Pastoral care and the challenge of poverty : when opening hearts and minds create possibilities in a marginalised school community

In the „coloured‟ community of Scottsville in the Western Cape, the historical legacy of political violence and abuse, combined with the current social hierarchies of violence, control and abuse, have serious consequences for Scottsville‟s young people. These traumas and the associated discourses create a culture of fear, distrust, hopelessness, humiliation and silence amongst the majority of the young people. I have employed feminist-poststructuralist analyses in order to grasp the complex nature of the challenges of „coloured‟ poverty. Foucault‟s analyses of power relations also offered this research ways to critique pastoral power. Because of Foucault‟s analyses, I became aware that „coloured‟ people‟s experience of poverty and invisibility could not be separated from my own experience of the power of privilege and visibility. The operation of unjust power relations in the „coloured‟ community therefore compelled me to use my education and privileges to work for the restitution of the voices and of relational and physical possibilities in the lives of „coloured‟ young people. What started out as a research project became a cross-cultural journey of reparation and of my own humanisation. I argue that the praxis of embodied solidarity with the „other‟ is the challenge that poverty ultimately poses to people of privilege and to the ways in which theology defines itself. In doing the work of reparation I was supported by the relational theme of solidarity with the marginalised provided by a feminist theology of praxis. The knowledges of the women in the community in particular served as resources of faith. The research methodologies I used in this research combined the practices of narrative therapy, creative writing, mentoring and drama. The purpose of these methodologies was to invite young people into various meaning-making processes which enabled them to become the agents of their own lives and of a culture of possibility. Derrida‟s work on deconstruction and the aporia provided this research with a framework for the theory of possibility. Through the methodologies of networking and advocacy, other people have joined us in going beyond the physical and relational limitations of poverty to create possibilities for the young people and their schools. / Practical theology / D. Outsider Buddhism : a study of Buddhism and Buddhist education in the U.S. prison system

Buddhist prison outreach is a relatively recent development, in the United States of America and elsewhere, and has yet to be chronicled satisfactorily. This thesis traces the physical, legal and social environment in which such activities take place and describes the history of Buddhist prison outreach in the USA from its earliest indications in the 1960s to the present day. The mechanics of Buddhist prison outreach are also examined. Motivations for participating in Buddhist prison outreach are discussed, including Buddhist textual supports, role models and personal benefits. This paper then proposes that volunteers active in this area are members of a liminal communitas as per Victor Turner and benefit from ‘non-player’ status, as defined by Ashis Nandy. Africa is seen as one of the most diverse continents regarding faiths, traditions and cultures. This diversity put a strong challenge on Mission and Pastoral care.

Pastoral care as community care : towards an intergrative approach to healing and well-being within the HIV and AIDS discourse

Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study, in addition to problematizing a one-dimensional approach to health and well-being within the HIV and AIDS discourse, also aims to highlight the need and promote the idea for integrative community pastoral care as fundamental in responding to the HIV and AIDS epidemic. In developing such a framework for an integrative approach to healing and care, it becomes clear that a number of paradigmatic shifts in pastoral care are called for. In the past most of the prevention and intervention strategies within the discourse on healing within the HIV and AIDS epidemic, focused on the people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) and the medical science in its search for cure and effective antiretroviral medication. Little attention use to be given to issues of care as the primary focus appeared to have been on behaviour change strategies. However, as the complex nature of the epidemic and its impacts became more apparent, it gradually dawned on all disciplines that the virus entails more than an individual ailment as a medical concern. With the realization that the epidemic penetrates the quality of life and the basic structures for livelihood and meaningful living on all levels, came the acknowledgement that it has become a systemic and community issue. Any endeavour to be engaged with the epidemic should therefore shift from a merely personal (individual focus) and a medical (pharmaceutical focus) approach, to a community approach. Healing and prevention must also become a systemic and communal endeavour, and thus the reason to connect, in this research project, healing with a community approach to the HIV and AIDS epidemic. In the process of developing a framework for integrative care and counselling, the study explores the notions of health and well-being and provides a theological framework for understanding these concepts from a community perspective. This framework necessitates a number of paradigmatic shifts, particularly with regards to understanding the ecclesial identity of the church as a community of care. Both the understanding of health and well-being and that of an identity of care culminates from the understanding of God‘s passionate involvement in the human predicament of suffering, as implied by a theopaschitic approach. In order to develop an inclusive framework of care to be taken up in the ecclesial identity of the church, a number of metaphors for a community of care are explored as alternatives to the traditional kerygmatik model of the church. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie lug nie net die problematiek rondom 'n eendimensionele benadering tot gesondheid en welstand binne die MIV en VIGS diskoers uit nie, maar poog ook om die behoefte aan 'n integrerende gemeenskaps-benadering tot die MIV en VIGS epidemie te beklemtoon en sodanige benadering te bevorder. Dit word duidelik dat sodanige raamwerk vir 'n integrerende benadering tot heling en sorg sekere paradigmatiese skuiwe binne pastorale sorg vereis. In die verlede het voorkoming en intervensie strategieë met betrekking tot die MIV en VIGS diskoers meestal gefokus op die mense wat met MIV en VIGS leef, asook op die mediese wetenskap se pogings om 'n geneesmiddel en effektiewe antiretrovirale medisyne te vind. Min aandag was gegee aan die kwessies wat verband hou met versorging, en dit wil voorkom asof die klem eerder primêr geplaas was op strategieë om gedrag te verander. Svenska kyrkans funktion i den palliativa vården : - ett religionssociologiskt perspektiv

Through the lenses of religion’s role in society, the purpose of this thesis is to examine, the role of the Church of Sweden in providing support to people at the end of life. Questions asked are:  "What types of spiritual support is offered by the Church of Sweden during terminal care provided in patients' homes and how is this support expressed in church orders, assembly instructions, plans of operations and congregation letters?" and " How can the work of the Church of Sweden be understood, based on theories of religion's role in society? The method used is a content analysis of the Church Order, assembly instructions, plans of operations and congregation letters in 17 different congregations within the diocese of Lund. I then engage in a discussion with theories on differentiation and the privatization of religion as a means to interpret my results. My conclusion is that the investigated parishes in the diocese of Lund do not have any specific goals or targets documented for spiritual support to people who are at life’s end cared in their homes. This can be understood based on theories of differentiation. The privatization of religion may explain the phenomenon that people's religious needs are not linked to the collective institutional religion of the Church of Sweden.  This is despite of the fact that a large proportion of the Swedish population belongs to the Church of Sweden. The de-privatization of religion, at a societal level can explain the reason why these concerns are attracting an increased interest from the healthcare services as people's need of spiritual support are discussed. The question of who should meet the patients' needs for spiritual support is unclear.

La mise en scène de l’activité religieuse : parcours ethnographique dans un centre de détention pour femmes du Québec

Dans cette recherche, je me penche sur les activités de pastorale d’un centre de détention pour femmes du Québec. En me basant sur des observations participantes réalisées dans la chapelle catholique de l’établissement, j’étudie les interactions qui composent les activités religieuses : les gestes, les paroles et les comportements qui ont lieu avant, pendant et après les représentations. En m’inspirant de l’approche dramaturgique d’Erving Goffman, je reconstruis dans un premier temps le déroulement des activités de pastorale de la prison. Ainsi, je décris ce que les acteurs disent et font en situation, à travers les séquences d’actions qu’ils construisent mutuellement. Dans ce processus de reconstruction des activités religieuses, je remarque la présence d’« incidents », c’est-à-dire de gestes et de paroles qui, se manifestant avec récurrence, ralentissent leur cadence. Je tente donc, dans un deuxième temps, de comprendre et d’expliquer la récurrence des « incidents ». L’étude de ces derniers permet de réfléchir 1) au caractère total de l’institution dans laquelle ils prennent forme, 2) à la culture des participantes qui les occasionnent ainsi qu’à 3) la structure des activités au sein desquels ils émergent. En rendant compte des situations observées et en analysant leurs interactions, cette recherche permet une meilleure compréhension des activités religieuses « en train de se faire » en milieu carcéral sans omettre un regard sur son contenu et sur la façon dont elle se concrétise en situation. / In this research I explore the pastoral activities offered at a women’s detention center in the province of Quebec. Based on participant observations conducted in the Catholic chapel of the establishment, I examine the interactions that are part of religious activities : gestures, words, and behaviors that take place before, during, and after the performances. Drawing on Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical approach I first reconstruct the various situations that compose the prison’s pastoral activities in order to describe what the actors say and do during these activities. By reconstructing religious activities, I discover the presence of “incidents”. What I call “incident” are words or gestures that keep manifesting themselves and slowing down the pace of the religious activities. Secondly, I try to understand and explain the recurrence of these « incidents ». This allowing me to reflect on 1) the “total” character of the institution in which they emerge, 2) the culture of participants by which they are incurred, and 3) the structure of religious activities in which they take shape. Through the portraying of situations, the analysis of interactions, and the description of their specificity, this research provides a better understanding of the religious activities as they are performed in prison without neglecting to look at its contents and manifestation in situ.

Assessment of Seminary Education on End of Life Issues

Background: The US health care system faces increased costs from end of life (EOL) care. The intensive approach to EOL treatment with greater use of procedures in ICUs has led to decedent spending six times greater than that of survivors in the hospital. Experts in ICU and Palliative care fields have called for greater utilization of end of life planning and education. To date, EOL education has been dominated by the technologically driven medical field and the church has been under-utilized. The US population relies on clergy support for many mental health and EOL issues. Clergy report feeling uncomfortable in their ability to provide EOL care and desire more education. Research in clergy preparation for EOL education is relatively small and no studies in Virginia have been completed. Purpose: Document the current state of Richmond, VA, seminary education on EOL issues and document graduating seminarians' desire for more EOL education. Methods: A two-page questionnaire was approved by the VCU IRB and distributed amongst graduating seminarians at the three Richmond Theological Consortium seminaries: Union-PSCE, Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, and Virginia Union University Seminary. The first section of the survey evaluated education on EOL issues received while in seminary. Experience with counseling the dying and bereaved along with placement at medical institutions was also evaluated. The second section evaluated the desire for more didactic and practical education. Desire for future Continuing Education Classes was also evaluated along with demographics. SAS was utilized to create frequencies and chi square associations and odds ratios.Results: Overall, 75 surveys were returned, a 35% response rate. Eighty-six percent of respondents stated that pastoral care overall education was covered (missing = 20), while 38.3% stated that medical aspects of dying was covered (missing = 9). Fifty-seven percent had some kind of placement at a medical institution. Sixty-nine percent had experience in an EOL situation. Approximately 75% wanted more education, with practical education and pastoral care predominating. Forty-eight percent desired more theologically-focused EOL continuing education classes. Prior education in preaching sermons and pastoral care of the bereaved was associated with desire for further education in those respective topics, OR = 3.42, 95%CI 1.58, 11.05 and OR = 4.64, 95%CI 1.10, 19.50, respectively. Placement at an institution was associated with desire for more didactic (OR = 3.10, 95%CI 1.03, 9.35) and practical education (OR = 3.89, 95%CI 1.22, 12.35). Experience with counseling the bereaved was associated with a decreased likelihood of wanting more education on how to interact with medical and hospice staff. Demographics were not statistically associated with desire for more education.Conclusions: Several EOL topics do not receive full coverage, specifically self care of the pastor, teaching adults about end of life planning, the medical aspects of end of life, and mobilizing the laity for the care of the dying and bereaved. Placement at an institution or experience was absent in 30-40% of participants. The majority of participants wanted more education. Placement along with previous education was associated with desire for further education. Curriculum change to reflect these findings may benefit in increasing the overall confidence and competence of pastors, increase the ministerial goals of the church, and aid in preparing the public for the end of life, thus decreasing the burden on the health care system.

At the beginning, there is a description of basic terms such as communication, priest and crisis. Furthermore, the thesis discusses the pastoral care with regard for the ill and dying ones. In particular chapters biblical and psychological view of illness, dying and death are introduced. In the Chapter Pastoral Care I describe the main goals of care, the history of charity in term of the Christian Church, the main method of pastoral care- conversation and the current situation in the area of care in hospitals in the Czech Republic. The research was conducted in hospital in Chrudim on the department of long-term care. The research`s objective was to determine how the patients percieve the pastoral care, what they expect from the pastoral care and whether they would personally use this care. Pastoral care in hospitals in the Czech Republic is still being shaped up. People often worry that a priest will try to persuade them to believe, if they use his services. Clinical pastoral education for Igbo society : a cross cultural model for a family/community-based educational process in pastoral care.

CPE is Western in origin, it can be transplanted and adapted to the Igbo soil and be fedb with the local nutrients. In the view of the researcher, this can bring about a new CPE model which is called the "Family/Community-Based CPE Model." The above mentioned model puts the family and community at the center of the CPE program. The CPE center will be located in a community-based setting that will enable the CPE students to visit different families and experience community life and to learn how the people respond to different events in their lives. The students can also visit ceremonies that give meaning to the people's lives such as marriage, naming, funerals and other events through which the people express their communal life. Inter-professional collaboration can take place between the CPE center and different professionals, as well as the local practitioners. All these experiences will form part of the verbatim reports and reflections during the program. The already existing actionreflection- action model of CPE will be remodeled to be theory-observation-action-reflection. Local churches and health : an examination of four local churches' contribution to direct health outcomes on the Copperbelt Province of Zambia.

The research explores and examines the relationship that exists between religion and health. Four church health related activities were examined as case studies to assert their direct and indirect contribution to health and well being of communities on the Copperbelt Province of Zambia. The main thrust and perspective of the study is a theological position on the contribution of the Christian Church toward holistic health care and provision. The study is rooted in a large field of study called African Religiou s Health Assets Program [ARHAP] which has developed a theory to help establish the link that exist between religion and health in health care. The insights from the ARHAP theoretical framework are engaged in this study to identify the religious health assets known as tangible and intangible in each institution and how they contribute to health promotion and care . Key informants from each of the four religious health institutions were interviewed to establish and examine the kind of religious health assets they have and on how they affect and contribute to health outcomes. Through these case studies of four Christian religious health institutions, in Ndola and Masaiti districts, the thesis has shown that religious health institutions have diverse assets that enhance and contribute directly and indirectly to better health outcomes . These assets [referring to what is present in these institutions] are labeled as ‘religious health assets’ in this thesis .
