Empowerment : exploring the lived experience of renters' rights group embers

Kampman, Lilly-Ann R. 03 July 2007
Although the term empowerment is frequently and broadly used across disciplines, the meaning of the term is often ambiguous. The purpose of this qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological study was to explore the lived experience of individual members of Renters' Rights Group (RRG), a community development group focused on promoting safe and affordable housing, thereby creating a better understanding of the phenomenon of empowerment. The seven study participants, four males and three females, five of whom were Aboriginal, had been active members of RRG for two years or more. The theoretical framework for this study was Parse's Theory of Human Becoming. Four core concepts were identified as contributing to participants' sense of empowerment: connecting, struggling, contributing, and changing. The findings from this study can be used by nurses and other professionals who work with marginalized individuals or groups. Incorporation of Parse's Human Becoming Theory into practice, education, and research, may facilitate the reflection of caring upon which nursing is founded.

Feeling unsure: a lived experience of humanbecoming

Maillard Struby, Francoise, maillard@webster.ch January 2010 (has links)
The aim of this study was to explore the phenomenon of feeling unsure as viewed from the humanbecoming school of thought. From the humanbecoming perspective feeling unsure is a universal lived experience of health and quality of life. The purposes of this study were to understand the lived experience of feeling unsure from the humanbecoming perspective, to enhance understanding of the lived experience of feeling unsure as an essence of health and quality of life, to discover the structure of the lived experience of feeling unsure, to add to the body of knowledge on the phenomenon of feeling unsure, and to contribute to expand the theory of humanbecoming. The Parse research methodology was used to guide this study and answer the question: Whqt is the structure of the lived experience of feeling unsure? Ten persons living in community accepted to participate in this study. The processes of dialogical engagement, extraction-synthesis, and heuristic interpretation we re used for data gathering and analysis. The central finding of this study is Feeling unsure is wavering irresolutely with discerning ponderings arising in venturing with trepidations, while revering alliances. The findings of this study emerged as new knowledge that extend the theory of humanbecoming and enhance the understanding of the lived experience of feeling unsure.

PATIENTENS ÅTERHÄMTNING : Miljöns betydelse ur ett patientperspektiv

Grabmüller, Anna, Lindström, Ella January 2020 (has links)
Background: Previous research shows that there are several factors that affect the patient recovery from illness, where the environment is a relevant factor. In the environment, there are various conditions that affect the patient environment. The nurse feels that the design, light, sound of the room and relationships can affect the patient recovery. The nurse experiences may part from the patient. Aim: To describe the patient experience of the meaning of environment for recovery. Method: A qualitative literature study with an inductive approach. Result: The result was generated in two themes and four subthemes based on the purpose of the degree project. The theme Relationship's significance for recovery was divided into two subthemes; Patient relationship with the nurse and Support from others. The second theme The importance of the external environment for recovery was divided into two sub-themes; The patient room and Return home to everyday life. Conclusion: The nurse and patient have similar experiences of the factors in the environment's mening for recovery, it can have a promoting or inhibitory effect on the recovery. An environment that provides security and affirmation was perceived to be conducive to recovery. The relationship with the nurse and others can help the patient to find power for recovery.

Magnetic Resonance Parameter Assessment from a Second Order Time-Dependent Linear Model

January 2019 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation develops a second order accurate approximation to the magnetic resonance (MR) signal model used in the PARSE (Parameter Assessment by Retrieval from Single Encoding) method to recover information about the reciprocal of the spin-spin relaxation time function (R2*) and frequency offset function (w) in addition to the typical steady-state transverse magnetization (M) from single-shot magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Sparse regularization on an approximation to the edge map is used to solve the associated inverse problem. Several studies are carried out for both one- and two-dimensional test problems, including comparisons to the first order approximation method, as well as the first order approximation method with joint sparsity across multiple time windows enforced. The second order accurate model provides increased accuracy while reducing the amount of data required to reconstruct an image when compared to piecewise constant in time models. A key component of the proposed technique is the use of fast transforms for the forward evaluation. It is determined that the second order model is capable of providing accurate single-shot MRI reconstructions, but requires an adequate coverage of k-space to do so. Alternative data sampling schemes are investigated in an attempt to improve reconstruction with single-shot data, as current trajectories do not provide ideal k-space coverage for the proposed method. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Mathematics 2019

Sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att möta total smärta i palliativ vård : En litteraturöversikt / Nurses' experiences in meeting total pain in palliative care : A literature review

Ericsson, Anna, Högblom, My January 2015 (has links)
Background: Pain is one of the most common and feared symptoms in palliative care and may cause suffering and reduced quality of life of the dying person. The pain has several different dimensions and is a subjective experience of each individual. How the nurse meets the palliative patient's pain is essential to good health of the patient, which allows a good and worthy death. Aim: The aim was to highlight nurses' experiences in meeting total pain in palliative care. Method: The literature review is based on ten scientific studies of which seven studies with a qualitative approach, a study using quantitative methods and two studies with mixed method. The studies included in the literature review has been reviewed and approved by an ethics committee. Searches were made in the databases MEDLINE and CINAHL Complete full text. Results: The results showed that nurses experienced difficulties to meet patients who experienced total pain. The nurses felt that they had insufficient knowledge and experience in meeting patients with total pain. The nurse worked much with existential conversation. Discussion: Nurses experienced an uncertainty in the face of existential questions, which is a difficult but important part of the work. This is discussed and anchored in Rosemarie Rizzo Parse nursing theory Human becoming along with the concept of caring.

Comparison of Description Length for Text Corpus

Huang, Chung-Hsiang 24 May 2012 (has links)
In this thesis, we compare the description length of different grammars, and extend the research of automatic grammar learning to the grammar production of Stanford parser. In our research before, we have introduced that how to minimize the description length of the grammar which is generated from the Academia Sinica Balanced Corpus. Based on the concept of data compression, the encoding method in our research is effective in reducing the description length of a text corpus. Moreover, we further discussed about the description length of two special cases of context-free grammars: exhaustive and recursive. The exhaustive grammar is that for every distinct sentence in the corpus is derived, and the recursive one covers all strings. In our research of this thesis, we use a parsing tool called "Stanford parser" to parse sentences and generate grammar rules. We also compare the description length of the grammar parsed by machine with the grammar fixed by artificial. In one of the experiments, we use Stanford parser to parse ASBC corpus, and the description length is 53.0Mb. The description length of rule is only 52,683. In the other experiment, we use Stanford parser to parse Sinica Treebank and compare the description length of the generated grammar with the origin. The result shows that the description length of grammar of the Sinica Treebank is 2.76Mb, and the grammar generated by Stanford parser is 4.02Mb.

Bearing witness for nurses in practice with persons living their dying

Tschanz, Coby Lynne 03 December 2009 (has links)
Framed within Parse's theory of human becoming, this descriptive, exploratory study addressed the research question: What is the meaning of the experience of bearing witness for nurses in practice with persons living their dying. Study themes in the language of the participants were enduring commitment surfaces gifts and burdens, telling-not telling mingles with closeness-reserve. and fostering continuing competent practice. Interpreted in the language of the researcher, study findings were written as tenacious devotion engenders exquisite encumbrances, guarded intimacy, and fostering cherished confidence. Study themes were linked primarily with theoretical concepts of valuing, connecting-separating, revealing-concealing, and transforming. Findings were discussed in light of relevant literature, and possibilities for nursing practice, education, policy, and further research were offered.
