Workplace industrial relations in the general print sector covered by national bargaining

Set against a background of technological change, national bargaining and union merger, this thesis considers the impact of a changing structural, economic and political climate on the resilience of national pay bargaining within general print, a little documented but important section of the economy. It seeks to examine contemporary workplace industrial relations where, against national trends, national bargaining has been resilient. It is in the light of there being a long association with strong, regulatory unionism within the sector that this study seeks to explore the reality of workplace industrial relations under national bargaining. There has been a wealth of theoretical and empirical data produced on the background to the wider debate on the declining influence of multi-employer bargaining across the UK economy. However, little work has been committed to the general printing sector that investigates why, in the face of fundamental changes to industrial relations practice, the national agreement for this sector appears to have continued relatively unscathed. The thesis draws on the experience of twelve branches with respect to the impact of the national agreement; three case studies in general print sector companies located in the South West, Humberside and Anglia regions; and on documentary evidence and participant observation. Analysis of the thesis was informed by classical and contemporary writers on industrial relations. The thesis finds a shift from traditional adversarial approaches to partnership in national agreement negotiations. The thesis reveals that at the workplace level, the chapel structure remains intact with its traditional, hierarchal structure and the accompanying issues of gender segregation and worker exclusion remaining firmly embedded within chapels. Behind this appearance of chapel strength an air of apathy and poor organisation impacts on union activity and local bargaining. The thesis concludes by critiquing shifts away from traditional bargaining and questions the state of workplace organisation with changes in union structure. Importantly, the thesis presents data on the state of collective bargaining in the sector, and in particular identifies a shift from the traditional adversarial approach to partnership in the national agreement; it also identifies the difference in the image and reality of workplace organisation in the sector where behind the appearance of chapel strength lies an air of apathy and poor organisation that ultimately impacts on chapel activity and local bargaining. Using Kelly’s model for union renewal the thesis assesses the level of union activity and considers the likelihood of increased union activity in the workplace in the general print sector.

Firm innovations from voluntary dyadic engagement with nonprofit organisations : an exploratory UK study

This dissertation presents the findings of an exploratory collective case-study examining corporate innovations arising from voluntary dyadic engagement between UK firms and nonprofit organisations (NPOs) focused on social issues. Whilst the extant literature demonstrates that pro-active engagement with NPOs can assist firms innovate, there has been no empirical work which explores the relationship between the engagement and the innovation outcome: a gap which this research addresses. In doing so, it illustrates how concepts and constructs from the innovation management literature can be applied usefully to the stakeholder and cross-sector collaboration field. To date, empirical studies addressing firm-NPO engagements have concentrated overwhelmingly on partnerships to address environmental issues. This study provides insights into cross-sector engagements focused on addressing social issues. Using a form of analytic induction to evaluate qualitative case-data from ten dyadic engagements, this dissertation addresses the question: “how do firms innovate through engagement with social issues nonprofit organisations?” The research found that product and service innovations resulted from engagements where the firm had an external stakeholder orientation and was focused on delivering tangible demonstrations of corporate responsibility. Process innovations, by contrast, were produced from engagements where firms had an internal stakeholder orientation. Two distinctions were noted in the innovation process, too. Firstly, a more exploratory approach to dyadic engagement activities, which resulted in an emergent innovation process; and secondly, a focused and pre-determined search activity to exploit the resources of the nonprofit partner which demonstrated a more planned innovation process. In addition, two distinct boundary spanning roles were identified: in dyads with no direct management involvement in the engagement, the role was associated with formal responsibilities from senior management to „manage‟ innovation opportunities and outcomes. In dyads where senior management were involved, there was no such formality; the boundary spanner acted to „facilitate‟ search and exploration to locate opportunities for innovation through idea exchange. The application of innovation constructs to the business and society field has enabled firm engagement with nonprofit stakeholders to be examined through a new lens and demonstrated how firms innovate from such relationships. In particular it has highlighted the key role played by the firm boundary spanner (relationship manager) and how this role alters depending on senior management involvement: a distinction which has not been made in the extant literature and would benefit from further examination.

Practices, encounters, and narratives : an ethnography of global school partnerships

This thesis makes a productive contribution to understanding the rapidly expanding and contested field of global school partnerships, by placing the rich narratives from a handful of school partnerships into the global education context of social, historical, political, and cultural processes. Principally, it tells the story of one partnership, between two primary schools in rural Devon and urban Tanzania, nested within a network of partnerships and governed by DfID’s Global School Partnership (GSP) programme. The cross-continental nature of the school partnerships called for a multi-sited, ethnographic approach, informed and shaped by postcolonial and feminist principles. Partnerships comprise a range of practices, most significant of which were the reciprocal teacher visits that punctuated, and energised, the partnership calendar, presenting spaces for encounter. The emotional and embodied encounters formed the backbone of the partnerships, and produced narratives that were circulated amongst the partnerships and re-presented to audiences in the home country. Firstly, school partnerships engendered the production of moral subjectivities, which were underscored by broad discourses of citizenship, global citizenship, and moral education. With its objective to foster global citizenship, the global partnership occupied an ambiguous position within this discursive framework. Secondly, the encounters presented moments in which narratives of education, teaching, and learning were produced, contested, negotiated, and in some cases, reworked by the participating teachers. As a cultural device, the GSP was both indicative, and constitutive, of the discourse surrounding the neoliberal realignment of the education sector around the world, and provided a productive lens through which to reflect upon the contemporary transformation of the institution. Importantly, the GSP presented a significant site in which neoliberal stories of aspiration, hard work, and global outlooks, became intimately entangled with ‘caring’ stories of concern and responsible citizenship. Most scholarship has focused on the role of secondary and tertiary education sectors in the production of the knowledge economy, but this ethnography finds that nascent discourses and imaginaries of the ‘global’ citizen are already being established and performed in primary schools around the world.

Narrative evaluation of a community-based child care and education intervention: the case of Muula Center in Zomba, Malawi

This study has evaluated outcomes of the care and educational intervention set up for children of Magalasi and the surrounding villages since 2003. Magalasi Village is located in the rural area of Zomba District in Malawi, Southern East of Africa. The study has investigated perceptions, attitudes and ultimately meanings that participants have attached to this intervention. In doing so, it has established the effectiveness of this intervention, which is based on based on the principle of partnership, and aimed at improving the care and education of young children of Magalasi Village. The study employed the narrative inquiry approach situated within a hermeneutic phenomenological framework. Data was collected from 35 community participants using conversational narratives and has been analyzed thematically. The study has generated numerous findings; way beyond assessing the objectives set out at the beginning of the intervention, 40 themes in total. The major findings are: a) the reversal of child neglect situation; resulting in improvement in the hygiene and personal care of nearly all children in Magalasi village; b) highly improved school performance of most children attributed to improved school preparedness and leading to most children enjoying and staying in school, and successfully completing primary education; c) highly appreciable nutritional support to children; and d) existence of challenges and tensions underlying the implementation process. Overall, the Muula Center is having a huge positive impact on the care and education of most children of Magalasi village with minimal financial and essential technical support. Therefore, the financial, technical and community ingredients that are responsible for the delivery of the care and educational services in this intervention need to be sustained for continued impact. Also, a good understanding of challenges and tensions underlying the implementation process bears the potential of identifying and addressing critical issues, which will lead to further strengthening of the efficacy of the intervention. / Graduate / khamachibwana@gmail.com

The aim of this master thesis is to compare the status of marriage and registered partnerships across branches of law. The purpose of such comparison was to find out whether it is equal or unequal status and indicate any shortcomings of the legislation in this regard. The thesis is divided into five chapters, each dedicated to a different area of comparison or outlining future legal developments regarding this issue. The first chapter describes the history of marriage and registered partnerships, including the development of homosexuality, the conclusion and termination of these institutes and then analyzes their differences in the described area. The second chapter of this thesis deals with comparison of the rights and obligations of spouses and partners in private law. Attention is focused on civil, family and labour law, but the thesis does not omit the private international law. The most important topics in this area are upbringing of child and property arrangements of spouses and partners. Following the third chapter compares rights and obligations of spouses and partners in public law. This thesis analyzes Czech legislation regulating relationships of same-sex couples and their options regarding family founding provided by Czech legal regulation. The aim of the thesis is to analyze and evaluate current Czech legislation and put it into international context. To attain this aim, this thesis uses three different approaches. Firstly it provides conclusions of conterporary social sciences in the field of parenthood of same-sex couples and impacts of homosexual parenting onto various areas of psychological and social adjustment od children. Secondly, the comparative study of czech legislation and legislations of Norway, United Kingdom, Germany and Slovakia is included. Thirdly, relevant cases decided by European Court of Human Rights are analyzed. Upon the findings provided by these analysis, the thesis evaluate suitability of czech legal regulation and propose possible future development in this area.

This study seeks to examine and assess the effectiveness of the Eastern Partnership Policy (EaP) of the European Union. Beside introduction of positive novelties of the Eastern Partnership, this paper gives a premium attention to scrutinize the possible limitations and shortfalls of EaP. Hence, the study aims to analyze some internal and external factors that complicate the effective functioning of the EaP. The inconsistency of the EU policy structure, the role of Russia and its Eurasian Economic Union (EaEU) in EAP, the ambivalent policy of some Member States (Germany and Italy are examined) toward the EaP, unconsidered discrepancy of eastern partners are analyzed and considered as prime reasons of ineffectiveness. In addition, examined case studies of Ukraine and Azerbaijan reveal that the EU's commitment to their "shared values" are controversial. This paper presents that the EU should find a balance between its economic/energy interests and normative values vis-a-vis Eastern Partners in order to fill the gap between its goals and achievements.

Cette thèse propose une étude des partenariats pour le développement en prenant pour exemple le cas du partenariat entre l’Inde et le Sénégal. La revendication de bénéficies mutuelles se trouve au cœur de ce partenariat. L’Inde et le Sénégal étant deux démocraties vibrantes, nous pouvons supposer que les dits bénéfices ont pour finalité d’augmenter le bien-être des citoyens de ces deux pays. Ainsi, cette thèse se fonde sur l’étude du développement dans la mesure où il contribue à l’augmentation des capacités, de la liberté et des perspectives du peuple dans les deux pays étudiés (comme le définit Amartya Sen 1999, 2002). Basée sur ces hypothèses, la thèse pose la question suivante : « Un partenariat revendiquant des bénéfices mutuels peut-il conduire à un développement mutuel ?». Le corollaire induit par cette problématique questionne l’équité dans la distribution des bénéfices aux partenaires, c’est-à-dire, est ce que le partenariat est équitable et juste comme il se revendique ? L’étude des acteurs, des motivations, des moyens, des instruments, des méthodes, de la nature et des finalités de ce partenariat feront objet de cette thèse. La thèse conclue en indiquant que les divergences, erreurs, l’ignorance, la malhonnêteté et même l’identification peuvent créer des désaccords en contradiction avec le comportement juste en faveur du développement. Néanmoins, en s’appuyant sur le travail de Froese (2001), Nussbaum (2011), Rawls (1999), Rousseau (2012) et Tocqueville (1981) la thèse soutient que le développement mutuel et juste est en faveur de la poursuite du partenariat. / Taking cue from Rawls’s (2012) work on distributive justice, the thesis studies development partnership through the case study of India and Senegal. Mutual benefits have been asserted time and again as the core element of this partnership. Being two thriving democracies, it shall be assumed that the ultimate beneficiaries of the ‘intended benefits’ are to be the people of India and Senegal. Hence, in this thesis we choose to see development as it should enhance capability, freedom and opportunity (as put forward by Sen 1999, 2002) for the citizens of the two countries being studied. With such beliefs, the thesis is naturally centred on the question, “Can a relationship based on mutual benefits lead to mutual development?” An important corollary to the problematic is the equity in the distribution of benefits adhering to the partners’ i.e. whether at all the partnership is equal and faire as it is claimed to be? It is hence, worth studying the ‘who’, the ‘why’, the ‘how’ and the ‘what’ of this partnership through the actors, the motivations, the means, the methods, the nature and the ‘ends’ of it. The thesis argues strongly in favour of equity for fair and sustainable development. The thesis argues that discrepancies, errors, identification, unawareness and unethical behaviour might lead to distortions from just behaviour expected in favour of development. However, drawing on the works of Froese (2001), Nussbaum (2011), Rawls (1999), Rousseau (2012) and Tocqueville (1981) the thesis concludes that fair, mutual development would be in the favour of the partnership.
