsenic dans une papeterie : étude de cas / Arsenic fate in a pulp and paper mill : a case study

Michon, Clémence 04 February 2011 (has links)
Un traitement tertiaire par coagulation (par des sels d’aluminium) / floculation / flottation permet de diminuer encore la concentration en arsenic dans le rejet en fonction des conditions de fonctionnement / This study was about the sources and the fate of arsenic in a pulp and paper mill located in the Vosges, and particularly in the wastewater treatment plant, in order to understand the variations of the arsenic concentration in the treated effluent discharged in the Moselle River. The recovered papers used for the production of deinked pulp are the main source of arsenic for the pulp and paper mill, followed by the solid fuels incinerated in the boiler of the energy area of the mill. The main outputs are the ashes produced by the boiler, then the produced paper. The fate of the arsenic in the deinking process is complex and involves transfer phenomena between the pulp and the white water of the process. Arsenic present in white water could come from the suspended solids. Malfunctions in the energy area have caused the departure of ashes to the wastewater treatment plant via the washing water of the flue gas washer. Those ashes may contain a high arsenic concentration and could be one of the sources of the large variations of the arsenic concentration in the effluent of the wastewater treatment plant. This wastewater treatment plant is able to eliminate up to 50% of arsenic of the effluent thanks to neutralization/decantation and biotreatment by activated sludge. A tertiary treatment by coagulation (with aluminum salts) / flocculation / flotation permits to decrease the arsenic concentration in the effluent according to the operating conditions

The identification of prevalent bacterial isolates and characterisation of microbial communities in paper-mill water systems

Du Toit, Rene-Marie 27 June 2008 (has links)
Water is a scarce and unevenly distributed national resource and it is, therefore, important to reduce water consumption in paper mills. Closure of water systems for reuse, however, directly and indirectly results in an increase in the numbers and types of microorganisms resulting in poor runnability, lower production rates and increased safety hazards. The aim of this study was to investigate the microbiology of paper-mill water systems in South Africa to aid in closure of water systems whilst controlling microbial fouling. Different environmental parameters monitored at paper mills were reviewed together with microbial enumeration techniques employed by industry and characterisation and identification methods to study bacteria. Various environmental and process parameters could play an important role in the number and type of microorganisms in a paper-mill water system. The highest correlation between an environmental parameter and biological activity was found for oxidation-reduction potential and the numbers of culturable aerobic bacteria. Other environmental parameters that significantly influenced microbial numbers were temperature, dissolved oxygen, dissolved solids, chemical oxygen demand, nitrogen, phosphorous, specific water consumption, pulp furnish, biocide class and retention time. The characterisation and identification of problematic bacteria in paper mills could enable better control since the correct biocides could be applied to minimise microbiologically associated problems. Prevalent bacteria that were isolated from the water systems of 14 paper machines were typed into 35 distinct groups using ERIC-PCR and PCR-RFLP and identified with sequence analysis. Eleven of the 35 types were identified to species level, 20 types were identified to genus level and the remaining four types were identified to family level. It was found that the majority of bacteria belonged to the genera Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas that contain well-known slime-forming bacterial species. Traditional methods employed to investigate bacteria in industrial water systems often do not accurately represent the composition and diversity of bacterial communities. DGGE analysis could provide a powerful tool for monitoring bacterial diversity, since it is able to discriminate between identical sizes of PCR-amplified DNA fragments that differ in their sequence content. The use of DGGE to monitor changes in microbial populations could improve control of microbial fouling, but more analyses would be needed to validate the results of the present study. / Dissertation (MSc (Microbiology))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Microbiology and Plant Pathology / unrestricted

Integrating membrane filtration forwater reuse in tissue mill

Moslehi, Ehsan January 2018 (has links)
Water is an essential and indispensable component is the pulp- and paper production industry. The increase in energy costs, stricter environmental regulations and water resource shortageshave caused a reduction of the water footprint in the industry as well as an increase in waterrecycling and water circuit closure. Reducing water usage requires an understanding of wherecontaminants originate, as well as which streams are critical to the process and how they impactmill operation. The recirculation of water can cause contaminant accumulation; therefore millsemploy technologies for water treatment in the internal water cycles, the so-called ‘kidneys’.Application of membrane technology is one such option which can improve the recycled waterquality and reduce contaminant buildup. The present study was carried out on a lab-scale for the treatment of a tissue mill effluent usingmembrane separation. A combination of pretreatment methods and various membranes werecompared with regards to separation, flux and fouling. The AlfaLaval M20 device was to treatwastewater samples sent from the mill, where the permeate was recirculated to the feed tank.COD and TOC levels are compared with regards to determining the separation efficiency. Thepermeate flux was measured over the two-hour filtration period, as well as flux recovery todetermine fouling levels. Additionally, some economic aspects of the process are discussed. This study suggests the potential application of a combination of flocculation or centrifugationpretreatment, with reverse osmosis membranes for recycling water to replace freshwater intake. The results also indicate the possibility of using ultrafiltration as kidneys to decreasecontamination buildup for further water loop closure.

Application of Ozone in Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) for Enhanced Removal of TOC and Suspended Solids in Pulp and Paper Wastewaters

Brown, Amy Patricia January 2016 (has links)
Pulp and paper mills are one of the top consumers of water related to industrial manufacturing, which ultimately leads to a large volume of heavily contaminated wastewater. This discharged effluent can have a harmful effect on the receiving aquatic environment and cause further ramifications downstream. Thus, a technically feasible and cost effective treatment solution for safe release from the mill is essential. Dissolved air flotation (DAF) has many applications and involves the formation of air microbubbles triggered by a drop to atmospheric pressure. When introduced into the wastewater, these microbubbles attach to the floc particles present and float to the surface. Another water treatment technology is ozone, a powerful oxidant, and has been widely used in water and wastewater treatment over recent decades, including color reduction in pulp and paper mill wastewater treatment. This thesis studied the effect pre-ozonation has on the DAF process in treating pulp and paper mill secondary effluent. Wastewaters from three mills with different initial water quality parameters were used, especially chemical oxygen demand (COD), turbidity, and color. The most suitable coagulant and coagulant aid, aluminum chlorohydrate and cationic polymer NS 4700P respectively, were selected, and an effective bench-scale experimental procedure was established. Pre-ozonation did not reduce the need for coagulant due to little change in the overall COD, color, or turbidity removal. However, ozonation did reduce color before coagulation, and the ultimate target removal of COD to 90 ppm was met with the conditions chosen. / Environmental Engineering

Étude de l'épuration d'effluents de composition complexe par électrocoagulation et des couplages intervenants entre le traitement électrochimique et l'étape de séparation : application à l'industrie textile et papetière / Study of the sewage of a complex composition effluent by electrocoagulation and the coupled between the electrochemical treatment and the separation step : application to the textile and paper industries

Zodi, Salim 22 March 2012 (has links)
However, little work has been undertaken to investigate more thoroughly its behaviors. The complexity of the effluent for which it is particularly interesting to use this method also makes it difficult to analyze the results. This thesis aims to contribute to understanding the coupling electrocoagulation - settling and interactions associated with complex effluent multi-pollutants. Also a continuous reactor has been addressed in the case of a simple synthetic sewage to better understand the differences from the batch operation. This study is based on a systematic approach based on the elementary processes of electrocoagulation: Electrochemistry, coagulation and physical separation. Each process provides a basis for studying the interactions that then the overall modeling process. To study the electro-decantation couplings, industrial textile effluents were treated by electrocoagulation followed by a settling step, without flocculent. The effect of parameters on electrocoagulation settleability of treated effluent and removal efficiency of pollution has been studied in particular by following the settling velocity in the test tube and calculating the SVI. The second objective of this our work was to study the coupling between the different types of pollution and to eliminate a particular paper mill effluent containing organic pollutants and arsenic. Finally, we conducted a study on the performance of EC-coupling settling for the treatment of a synthetic textile effluent flow reactor. The latter is composed of two elements, the electrochemical cell followed by a settling chamber
