Relationship Bonding, Trust and Cultural Distance in Strategic International Public-Private Partnerships in Africa

Strategic international public-private partnerships (SIPPPs) involve private multinational and public domestic sector parties. SIPPPs are a more complex but less studied form of international strategic alliance (ISA) and increasingly important in the development of emerging economies. A growing body of ISA research has suggested the importance of cultural differences in the often-reported failure of such cross-cultural relationships, but their exact nature remains unknown. This study examines the effects of both national and organisational cultural value systems on trust-building in SIPPPs. It uniquely also tests whether the two types of cultural values are accorded differently by the two types of partner, private and public. The complex relationship building processes were studied through the combined lenses of social-exchange and cultural-exchange theories, providing a rich perspective on the phenomenon under study. The sample, based on purposive sampling, consisted of successful and unsuccessful SIPPS of various sizes, from different industries, operating in a number of African countries. Africa, with its challenging environment and increasing focus on SIPPPs, represented an "extreme context" within which hypotheses could be rigorously tested. The relationships were tested empirically using structural equation modelling. The study confirmed a strong relationship between partners’ economic and collaborative interdependency on the one hand, and mutual trust-levels on the other. Cultural difference was shown to have both a negative direct effect as well as a positive moderating effect on trust building, providing support for the notion of a “cultural paradox”. Strong evidence was provided that partners from opposite sides of the dyad, informed by their respective cultural backgrounds, have different perceptions of the relative importance of these relationships in building trust. The findings have theoretical and practical significance, suggesting that SIPPP partners can improve trust levels and sustain their relationship by building ties of economic interdependence and engaging in collaborative actions to build their collaborative interdependence. The importance of partners being sensitive to each other’s needs and perceptions, and of engaging in reciprocity to build mutual confidence and trust seems critical. Background: Migrant farm workers are exposed to job hazards in Tennessee, which is among the top five tomato-producing states. Objectives: This project sought to cultivate and evaluate a partnership to marshal greater resources to address migrants’ concerns and to better prepare future health professionals to address occupational issues. Methods: In the spring of 2008, an interprofessional student–faculty team at a regional university catalyzed a partnership with a clinic for migrants and a national network caring for the itinerant underserved. Results: Several community-based participatory research (CBPR) activities are underway. The partnership has resulted in the following projects: Use of the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) method to identify job tasks likely to be injurious, development and use of a health screening questionnaire to capture more information about occupational health, and continuing education seminars for providers and a case-based curriculum module for third-year medical students. Conclusions: Interprofessional service learning about migrant occupational health issues may have its greatest impact as participating students enter the regional workforce, caring for patients employed in slow-to-change agricultural operations.

The thesis discusses the participatory governance establishment in Georgia and Ukraine with a focus on the elements of deliberative public participation. Through the analysis of the established practices of citizen engagement, the research attempts to find out whether Georgia and Ukraine managed to construct the system of the inclusion of the people in policy-making and set up the opportunities for deliberative public participation. The thesis contains the analysis of the legislative frameworks and the implemented Open Government Partnership initiatives in Georgia and Ukraine to find out which platforms of citizen engagement are set up in both countries and identify their character: do these platforms include the elements of deliberative public participation? If yes, to what extent? Each of the main mechanisms of citizen engagement is analysed according to the four categories defined in the evaluation framework. After identifying the level of deliberative public participation in both countries, the thesis discusses the environments both in Georgia and Ukraine to understand which factors underpinned the process of the development of deliberative public participation, and also, which factors held back the progress.

Revisionsbranschen är en mansdominerad bransch som är känd för att ha lägst andel kvinnor bland dem ledande positionerna. Kvinnor har stött på olika hinder och haft svårare att nå högre positioner än män, men på senare år har branschen blivit mer jämställd. Studier har visat att könsfördelningen inom delägarkretsen har förändrats till det bättre. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka kvinnliga delägares uppfattningar av faktorer som påverkat kvinnors möjligheter att bli delägare i medelstora och stora revisionsbyråer samt om de uppfattar att dessa faktorer fortfarande finns.   Studiens teoretiska referensram fokuserar på revisionsbranschen och strukturella teorier. I studien har ett kvalitativt tillvägagångssätt använts för att få en djupgående förståelse om hur kvinnliga delägare upplever att olika faktorer har påverkat dem att bli delägare samt om de upplever att en förändring har skett i branschen. Vi har genomfört sex semistrukturerade intervjuer med kvinnliga delägare från fyra olika bolag.   Resultatet av empirin visar att de kvinnliga delägarna inte upplevt hinder för att nå delägarskap. Det enda hindret som påverkar möjligheterna för att bli delägare är varje individs egna egenskaper, ambitioner och mål. Föräldraskap ses inte som ett hinder av delägarna, däremot upplever de att kombinationen av familj och karriär kan upplevas vara svår. Delägarna upplever att det har skett en förändring bland könsfördelningen i delägarkretsen och att branschen är under utveckling. Med den här studien vill vi bidra till en ökad förståelse kring vilka hinder som påverkar kvinnors avancemang inom revisionsbranschen. / The auditing industry is a male dominated industry that is known for having the lowest proportion of women among the leading positions. Women have encountered various obstacles and found it more difficult to reach higher positions than men, but in recent years the industry has become more equal. Studies have shown that the gender distribution within the circle of partners has changed. The purpose of this study is to investigate female partners’ perceptions of factors that have affected women’s opportunities to become partners in medium-sized and large auditing firms and whether they perceive that these factors still exist.  The study's theoretical framework focuses on the auditing industry and structural theories. A qualitative approach was used to gain an in-depth understanding of how female partners feel that various factors have influenced them to become partners and whether they feel that a change has taken place in the industry. We conducted six semi-structured interviews with female partners from four firms.  The results show that the female partners don’t experience obstacles to achieve partnership. The only obstacle is each individual's own characteristics, ambitions and goals. Parenting is not seen as an obstacle by the partners. However, they experience that the combination of family and career can be difficult. The partners feel that there has been a change in the gender distribution in the co-owner and that the industry is still changing. With this study, we want to contribute to an increased understanding of the obstacles that affect women's advancement in the auditing industry.

The Power of Partnership: Understanding the Dynamic of Co-Teaching Pairs

The co-teaching relationship is the foundational structure upon which a co-taught classroom is built. Co-teaching is often defined as a general education teacher and a special education teacher teaching a group of heterogeneous students together. Born from inclusion, co-teaching attempts to reach all learners. With this service delivery model comes challenges and a large learning curve, so a strong foundation is imperative. Literature and educational scholars have expressed that the foundation of co-teaching is the relationship between teachers. Authors in the literature have stressed the importance of the relationship however, little to no research exists studying the dynamics of the co-teaching partnership. Through a phenomenological approach, this study sought to understand the dynamics of the co-teaching partnership between a general education teacher and a special education teacher. Framed with collaborative professionalism and a thorough examination of the working partnership, this study was able to dive deep into the phenomenon of co-teaching, as was experienced by each teacher. By uncovering the authentic experiences of co-teachers, the understanding of the co-teaching partnership increase, and educators and administrators were provided a different frame of understanding for future co-teaching implementation. By studying the co-teaching partnership and the phenomenon of the partnership, an authentic understanding was uncovered. Understanding the authentic experiences of co-teachers allows educators and administrators to better prepare and support the co-teaching practice.

"The Constitutive Act of the African Union (AU Act) recognises in article 4(c) as one of its principles: 'participation of the people in the activities of the Union'. This principle could be implemented through, among others, the involvement of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the activities of the AU. This study submits that NGOs will play a meaningful role in ensuring the promotion and protection of human rights by the AU and its institutions. The New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) is an economic programme of the AU. The NEPAD document outlines among other things the promotion and protection of human rights as a necessary precondition for the success of NEPAD. Therefore, a lot of NGO input is needed for the efective implementation of NEPAD's human rights ovjective as well. ...
