Authoritative Mothers Exhibit More Permissive Feeding Practices Eating Away from Home with their ChildrenKasparian, Michelle Marie 25 July 2012 (has links)
Eating away from home has been identified as one possible contributor to childhood obesity, with links to poor diet quality and higher weight status due to dietary quality of meals at restaurants and consumers' attitudes. Parenting style has been associated with children's weight status and overall attitudes toward food, with authoritative parenting being shown to help protect against childhood obesity. The current study aimed to compare and contrast parenting and feeding practices at home and in the restaurant. Twenty-five mothers with children, ages five to eight, who ate at restaurants at least two times per week participated in facilitated, individual interviews. Interviews topics included: parenting, child input in choosing restaurants and restaurant meal selection, and food rules and practices at restaurants versus at home. Socio-demographic information, parenting style, and the mothers' heights and weights were gathered, with descriptive statistics computed. Interview data were transcribed, then thematically coded using NVivo software. All mothers scored highest on authoritative parenting styles. Participating mothers were Caucasian, well-educated, with above-average family incomes. Mothers had an average of 2.2 children and a BMI of 27.9 kg/m². Mothers described more stringent behavioral expectations and more permissive food rules at restaurants. Parents had greater influence in determining whether to eat away from home and where, whereas children had greater responsibility for meal selections at restaurants. The results suggest that practices may differ at restaurants than at home, highlighting the importance of further research, along with educational and behavioral strategies directed toward mothers when eating away from home. / Master of Science

Parenting style and first year students’ adjustment at university : mediation via trait emotional intelligence in higher education institutions– a dimensional and typological approachTarekegn, Desalegn Fenta 04 1900 (has links)
The primary purpose of this study was to examine the potential mediating effect of TEI on the relationship between parenting style/dimension and first year students’ university adjustment in higher education institutions of Ethiopia. The study sought to test a model where parental responsiveness, parental demandingness and the TEI interactively and individually, relate to adjustment. A total of 464 first year university students from three public universities participated in this study. The results of preliminary analyses pertaining to the predominantly practiced parenting style in the families of Ethiopia revealed that if gender is ignored, the most common parenting style is the neglectful style followed very closely by the authoritative style. However, parenting styles varied as a function of students’ gender. A statistically significant TEI score difference was found among the four parenting style categories. Results also revealed that a statistically significant difference on adjustment mean score was found among the four parenting style categories. The t-test result revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between male and female first year university students with regard to TEI score but there was no a statistically significant difference between male and female first year university students with respect to the adjustment score. The path analysis result also revealed that parental dimensions (responsiveness and demandingness) and TEI had a statistically significant and positive direct effect on adjustment. The multiple regression result showed that TEI, parental responsiveness and parental demandingness interactively explained 31.9 percent of the variance on adjustment. Finally, the mediation analysis results revealed that TEI plays a meditation role, but only partially, in the parental demandingness and adjustment relationship, and in the parental responsiveness and adjustment relationship, which potentially confirms that the adjustment scale can explain the relationship between the demandingness and responsiveness dimension-variables of parenting style and TEI. Based on the results of the present study, some practical, theoretical and methodological implications of the study for designing interventions to maximize students’ adjustment in higher education institutions are addressed. Moreover, recommendations, limitations and future directions are addressed for researchers to take lesson in undertaking this or similar types of research in the future. / Psychology / D. Phil. Harris / The present study examined adolescents’ perceptions of their caregivers’ parenting style as well as their physical activity participation, motivation, and attitudes. High school students completed questionnaires regarding their physical activity participation, motivation, and attitudes, and they assessed both their male and female caregivers’ parenting style. Results indicated that for males, a permissive parenting style was related to more physical activity participation and that males favor physical activity that features long and hard training and as a way to stay healthy and fit. An authoritative parenting style was related to higher rates of physical activity for females, and their attitudes focused on social aspects of physical activity as well as a release of tension. For both genders, identified regulation was associated with higher rates of physical activity, indicating that higher levels of self-determined motivation are important for promoting active behaviors. Cross-gender relationships between caregiver and child emerged and social and gender norms seemed to influence parenting style and attitudes specific to gender. Additional results and implications are discussed.

This research project explores the increasingly popular phenomena of companies striving to harmonize and align their business which is called a “One Company”-vision. The project is carried out on behalf of the global IT and management consultancy company, Logica. It is a case study at Saab AB, the Swedish aerospace-and defense-company, regarding corporate strategy. In this research project, the concept of parenting style is related as one important ingredient of One Company and it is considered to be the starting point for implementation of strategy. Implementation of strategy is further illustrated with the help of a tentative model. This model puts strategy in the center of the organization and then intends to align the whole company through strategic congruence and integrated control in order to implement the chosen strategy. If the whole organization is not committed, it will be very difficult to complete the journey to become One Company. The purpose of this research project is to develop a perspective of a One Company concept and to investigate the implementation of this concept at Saab AB. To further explain the purpose and to deepen the understanding of the One Company concept, the following research questions have been addressed: How does Saab AB, a large Swedish multi-business organization, strive to become One Company? What are (if any) the critical success factors in Saab’s journey to become One Saab? What are (if any) the areas of improvement for Saab, according to the developed perspective of the One Company concept? In order to accomplish the purpose, interviews have been performed with corporate level management. Moreover, gaps have been filled with empirical findings from a dissertation that investigated Saab’s competitive advantage in relation to strategic congruence and integrated control. The results show that for Saab AB, the One Company vision started as a market initiative to create a common brand for what used to be a conglomerate. The One Saab strategy has led to many changes for Saab AB, regarding organizational structure, work methods and follow-up processes. It has affected all business areas and all functions. Human Resource and Finance are functions that have already been harmonized. Current changes concern consolidation of IT and implementation of a global management system. The global management system was launched this year (2011) and it will lead to many more changes within the company before it is fully implemented. This system will help bring the company closer to become One Saab. The conclusion is that Saab AB has come a long way but today it is a synergic corporation and not yet One Company, as the concept is described in this thesis.

This study aimed at determining the prevalence rate of bullying and victimization among middle school students and investigating the role of locus of control, self-esteem, parenting style, loneliness, and academic achievement in predicting participation in bullying and victimization. The sample consisted of 742 participants recruited from 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.
Results revealed that of the total 742 students: 4.6 % of the students were bullies, 21.3 % were victims, 6.5 % were bully/victims, 44.7% were pure not involved and 22.9 % were not involved. Regarding the types of bullying, the most common bullying behavior used by the bullies and experienced by the victims was verbal bullying.
When gender and grade level were investigated in relation to bullying, meaningful gender differences were found. However, no significant grade level differences were found.
The binary logistic regression analysis indicated that / female students who involved in bullying had low acceptance/involvement and academic achievement scores, but higher loneliness and psychological autonomy scores. Furthermore, male involved students had external locus of control, higher self-esteem, and loneliness scores, and lower strictness/supervision scores. Logistic regression analysis also revealed external locus of control and higher loneliness scores / but lower acceptance/involvement and academic achievement scores among the victim group.

Pastaraisiais metais vis daugiau susirūpinimą kelia prastėjanti merginų sveikta (Forbes ir kt., 2004), o nepasitenkinimas kūnu siejamas su neigiama fizine ir psichine sveikata bei rizikingu elgesiu (dietos naudojimas, badavimas ir kt.), kuris susijęs su valgymo sutrikimų vystimusi, žema saviverte, depresija, savęs žalojimu ir net savižudybėmis. Darbo tikslas - ištirti merginų ir jų motinų tarpusavio santykių sąsajas su nepasitenkinimu kūnu bei motinų naudojamu auklėjimo stiliumi.
Tiriamųjų kontingentas ir tyrimo metodai. Tyrime dalyvavo 259 II – IV klasių Zarasų bei Utenos miestų gimnazijų moksleivės bei 259 mergaičių motinos. Atliekant tyrimą, naudotos šios metodikos: kūno formos klausimynas (BSQ), pasitenkinimo kūno dalimis klausimynas (BSS), figūros vertinimo skalė (FRS), požiūrio į santykius su motina skalė (CAM), vaikų auklėjimo stiliaus klausimynas (PSDQ).
Tyrimo rezultatai parodė, kad motinų nepasitenkinimas savo kūno dalimis yra susijęs su dukrų nepasitenkinimu savo kūnu, o mergaitės, kurios santykius su motina vertina blogiau yra labiau nepatenkintos savo kūnu, nei mergaitės, kurios santykius vertina geriau. Statistiškai reikšmingų skirtumų tarp motinų nepatenkinimo savo kūnu ir dukros, santykių su motina problemiškumo vertinimo nerasta. Motinos, labiau naudojančios autoritarinį auklėjimo stilių yra labiau nepasitenkinusios savo kūno išvaizda nei motinos, naudojančios mažiau autoritarinį auklėjimo stilių. [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / In recent years, more and more concerned about the worsening girls health (Forbes ir kt., 2004), and body dissatisfaction is associated with negative physical and mental health and risky behavior (the use of diet, fasting, etc.) which is connected with the development eating disorders, low self-esteem, depression, self-mutilation and even suicide. The aim - to explore girls and their mothers relationship connection to interfaces with body dissatisfaction and mother usable educational style.
Subjects and methods. The study included 259 girls of II – IV gymnasium classes in Zarasai anr Utena and 259 girls' mother. The study used this technique: the body shape questionnaire (BSQ), satisfaction body questionnaire (BSS), the figure rating scale (FRS), Child's attitude toward mother scale (CAM), The Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ).
The results showed that mothers' body parts dissatisfaction is associated with daughter’s body parts dissatisfaction, and girls whose relationship with her mother is worse are more dissatisfied with their bodies, than girls who have beter relationship. Statistically significant differences between mothers bodys dissatisfaction and daughters, relationships with her mother problematic assessment was not found. Mothers who more use an authoritarian parentng style are more disatisfied with appearance than mothers who use less an authoritarian parentng style. 本研究旨在探討父母教養方式與青少年行為困擾之現況,並編製一份適合國內國中、高中生的「子女知覺父母教養方式量表」。藉由調查前訪談確定背景變項為性別、家庭社經地位及父母婚姻關係,並由量表的施測資料探討此三種背景變項在父母教養方式及行為困擾上之差異。再利用量表的施測及調查後訪談,進一步了解國中、高中生的父母教養方式與行為困擾之關係。
本研究以617名國中、高中學生做為預試對象,經由預試、統計分析結果、選題等步驟,編製而成「子女知覺父母教養方式量表」。再利用分層叢集抽樣方法抽取台灣北、中、南、東四區共1130名國中、高中生為研究樣本,以自編的「子女知覺父母教養方式量表」、林家屏所編「青少年行為困擾量表」與李閏華所編「知覺父母婚姻關係量表」為研究工具。利用Hotelling T2、one-way MANOVA、multiple regression、one-way repeated measure ANOVA、Canonical Correlation等方法進行統計分析,並獲得以下結論:
一、男、女生在知覺父親教養方式上有顯著差異。
二、男、女生在知覺母親教養方式上有顯著差異。
三、男、女生在行為困擾上有顯著差異。
四、三組家庭社經地位之青少年在知覺父親教養方式上有顯著差異。
五、三組家庭社經地位之青少年在知覺母親教養方式上有顯著差異。
六、三組家庭社經地位之青少年在行為困擾上無顯著差異。
七、父母婚姻關係可以預測青少年知覺的父親教養方式,尤以對開明自主之預測力為最大,其他依序為忽視敵意、疏於管教、溺愛保護、嚴格專制及寬鬆容忍。
八、父母婚姻關係可以預測青少年知覺的母親教養方式,尤以對開明自主之預測力為最大,其他依序為忽視敵意、疏於管教、溺愛保護、嚴格專制及寬鬆容忍。
九、父母婚姻關係可以預測青少年的行為困擾,尤以對家庭生活困擾之預測力為最大,其他依序為人際關係困擾、自我關懷困擾、身心發展困擾及學校生活困擾。

本研究依據研究結果進行討論,並提出親職教育、教學與輔導及未來研究上之建議。 / The purposes of this study were to investigate the status quo of parenting style and adolescents’ behavior disturbance, and to develop a Perception of Parenting Style Scale (PPSS) for adolescents. Before surveying, an interview was conducted in order to confirm the background variables of gender, social economic status of family and parents’ marital relationship. And subsequently the PPSS was employed to ascertain the different impacts of the three variables on parenting style and adolescents’ behavior disturbance. An interview was also conducted after the survey. Lastly, the results of the survey and the interview were used to acquire a further understanding of the relation of parenting style and adolescents’ behavior disturbance.
617 junior and senior high school students participated in the pilot test and the PPSS was developed from the data of the pilot test. There were 1130 high school students involved in the present study (stratify sampling was used to select the subjects from northern, western, southern, and eastern Taiwan). The instruments comprise of Perception of Parenting Style Scale, Adolescents’ Behavior-problem Scale and Parents’ Marital Relationship Scale. The statistical methods used to analyze the data were Hotelling T2, one-way MANOVA, multiple regression, one-way repeated measure ANOVA and Canonical Correlation.
The conclusions of this study were summarized as follows:
1.Male and female students had significant differences on perception of father’s parenting style.
2.Male and female students had significant differences on perception of mother’s parenting style.
3.Male and female students had significant differences on behavior disturbance.
4.Adolescents among 3 groups of social economic status of family had significant differences on perceiving father’s parenting style.
5.Adolescents among 3 groups of social economic status of family had significant differences on perceiving mother’s parenting style.
6.Adolescents among 3 groups of social economic status of family had no significant differences on behavior disturbance.
7.Parents’ marital relationship could be used to predict adolescents’ perception of father’s parenting style. The prediction to democracy is the highest, then neglecting hostility, nonintervention, indulgence, authoritarian and tolerance in order.
8.Parents’ marital relationship could be used to predict adolescents’ perception of mother’s parenting style. The prediction to democracy is the highest, then neglecting hostility, nonintervention, indulgence, authoritarian and tolerance in order.
9.Parents’ marital relationship could be used to predict adolescents’ behavior disturbance. This master's these is considering the relationship between achievement goals and parenting styles. In the theoretic part of the thesis there are described current findings in the area of development individual achievement goals until adolescence from the viewpoint of social cognitive theory and the role of parents in this process. Research is aimed at establishing working model of the PALS questionnaire in Czech Republic and relationship of achievement goals and family parenting styles in students of 7th , 8th and 9th grade of mainly Prague elementary schools. Results show the need to modify PALS questionnaire in the manner that would better reflect the difference between performance- approach and performance-avoidance goals.
