<p>Uppsatsen är en kvalitativ studie med utgångspunkt i intervjuer med fem män. I fokus är deras patriarkala rötter, deras förutsättningar för integration och deras syn på heder. Syftet med denna studie är att fördjupa förståelsen för hur män med patriarkala rötter upplever sin integrationsprocess i det svenska samhället. Målet är att uppnå en förståelse för och insikt i de faktorer som är väsentliga för dessa mäns integration men också de omständigheter som motverkar integration. De forskningsfrågor som legat till grund för studien var: Vilka skäl har de haft för att flytta till Sverige? Hur har de etablerat sig i det nya landet? Känner de sig delaktiga i det svenska samhället? Vilka förändringar har skett i familjestrukturerna? Har synen på heder förändrats sedan migrationen till Sverige? Hur definierar de begreppet heder i dag? Resultaten analyseras utifrån den tidigare presenterade forskningen samt teorier som förändringar i patriarkala familjestrukturer, det civila samhället, stat, marknad, familj och kollektivism kontra individualism. Resultaten visar att det sker ständiga förändringar i familjestrukturer med patriarkala värderingar samt även mentalitetsförändringar hos män med patriarkala rötter i integrationsprocessen. Studiens inriktning på förutsättningar för integration hos män med patriarkala rötter byggdes på integrationsdimensioner såsom arbetsintegration, boendeintegration, socialintegration, medborgarskapsintegration och subjektivintegration, utifrån ett integrationsperspektiv. Studien visade att det fanns omständigheter både på individuell- och samhällsnivå som motverkade integrationen hos män med patriarkala rötter. Resultaten visade också att förändringar som har skett när det gäller synen på heder överlag inte är så stora.</p>

The purpose of this essay is to explore how social workers view a possible connection between exposure to honour violence and development of mental illness and/or substance abuse. We first heard of the possible connection from a voluntary organization who work in this field and who believe that this connection could be common. We therefore wanted to explore this from the perspective of social workers who come into contact with victims of honour violence: was this something they had noticed? How did they deal with it if it was noticed? We also asked how the possible connection could be interpreted and, supposing the social workers had failed to notice the connection, why this could be. We made five qualitative interviews with six social workers working in different contexts whom within their work come across honour-related issues. We took our theoretical basis from research about children exposed to violence as well as theories about patriarchal family structures and the development of identity. Our results show that it is common for girls exposed to honour violence to feel mentally ill and that this can lead to anxiety, depression and/or self harm. Not all of the social workers had noticed a connection between exposure to honour violence and the development of substance abuse, but several of them had witnessed it. The treatment of mental illness happened mainly within the workplace, though sometimes the psychiatric clinic was contacted. Where social workers came across both substance abuse and honour violence, they had difficulties finding help for the girls. Furthermore the results show that the connection can be understood in light of what the girls are exposed to as well as the difficulties with a possible break up from the family. This means a difficult and complex process where the identity of the girls are negatively affected, which also gives consequences for their mental state and can possibly lead to the development of substance abuse.

The honour norm is strong within the Middle East but is scattered all over the world. As a result of immigration, the honorary context has become more established in Sweden. Violence, committed in the name of honour, is commonly executed by male family members. Thus, young men are forced, in some degree, to participate in the oppression and control of their sisters. Violence exercised in the name of honour, can be traced back to the patriarchal family system in which woman are subordinate to men. The purpose of this study is to highlight the young men's subjective perspective to honour and honour-related violence, as well as if they have managed to distance themselves from it. In the study, interviews are conducted with four young men. The results obtained show that some of the young men have an ambivalent attitude to certain matters relating to honour and what is not acceptable female behaviour. The results reveal that certain parts of the patriarchal thinking are identified in the opinions of some of the young men interviewed. Further, the results also suggest that education and community action are essential for the discussion of honour and the honour norm, in order to create change.
