Directing Movement and the Perception of Space

Tackett, Jared Franklin 16 June 2009 (has links)
An investigation on how architectural elements can direct movement and affect the way we perceive space. The idea is implemented in the design of a playground and pavilion for Elkhorn Lake, located in Jenkins, Kentucky. Wall, column, color, roof, and floor are explored to create a variety of spatial arrangements that affect ways of perceiving and moving through the pavilion and playground. / Master of Architecture

Artioli, Bárbara Olivetti January 2017 (has links)
Orientadora: Profª. Drª. Maria Elizete Kunkel / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal do ABC. / The auricular reconstruction is present since 600 BC through skin flaps implants. In the current years, prostheses have been developed to replace the patient's organ without the use of surgeries. Recently, new technologies, such as anatomical acquisition and additive manufacturing techniques are being applied in the production of auricular prostheses, aiming at obtaining a product with better cost/quality relation when compared to the manual manufacturing process. In this research, a methodology was developed to investigate the use of four methods to acquire the external structure of a volunteer's ear (photogrammetry, 3D scanning, 3D reconstruction of computed tomography images and parameterized 3D modeling) for the production of auricular prosthesis molds by additive manufacture (melt deposition technique). The silicone ear prosthesis produced with the presented methodology shows an excellent esthetic result with only 3% dimensional error. In addition, mechanical analysis (tensile strength and hardness tests) of the used silicone showed that the produced prostheses has excellent mechanical resistance that is not altered by the pigmentation process. Tests with swine skin showed that, of the four analyzed adhesives , three had satisfactory adhesion strength. The results demonstrate the feasibility of an accessible methodology for the production of ear prostheses using free softwares, technologies and supplies available in the Brazilian market.

Konverze uvolněných historických objektů zámku, Žďár nad Sázavou / Conversion relating to vacant historical buildings of the castle Žďár nad Sázavou

Dzianová, Hana January 2016 (has links)
The area is located in the southern part of the castle complex in Zdar, land in an urban zone. The original function of the castle in Zdar was a Cistercian monastery, founded 02.05.1252, which is credited with the expansion of the region. The castle is close to important UNESCO World Heritage Site - Pilgrimage church of the John of Nepomuk on the Green hill, which is a prerequisite for tourism in the region. The architectural design is based on the idea of recovery of unused buildings for the benefit of tourism on the one hand and on the other hand, it seeks to enrich local communities and the region. Suggest a feature builds on the newly created Museum of the new generation, which represents the potential of tourism. The draft proposal seeks to complete the missing and necessary functions in the area while trying to build on the tradition and the original object function.

Vodojemy - Brno, Žlutý kopec / Reservoirs - Brno, Zluty kopec (Yellow hill)

Menšíková, Kateřina Unknown Date (has links)
Master’s thesis focuses on area of historic water reservoirs on Yellow Hill, situated between streets of Tomešova and Tvrdého. They continued to supply Brno with non-potable water until 1997 and TIC is currently looking for a new way to make water reservoirs accesable and more interesting to the general public. Due to the existence of underground reservoirs the site has remained undeveloped and is covered with dense greenery. Thanks to that, the character of the place is in the context of the surrounding build-up area very unique. The proposal not only respects that, but seeks to support it. The whole area is undergoing through new landscape design and is completed by three single-storey pavilions, which with their various functions ensure the operation of the site. The historic buildings that were used to manage the underground reservoirs are renovated and integrated into the operation of the site. An important part of the design is also the solution of barrier-free access to reservoirs, their interconnection and installation of optical device - the Camery Obscury in the oldest of the reservoirs. The whole place becomes more accesible and attractive for visitors.

History of Mormon Exhibits in World Expositions

Peterson, Gerald Joseph 01 January 1974 (has links) (PDF)
The history of Mormon Exhibits in world expositions is an important chapter in the over-all accounting of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints total missionary program. In seeking more proficient means for accomplishing this task, involvement in world expositions offered a fresh opportunity to which the Church quickly responded. Finances, inexperience, non-acceptance by the world religious community and struggle for security appeared to be significant obstacles to extensive activity in early world's fairs. Eventually as the Church strengthened, it became less the national spectacle and significantly was given its first real world's fair opportunity in an exhibit sponsored by the Smithsonian Institute at the 1909 exposition. The first totally religious Mormon exhibit was at Chicago in 1933 and the first Mormon pavilion was built for the 1935 San Diego Exposition. The Church has since sponsored five pavilions and has noted that from the standpoint of number of people influenced, compared to missionary man-hours expended, there has been no greater success experienced by the Church than in recent world fair involvements.

Mediální reflexe českého pavilonu na EXPO 2015 v českém a italském tisku / The media reflection of the Czech pavilion at EXPO 2015 in Czech and Italian press

Roubíčková, Anna January 2017 (has links)
The diploma thesis is focused on the media reflection of the Czech pavilion from the recent EXPO in Czech and Italian print. The research sample comprised of 12 daily newspapers (Hospodářské noviny, Lidové noviny, Mladá fronta DNES, Právo, E15, Deník, Corriere della Sera, la Repubblica, La Stampa, Il Giornale, Il Messaggero, Il Sole 24 Ore) that were monitored from 1. 3. 2015 until 30. 11. 2015. Firstly, the content analysis of 137 articles was performed on the individual level for both states. Subsequently, the media reflections in Czech and Italian print were compared to each other. The research found out for both countries that the highest number of media outputs was in May and that one particular journal was dominant in each country. On the contrary, the primary differentiation point was the extent of interest of the media outcomes. As the focus range of the articles differed (the Czech pavilion only in contrast to multiple national pavilions), other distinctions imply, such as the main subject of the articles or the most accented news values.

Interseções entre arte e arquitetura. O caso dos pavilhões / Intersections between art and architecture. The case of pavilions

Ana Carolina Tonetti 29 April 2013 (has links)
This dissertation is focused on the study of pavilions and their relationship with the three-dimensional production - understood as installation and sculpture. Therefore, the concept of \"expanded field\", elaborated by Rosalind Krauss in the 1979 essay to encompass the transformation of sculpture from the 60\'s, is articulated with the recent shift of this same concept into the realm of architecture by some authors, namely Antony Vidler. The research is not just an investigation on the contribution of the architectural space for sculpture or, on the other hand, from sculpture to architecture, but focuses especially the line that separates them, understood as a disposition of convergence by the two disciplines which dissolves the reciprocal bonds in a interstitial production, performed by artists, architects or even both together. The pavilion has always been understood as an experimental field for architects, especially during the twentieth century when it helped consolidate the assumptions of modern architecture. Today it has gained great visibility through several programs that offer specific conditions by commissioning and assuming a unique architecture design that sets up a production untied from the binomial form-function, resulting in a self referent building whose subject is the architecture itself. From the point of view of the arts, it represents an expansion of the installation configuring a spatial whole that also implicate the building and, when taken as meta architecture, also operates as a platform for critical confrontation. The opposition on theory about the ramifications of the expanded field, as well as a research on the essential characteristics to a malleable term, are faced with a critical analysis of selected cases in three institutions gathering rather distinct characteristics - the Venice Biennale, the Institute of Contemporary Art Inhotim and the Serpentine Gallery -, and allow conclusions on this contemporary production in a disciplinary threshold.
