Deimling, Moacir Francisco January 2014 (has links)
Competitiveness has been a recurrent theme in the companies field for a long time, but it has acquired a greater highlight as markets opened up to wide global trade. Previously discussed at the unit level, competitiveness can not be assured anymore only for the companies abilities and competence. The current key-note concerning competitiveness considers the effort of the whole value chain employed to attend the final consumer needs for its products and/or for its produced services. Some models were developed to attend value chains measuring needs, considering the several levels of indicators, both strategical as operational and tactical. However, there are still gaps to be fulfilled in the search for more complete models. In this sense, this study developed a structure of performance indicators to assess value chains performance, focusing specifically on the furniture field in the West region of Santa Catarina. To accomplish that, this study employed several methods of data collection, such as interviews, survey, and the Delphi Method, aiming at structuring a set of indicators that could assess the performance of the furniture field value chain. The current study is characterized as exploratory with a qualitative approach and also a case study. As results, the main performance indicators used to assess value chains were identified in the related literature. Next, they were grouped and analyzed by experts concerning their importance to performance measuring. Later, they were assessed by companies of two furniture areas in what concerns their importance. At last, in order to validate the proposed model, the performance of indicators was assessed in two focal companies, as well as the main actors of their value chains.

Orientador: Orlando Fontes Lima Júnior / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Engenharia Civil, Arquitetura e Urbanismo / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-24T13:59:27Z (GMT). The global economy has caused significant changes over the past decades, especially in the areas of international trade and business production. These changes in global production increase the complexity of the supply chain, reinforcing the notion that logistics strategies and practices become key elements for companies. The creation and use of logistics platforms have become an alternative to the current level of dynamism and competitiveness. A logistics platform (LP), which is the place where the different actors in the supply chain may be all in the same physical location - and thus enable the occurrence of greater synergy between the various logistics processes - may allow an improvement in the level of logistics customer service as well as provide a competitive edge for the continuity of these companies in the market they operate. Additionally, logistics platforms can contribute with governments interested in the economic and social development of a given region. An important aspect to be taken into account in the logistics platforms (LPs) relates to governance, because there are many actors in these logistical arrangements and many LPs include the presence of a large number of participating companies that seek greater efficacy and efficiency in their operations. The general objective of this research was to propose a framework of indicators that may be used in the governance of logistics platforms to assist the management of these ventures and support their activities, boosting their performance and collaborate with the proposed objectives. Regarding its nature, this methodology was classified as applied research, with a qualitative and quantitative approach. With respect to the objectives the research was classified as exploratory, following the assumptions of the triangulation method, in which the technical procedures used were a literature review from a data base, survey research applied to experts from Brazil, Europe, Asia, and North America and a multiple-case study. As a result of the theoretical backgroundresearched a set of performance indicators in the business and logistics environment was identified, which was submitted to experts¿ analysis and assessment. 41 performance indicators were considered to be highly relevant by respondents. After the literature review and the surveys, the indicators were validated by a group of executives of logistics platforms in Spain. In their opinion a total of 27 indicators were considered relevant and may be used in the governance of logistics platforms. This doctoral thesis was developed in the format of articles in accordance with the CPPG Resolution-ECFEC-0622013 (FEC Deliberation Congregation 106/2013 of May 6, 2013) of the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) Civil Engineering Program Postgraduate Committee of the Civil Engineering, Architecture and Urbanism School. The thesis comprised a total of 13 articles, of which: eight were published in national and international journals and congresses, two were accepted and await publication in the annals of an international congress and one was submitted to a national transportation journal. The last two articles developed at the end of the research will be soon submitted to two journals (A1 and A2) addressing the knowledge area of this research. A final contribution of this study is its results, which can be used as hypotheses for the development of new observations and applications on the use of performance indicators in the governance of logistics platforms / Doutorado / Transportes / Doutor em Engenharia Civil

Defining a Process for Statistical Analysis of Vulnerability Management using KPI

Engqvist, Markus, Mori Soto, Karen January 2017 (has links)
In todays connected society, with rapidly advancing technology, there is an interest in offering technical services in our day to day life. Since these services are used to handle sensitive information and money, there are demands for increased information security. Sometimes errors occur in these systems that risk the security for both parties. These systems should be secured to maintain secure operations even though vulnerabilities occur. Outpost24 is one company that specializes in vulnerability management. By using their scanning tool OUTSCAN™, Outpost24 can identify vulnerabilities in network components, such as firewalls, switches, printers, devices, servers, workstations and other computer systems. These results are then stored in a database. Within this study, the authors will work together with Outpost24 towards this data. The goal is to define a process for generation of vulnerability reports for the company. The process will perform a statistical analysis of the data and present the findings. To solve the task a report was created, during which the process was documented. The work began with a background study into Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), in which the most common security KPIs were identified from similar works. A tool was also developed to help with the analysis. This resulted in a statistical analysis using Outpost24’s dataset. By presenting the data formatted by the KPIs, trends could be identified. This showed an overall trend of increasing vulnerabilities and the necessity for organizations to spend resources towards security. The KPIs offer other possibilities, such as creating a baseline for security evaluation using data from one year. In the future, one could use the KPIs to compare how the security situation has changed.

Information Visualization of Performance Indicators for Drones in Urban Areas : A Complementary Module for the Visual Research Tool UTM50

Kettisen, Anders January 2022 (has links)
Drones in low-altitude air space at a large scale is a new and ongoing field of research and there is a high possibility that we during the coming decades will see a rise in both commercial and state-driven drone activities in this space, especially in urban areas. This will require new ways in which to think and operate all air traffic management around the world. To support the research and realization of this, this master thesis will investigate a way to visualize performance indicators for drones that are related to key performance indicators used in air traffic today. This is done by researching commonly used performance metrics for air traffic and finding a suitable program that can visualize these in different graph types often used in information visualization, to build and evaluate an interactive dashboard that lets a user explore the performance data. The drone data used in this work is retrieved from a drone simulation program where delivery drones act between start, delivery and endpoints. /

Network Performance Management Using Application-centric Key Performance Indicators

McGill, Susan 01 January 2007 (has links)
The Internet and intranets are viewed as capable of supplying "Anything, Anywhere, Anytime" and e-commerce, e-government, e-community, and military C4I are now deploying many and varied applications to serve their needs. Network management is currently centralized in operations centers. To assure customer satisfaction with the network performance they typically plan, configure and monitor the network devices to insure an excess of bandwidth, that is overprovision. If this proves uneconomical or if complex and poorly understood interactions of equipment, protocols and application traffic degrade performance creating customer dissatisfaction, another more application-centric, way of managing the network will be needed. This research investigates a new qualitative class of network performance measures derived from the current quantitative metrics known as quality of service (QOS) parameters. The proposed class of qualitative indicators focuses on utilizing current network performance measures (QOS values) to derive abstract quality of experience (QOE) indicators by application class. These measures may provide a more user or application-centric means of assessing network performance even when some individual QOS parameters approach or exceed specified levels. The mathematics of functional analysis suggests treating QOS performance values as a vector, and, by mapping the degradation of the application performance to a characteristic lp-norm curve, a qualitative QOE value (good/poor) can be calculated for each application class. A similar procedure could calculate a QOE node value (satisfactory/unsatisfactory) to represent the service level of the switch or router for the current mix of application traffic. To demonstrate the utility of this approach a discrete event simulation (DES) test-bed, in the OPNET telecommunications simulation environment, was created modeling the topology and traffic of three semi-autonomous networks connected by a backbone. Scenarios, designed to degrade performance by under-provisioning links or nodes, are run to evaluate QOE for an access network. The application classes and traffic load are held constant. Future research would include refinement of the mathematics, many additional simulations and scenarios varying other independent variables. Finally collaboration with researchers in areas as diverse as human computer interaction (HCI), software engineering, teletraffic engineering, and network management will enhance the concepts modeled.

Web-based Performance Benchmarking Data Collection and Preliminary Analysis for Drinking Water and Wastewater Utility

Rathor, Ankur 12 January 2013 (has links)
High-quality drinking water and wastewater systems are essential to public health, business, and quality of life in the United States. Even though the current performance of these systems is moderate, the concern is about the future performance. Planning can be done for improvement once the current performance of utilities is evaluated, and areas with a scope of improvement are identified. Benchmarking and performance evaluation are key components in the process of continuous improvement for utility's performance. Benchmarking helps utilities make policies and programmatic decisions that reduce operational expenses and increase productivity by understanding areas of underperformance, understanding customer needs, developing future plans, and setting goals. This study establishes a strong case for implementing benchmarking methodologies among utilities to evaluate and improve performance. There are many initiatives on performance benchmarking of utilities but a few of them focuses on one or few area of performance. There are a few initiatives which use subjective indicators. Additionally, consultants visit the utilities for performance evaluation. This research focuses on creating a web-based benchmarking platform for performance evaluation using holistic and quantitative indicators. Practical and robust methodologies are used and the research presents the current performance comparisons among utilities for areas that impact overall utility's performance. Web based benchmarking consists of two major parts -- data collection and result visualization. A major contribution from this study is the creation of an online performance benchmarking database. With time more data will be collected which will provide utilities an access to a better database for performance evaluation. The future work in this research will be analyzing the data and results for each participant for each set of indicators, and finding possible reasons for under performance, followed by suggesting solutions for improvement using the best practices. / Master of Science

Key performance indicators for the evaluation of an air navigation service providers' safety management system

Ehliar, Lars-Johan, Wagner, Tobias January 2016 (has links)
Safety is the main concern of the aviation industry. All Air Navigation Service Providers must have a Safety Management System (SMS) which states how safety is handled, promoted and prioritized. By developing Key Performance indicators (KPIs), it is possible to quantify the effectiveness of a SMS, discover potential flaws and improvement measures. This thesis identifies principles behind the SMS, the development of KPIs and suggest potential KPIs for the Swedish air navigation service provider LFVs’ SMS. A literature study was performed and organisation specific documents were analysed to develop potential KPIs within the areas timely compliance with international obligations, competency and adoption and sharing of best practices based on an EASA questionnaire. This work presents a set of 27 performance indicators and recommends 6 as potential KPIs for the three areas together. The KPIs are developed specifically for LFV but could be applicable for other organisations with similar SMS structure and processes. They should be analysed within the organisation and, potentially, have thresholds set before implementation.
