Οικολογική αξιολόγηση της χλωρίδας και βλάστησης της χερσονήσου των Μεθάνων

Κουγιουμουτζής, Κωνσταντίνος 01 November 2010 (has links)
Methana peninsula belongs to the South Aegean Volcanic Arc and is constituted mainly of volcanic rocks and only its southern part is calcareous. Methana's peninsular rich flora is comprised by 75 families, 316 genera and 621 taxa, 378 of which are new references, 38 endemics and 102 under protection status. For three taxa (Crocus sieberi subsp. atticus, Trigonella rechingeri και Brassica cretica subsp. aegea), by finding them on Methana peninsula, their distribution area is expanded. The therophytes and the Steno- and Eury-Mediterranean elements prevail. From the phytogeographic correlations with the islands of the South Aegean Volcanic Arc, as well as with some Ionian and West Aegean islands, Methana peninsula is found to have the highest floristic affinities with the Western Kikladhes complex. 20 habitat types were recognised and it was found that the ecological succession on Methana peninsula follows the generalised model of the ecological succession on recently created volcanic areas.

Turkey and Western intelligence cooperation, 1945-1960

Bezci, Egemen B. January 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines secret intelligence cooperation between three asymmetric partners – specifically the UK, US and Turkey – from the end of the Second World War until Turkey’s first military coup d'état on 27 May 1960. The thesis shows that our understanding of the Cold War as a binary rivalry between the two blocs is too simple an approach and obscures important characteristics of intelligence cooperation among allies. To reveal a more comprehensive analysis of intelligence cooperation, this thesis develops our understanding of it more broadly, by developing a model called ‘intelligence diplomacy’. This model explores a vital, if little understood, aspect of contemporary international relations given the prevalence of transnational threats today. Intelligence diplomacy involves negotiations and the exploitation of different aspects of joint intelligence activities, synchronized between diplomats and specialized intelligence officers. While such efforts often result in overlap between diplomats and intelligence liaison efforts, there is strong evidence that the acts of intelligence services vary from the instructions of their foreign ministries. The thesis also shows that a pragmatic approach offers states new opportunities to protect national interests, by conducting intelligence diplomacy to influence crucial areas such as nuclear weapons and to exploit cooperation in support of their own strategic imperatives. By doing so this thesis not only reveals previously-unexplored origins of secret intelligence cooperation between Turkey and the West, but also contributes to wider academic debates on the nature of the Cold War by highlighting the potential agency of weaker states in the Western Alliance.

BENTHIC FORAMINIFERAL ASSEMBLAGE ANALYSIS AS PART OF THE LARISSA PROJECT FOR BARILARI BAY, WESTERN ANTARCTIC PENINSULA

Verbanaz, Ryan 01 August 2013 (has links)
This study used Jumbo Piston Core 126, collected from the Nathaniel B. Palmer during cruise NBP10-01, to investigate environmental variability in Barilari Bay, western Antarctic Peninsula as part of the LARsen Ice Shelf System, Antarctica (LARISSA) project. A total of 107 samples were collected every 20cm from a 21.42m sediment core. Benthic foraminiferal data from Jumbo Piston Core 126 was analyzed using Principal Component (PC), Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA), and cluster analyses to assist in the Holocene oceanographic and climatic interpretation of Barilari Bay. The first three principal components explain 79.5% of the variance in the foraminiferal abundance data. PC1 comprises 49.6% of the variance and represents the Bulimina aculeata assemblage. PC2 and PC3 explain 16.3% and 13.6% of the variance and characterize the Fursenkoina fusiformis and Pseudobolivina antarctica assemblages, respectively. F. fusiformis assemblage represents the presence of a less saline water mass associated with ice shelf decay. The agglutinated P. antarctica assemblage is indicative of Hyper Saline Shelf Water (HSSW). TheB. aculeata assemblage is associated with Upper Circumpolar Deep Water (UCDW) (Ishman and Domack, 1994) Sediments from ~1100-950 calibrated years Before Present (cal. yr BP) are characterized by theB. aculeata assemblage, indicating the presence of UCDW. At ~950 cal. yr BP the UCDW receded coincident with glacial conditions observed during what is interpreted as the Little Ice Age. The ~950-350 cal. yr BP interval represents glacial conditions interpreted from the high PC scores of the P. antarctica assemblage and low foraminiferal abundances due to HSSW and a high sedimentation rate from glacial runoff. Intermittent pulses of UCDW are observed in the 950-350 cal. yr BP interval, expressed by the PC peaks in the B. aculeata assemblage. Between ~300 and 100 cal. yr BP the middle of the fjord was dominated by the F. fusiformis assemblage, suggesting ice shelf decay and open marine conditions. At ~50 cal. yr BP UCDW progressed back into Barilari Bay and is currently the dominant water mass.

The nationalistic visions and the educational policy of Ioannis Kapodistrias within the framework of the enlightenment, 1800-1827

Filippou, Fotini A. 25 May 2009 (has links)
M.A. / The first section relates to the period of the 18th century Europe, during which the Enlightenment movement matured, followed by the description of the process of how the new philosophy of the Enlightenment affected the united orthodox countries of the Balkans. The reaffirmation which these ideas brought to the Mediterranean in the context of intellectual, social and political life, contributed to the formation of the Modern Greek Enlightenment period, which resulted in the creation of the modern political Greek state. In the second section, the aims of the Education are presented, in the state of the Hellenic Education is shown during the period of the Modern Greek Enlightenment. The education struggle, together with other sectors, prepared the Hellenes, intellectually, morally, and socially to undertake the liberation struggle of 1821. The third section deals with the life of Ioannis Kapodistrias with reference to his youth studies and early activities. Thereafter, follows and analysis of the political, social and intellectual state of the Ionian Islands during the period of the Modern Greek Enlightenment. The free Eptanisa State, where Ioannis Kapodistrias revealed his political aptitude and diplomatic abilities, is also examined. Particular emphasis is given to Ioannis Kapodistrias’s efforts and endeavours for education in the Ionian State. This effort culminated in the establishment and functioning of the Tenedos College. The section ends with the departure of Ioannis Kapodistrias for Petroupolis (Saint Petersburg). The fourth section initially deals with the development of the diplomatic career of Ioannis Kapodistrias in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Russia, which was interrupted by the Greek Revolution and after unsuccessfully exhausting all efforts to involve tsar Alexandros I in action against Turkey. After his final resignation in 1827, Ioannis Kapodistrias accepts Greece’s appeal to involve himself actively in the revolution. The fourth section includes, as well, Kapodistrias’s educational policy and activities during this period. This valuable developments result in the establishment of the Filomoussos Society of Vienna whose goal was to educate the Hellenic youth of the time and also to emphasize Greece’s national problem. The fifth section refers to the nationalistic visions of Ioannis Kapodistrias regarding the political restoration of the Hellenes, as well as to his educational policies, his legacy to the Hellenic Nation and the recognition of his contribution.

Neolithic meshworks : a multi-scalar approach to understanding social relations within the LBK

Giddens, Heather January 2016 (has links)
This thesis explores the different scales of sociality (or social interaction) found within the LBK through the lens of a broadly meshwork-based perspective. It evaluates the hypotheses that people in the LBK lived in and recognised multiple levels of 'community', that these different communities overlapped, resulting in negotiation and possibly conflict; and that membership of these communities was potentially open and fluid, varying according to season, task or personal preference. With the help of meshwork-thinking, I explore the social relationships that helped to define the LBK. In doing so, I demonstrate that this dynamic, multi-dimensional approach can offer a new perspective on understanding the degree of homogeneity and variation within the LBK tradition. The core of the thesis is divided into three case studies, each concentrating on a specific scale of analysis. The first case study focuses on social interaction at the household scale and considers the emergence of individual households, household complexes and co-operative groups of households within the Merzbach and Schlangengraben valleys. The second case study explores the inter-play between competing family and clan/lineage identities at the scale of the settlement cluster or micro-region. The third case study zooms out to the regional scale of the Lower Rhine basin, tracing more geographically spread patterns in the material culture as well as interaction with non-LBK groups beyond the loess regions. Calling on these cases studies, I also consider how scale was experienced in the LBK.

Academics' experience of and perceptions of the role of the academic library in research at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology

Kleinveldt, Lynn January 2009 (has links)
Magister Bibliothecologiae - MBibl / The study investigates the role of CPUT libraries in supporting research and how academics perceive this role. CPUT is a new university of technology and aims at improving its research record. Research is crucial to South Africa to develop economically, socially and to compete globally. Research is fundamental to the existence of universities. Universities of technology libraries face the challenge of providing support for research. Previously the colleges / technikon libraries provided support for undergraduate and underdiplomates only. Today, they have to provide support for researchers at masters, doctoral, and post-doctoral levels. Questions arising from the research problem are: • How much and what kind of research is being conducted by academic staff at CPUT? • What programmes does the library have to meet the needs of the researcher? • How do academic researchers use the library at present? • What do researchers see as the inhibiting and encouraging factors for their research with regard to library services? • How do they perceive the role of the library in their research? There were two phases in the research design: an in-depth interview with the recently appointed Research Librarian at CPUT libraries whose job it is to plan and implement library support services to researchers and to run the Research Information Support Centre (RISC) and an electronic survey of researchers on the academic staff of CPUT. The purpose of the interview was to explore the library plans for research support. Nine themes were highlighted during the interview with the Research Librarian for example: • Librarians should be researchers, research support is a whole-library responsibility • Postgraduate degree research is the core function of RISC. The purpose of the survey was to investigate what researchers need and want from the library as well as their perceptions and attitudes towards the role of the library in research. A questionnaire consisting of mixed questions (qualitative and quantitative) was sent by email to all 602 academics at CPUT across eight campuses. The aim was to achieve a representative sample across all six faculties. The final sample was 102 with one faculty underrepresented. The study made the following findings: • 52% of respondents strongly agree that research is essential to their job and that CPUT needs to build a stronger research culture. • PhD and Masters degree research dominates. • For a University of Technology the low proportion of industrial-sponsored research is perhaps surprising. • The average time percentage spent in a working year on research is 23.4%. Several comments in the final open-ended question point to heavy workloads. • 65% of respondents have not published any articles in accredited journals in the past three years. • 57% of respondents do not agree that they source information directly from the Internet and so no longer need the library. • Most respondents, 95 of the 102, make use of the library for research support. However, RISC is not their number one choice for research support. RISC is perhaps underused. The three library services being extensively used by respondents are eresources, borrowing print resources and Inter-library loan services. Quite a high number of respondents, 27 (28%), are undecided whether the Digital Knowledge Repository at CPUT, a library project, is important to them. However, comments in the final open-ended question indicated that respondents are unaware of this service. • The number one on researchers’ wish lists for library research support services is to be kept informed of new research in their field – thus the traditional current awareness services of libraries. • The ICT infrastructure has been highlighted as critical. The main reason for low rating of the library is that the network / databases are too slow. • There seems to be fairly strong doubt that librarians have adequate subject knowledge to support research with 27% agreeing that librarians lack subject knowledge. • The cross tabulations suggest that there might well be some differences among faculties in terms of responses. But statistical tests of significance would be needed to confirm this suggestion. The study had a few limitations. The survey left the researcher with some questions. It only focused on one institution. Postgraduate students who are not staff members were excluded from this study. Some of the recommendations coming from the study are: • ICT infrastructure needs to be improved • Library current awareness and alerting services must be improved • The Digital Knowledge research repository must be made more visible to academics • Document delivery and inter-library loan services should be made more efficient and faster • Collection development processes need to be geared more closely to the needs of researchers. The aim of the project was to gather information for CPUT libraries to develop further their services to form a part of the research culture. The study might make academics and researchers aware of the potential role the library plays in contributing to their research needs. If South Africa is to progress to a knowledge society, its universities will have to increase research output. Universities of Technology have a particularly important role to play as South Africa urgently needs scientific and technological research. Therefore their libraries have a special responsibility to support their efforts to improve their research culture and production. It is hoped that this study will contribute some insight into how University of Technologylibraries might enhance their research support. / South Africa

A study of the employers attitudes towards matters stipulated in section 84 of the labour relations act no 66 of 1995 and how those relate to the objectives of the Bargaining Council for hairdressing trade, Cape Peninsula

Barends, Keith January 2010 (has links)
Magister Philosophiae - MPhil / The research conducted has been undertaken to engage the stakeholders to explore the possibility of establishing workplace forums. The gains of workplace forums with respect to sharing decision making is a distinct advantage both business and labour seemingly do not realise because of a continued resolve to negotiate conditions of service annually exclusively. The research was undertaken by designing an interview questionnaire for distribution. The population for this research includes a cross section of employers from the industry in the Western Cape, parties to the Hairdressing Beauty and Cosmetology Bargaining Council, the Employers Organisation and the Employees Organisation or Trade Union. The criteria set for the questionnaire anticipate responses of respondents to the challenges before and after the possible incorporation of section 84 of the Act Finally the research results indicate that the parties to a collective agreement in this industry still gravitate towards distributive collective bargaining by negotiating salaries, wages and conditions of employment in Bargaining Councils. / South Africa
