Patterson v. Bonaparte and the Interesting Case of a Marriage, the validity of which was argued in 1861 by French attorney, Antoine-Louise Berryer and a Beautiful Bride, Elizabeth Patterson, as portrayed in 1804 by the Artist Gilbert Stuart in Washington City (with a sheer dress, a prince, a republican President, an angry Emperor...and a circle of beautiful, ambitious women led by Dolley Madison)

Bradshaw, Lynn 12 June 2012 (has links)
Gilbert Stuart completed the portrait of the new bride, Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte, as well as portraits of 15 other women during his Washington period from late 1803 to early 1805. Scholars have often discounted this period in Stuart's work for its "compositional simplicity" and repeat choice of a stock white dress for the portraits of many of these women. But to dismiss this period is Stuart's work is to dismiss a period when Stuart positioned himself in the center of the "first circle" in Washington, a circle that included Dolley Madison and her most ambitious friends. Women, in this era after the American and French revolutions, had the freedom to enter into the public discourse. They were liberated from many of the more conservative principals of the early colonial period, shedding their restrictive clothing in the process. Stuart's salon, a highly visible public venue, as well as his ability to portray the strength of character and a direct, forthright gaze of the American woman, all made him extremely popular with women. Stuart, a critical force within the construction of a new image for this Nation, based on Jeffersonian ideas of republicanism, based his practice on simple, natural design influences. My goal is to more thoroughly examine Stuart's decisions in composing Betsy Bonaparte's portrait, as well as the facts surrounding her marriage to Napoleon Bonaparte's youngest brother. I will then consider why Elizabeth Bonaparte's wedding portrait represents the chef d'ouvre of his work during this period and how the young bride served as his muse, influencing his Washington style, and the women who followed her into the painter's studio. / text

Structure determinations of SnO₂ and TiO₂ surfaces by low energy electron diffraction Patterson inversion method

Leung, Wai-yan., 梁偉恩. January 2013 (has links)
The Tin dioxide (SnO2) and Titanium dioxide (TiO2) are very promising materials in Material science. The SnO2 is commonly used as a gas sensor while the TiO2 is used as a catalyst in many reactions. Despite of the usefulness of these two substances, their surface structures lack detail investigations in the previous years. The Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) technique is commonly used to characterize surfaces in the past 40 years, it is a mature system that many researches rely on its result. However, structural analysis in LEED requires comparison with computational results based on pre-defined structure models, which is a time-consuming method and the results are not guaranteed to be found. The direct determinations of structure by Patterson function inversion methods introduced by Huasheng Wu and S. Y. Tong could provide a different path to search for surface structure. In the Patterson function, each maximum in the function corresponds to a relative position vector of atomic pairs. Multiple-angle-incident LEED has to be performed to obtain an artifact-free Patterson function. Serveal SnO2 and TiO2 surfaces have been characterized by LEED and Patterson function inversion. SnO2 (110), (100), (101) , Rutile TiO2 (110), Anatase TiO2 (110) have been prepared by argon ion sputtering and annealing cycles and the cleanness has been checked by Auger Electron Spectroscopy and LEED. Reconstruction is observed based on the study of the LEED patterns. SnO2 (110) surface shows a 4 x 1 reconstruction in UHV environment while it gives 1 x 1 under annealing in oxygen and C(2 x 2) at higher annealing temperature afterward. SnO2 (100) , (101) and Rutile TiO2 (110) surfaces show 1 x 1 reconstruction in UHV environment and the reconstruction persists for further annealing. The Anatase TiO2 (110) surface shows a 3 x 4 reconstruction in UHV environment. The 3 x 4 reconstruction of Anatase TiO2 (110) surface would raise research interests as it is quite a special reconstruction. Multiple-angle-incident LEED has been performed on the SnO2 (100), (101) and Rutile TiO2 (110) surfaces. Patterson function inversion is performed on the surfaces SnO2 (100) and Rutile TiO2 (110) . Only LEED is performed on SnO2 (110) , (101) and Anatase TiO2 (110) surfaces. From Patterson functions analysis, the surface atoms positions are determined for the surface SnO2 (100) and Rutile TiO2 (110). The results show that their reconstructions are negligible, but they have obvious relaxations. / published_or_final_version / Physics / Master / Master of Philosophy

In order to test the four stages of the model, it was realized a transversal study, considering three non-probabilistic samples, each one composed by approximately 100 students from public and private schools from Fortaleza – CE. Participants answered the Strenghts Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), Parenting Stile Inventory (PSI), Antisocial Conduct Questionnaire, Scale of Solitude, variables related to the academic performance and involvement with social deviant groups, as well as demographic questions. Depending on the sample, data were collected from teachers, parents, and students linked to the research institution. It is noteworthy that all ethical procedures were adopted to make the research possible. Data analyzes were performed using SPSS 19. Study 1 aimed to review the first stage of the Coercion Model and presented information about the predictive power of parental styles in relation to conduct problems in childhood. Study 2, which goal was to test the second stage of Coercion Model, pointed out that Conduct Problems were a predictor of social rejection and low academic performance. Study 3 aimed to test the third and fourth stages of the Model and its results partly supported Patterson’s theoretical proposal, once parenting styles (to the detriment of social rejection and low academic performance) presents as having the greatest predictive power in relation to association with deviants groups, which presents as an important predictor in explaining antisocial behaviors. Therefore, it is believed that the results obtained allowed to test the variables suggested by the Patterson’s Model in Brazilian context, contributing to the knowledge about the correlates of antisocial behavior.

Subsistence Practices at Nancy Patterson Village

Whisenhunt, Elizabeth C. M. 09 April 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to gain an insight into the macrobotanical subsistence practices of Nancy Patterson Village and see how those practices fit in with the practices of the general Mesa Verde region by analyzing the burnt macrobotanical remains found in processed flotation samples. Previous work done at Nancy Patterson Village showed a shift in the faunal subsistence practices to a greater reliance on domesticated turkey during the Pueblo III period. However, the macro botanical analysis showed a higher richness of wild plant taxa in the Pueblo III period when compared to Pueblo II. The change to a higher richness of plant taxa in the later period is attributed to the changes in social and environmental climates causing difficulties in sustaining the population. These difficulties pushed the inhabitants to expand their selection of plant types used for food. Despite the higher richness of plant taxa in Pueblo III, other sites from the Central Mesa Verde region had higher richness. However, Nancy Patterson Village used the smaller number of wild plants types more intensely than the other sites from the region. No explanation was found to explain this difference.

Progressive compromises : performing gender, race, and class in historical pageants of 1913

Hewett, Rebecca Coleman 01 October 2010 (has links)
This dissertation explores embodiments of citizenship in three historical pageants of 1913. As historical pageantry reached the height of its popularity in the early twentieth century, the form was criticized by those who felt it represented a limited understanding of community and citizenship. Historical pageants came to prominence at a time in the nation’s history when lynching plagued the south, women agitated for the right to vote, and labor unions organized to demand better working conditions. Popular historical pageants presented a history which ignored these pressing social issues and supported the status quo. As a result, while pageants gained popularity the form was taken up by groups seeking to use pageants for different political purposes. My dissertation interrogates embodiments of citizenship in Progressive Era pageantry through three case studies: W.E.B. Du Bois wrote and staged Star of Ethiopia, devoted to re-telling African-American history; John Reed organized members of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) for a performance of The Paterson Strike Pageant to aid laborers on strike; and Hazel MacKaye staged Allegory in support of women’s suffrage. While each pageant aimed to promote diversity, once each pageant’s historiography landed on live bodies, the gaps between what the pageant argued for and who the pageant simultaneously excluded were made visible. Allegory crafted an argument for white women’s suffrage by excluding recent immigrant and women of color; Du Bois sought to promote the African American middle class by denigrating the working classes; John Reed painted an image of the IWW as a fully united working class while ignoring the racial and ethnic differences that had led to tensions among the group. Despite their progressive intentions, once each pageant moved its political arguments on stage, the choices they made in performance belied their inclusive aspirations. / text

CORGI: Compute Oriented Recumbent Generation Infrastructure

Hunt, Christopher Allen 01 March 2017 (has links)
Creating a bicycle with a rideable geometry is more complicated than it may appear, with today’s mainstay designs having evolved through years of iteration. This slow evolution coupled with the bicycle’s intricate mechanical system has lead most builders to base their new geometries off of previous work rather than expand into new design spaces. This crutch can lead to slow bicycle iteration rates, often causing bicycles to all look about the same. To combat this, several bicycle design models have been created over the years, with each attempting to define a bicycle’s handling characteristics given its physical geometry. However, these models often analyze a single bicycle at a time, and as such, using them in an iterative design process can be cumbersome. This work seeks to improve an existing model used by the Cal Poly Mechanical Engineering department such that it can be used in a proactive, iterative fashion (as opposed to the reactive, single-design paradigm that it currently supports). This is accomplished by expanding the model’s inputs to include more bicycle components as well as differently sized riders. This augmented model is then incorporated into several search platforms ranging from a brute-force implementation to several variants using genetic algorithm concepts. These models allow the designer to specify a bicycle design search space as well as a set of riders upfront, from which the algorithms search out and find strong candidate designs to return to the user. This in turn reduces the overhead on the designer while also potentially discovering new bicycle designs which had not been considered previously viable. Finally, a front-end was created to make it easier for the user to access these algorithms and their results.

Non-linéarité des fonctions booléennes : applications de la théorie des fonctions booléennes et des codes en cryptographie

Bringer, Julien 16 November 2007 (has links) (PDF)
