Taint

Cheryl Jorgensen Unknown Date (has links)
Abstracts THE TAINT This is a memoir of Ray “Poss” Ide, a man who has carried the taint of a horrifying crime since he was seventeen years old─a crime he claims he did not commit. The crime was the rape of a fourteen-year-old girl. The Taint looks at the time leading up to his conviction for rape, including the years he spent in Westbrook Boys’ Reformatory and Boggo Road Gaol as a minor, and then his sentence served in NSW gaols with such inmates as Stephen Bradley, the man who kidnapped and murdered Graham Thorne, and the bizarre but rather likeable Dave Scanlan, known for his exploits as “the Kingsgrove Slasher”. In prison, Scanlan encouraged him to become an elite sportsman and released, Poss was recruited by Canterbury Eels football team; but just on the point of making a name for himself in Sydney, someone discovered that he had been gaoled for rape, and humiliated, he left the team. He moved back home to Queensland via Grafton, NSW (where he met and later married the Jacaranda Queen) and continued his sporting career, but never again in the Big League. He became the Manager of the Waterside Workers’ Club and helped prevent a turf war between the Wharfies and members of the Painters and Dockers. Poss is now working with lawyer Robert Bax to have his case re-opened. He believes his story to be a cautionary tale for young men. It is a chronicle of social change, including the sexual revolution of the sixties, the confrontations with “the demons” in the streets of Brisbane during the Joh era of Bible-bashing fundamentalism and police corruption. It’s a story about what really went on behind closed doors in institutions where vulnerable children were preyed upon, in gaols where men were expected to become beasts. It is a story of how the taint of a terrible crime affected a man’s whole life. “QUESTIONS OF OWNERSHIP” Writing someone else’s story can be an ethical minefield─especially regarding questions of ownership. Who owns the story, the subject or the author? The easy answer to this is the subject owns the story and the author the text, but on closer examination this may not necessarily be so. Then there are those other stakeholders who claim ownership of story: people who embrace a narrative because of its similarity to their own lives. Published stories about institutional abuse have resonated for adults who as children were placed into the care of churches or the state. Another kind of ownership is claimed by readers who accept a version of a story and dismiss any counter-story as being invalid. What I call the “Plath Phenomenon” is an example of this. I will examine these kinds of ownership of story with particular reference to the work of Janet Malcolm on biography and then will look at gaps and silences in “official” stories, those created in police stations and courtrooms.

Introduction: gastric bypass Roux-en-Y laparoscopic (DGYRL) is one of the main treatments for obesity and comorbidities. However, it can cause complications such as internal hernia (HI), whose early diagnosis is hampered by the lack of specificity of clinical picture. Objective: To evaluate the predictive clinical factors for diagnosis and early surgical correction of HI after DGYRL. Methods: This was a prospective study of the type of cross-sectional observational cohort. 38 patients were analyzed with the DGYRL HI possible frame, with diffuse and postprandial abdominal pain. This sample consisted of 28 men and 10 women, with a mean age of 37.5 years and body mass index (BMI) equal to 39,6kg / m2 before DGYRL.Diante the nonspecific clinical picture of abdominal pain, and after they are ruling out other causes of abdominal pain through laboratory tests and imaging, was nominated exploratory laparoscopy as a diagnostic and therapeutic method for the correction of HI. Results: Exploratory laparoscopy was performed in all patients, with mean operative time of 45 minutes, and the herniated Petersen was confirmed in 22 of them (38/22 -%?). (PLACE OTHER DATA OF RESULTS - see tables of results) In seven patients, the herniated loop showed signs of vascular suffering, and in two patients, the handle was already showing irreversible ischemia, requiring resection of the affected area. Wound infection was observed in four patients. Conclusion: The presence of recurrent abdominal pain, with or without abdominal distention, with or without vomiting, is one of the main predictors for the diagnosis of HI after DGYR. Patients operated at an early stage, even with negative imaging for this disease, have benefited from rapid and simple procedures without complications and without conversion to laparotomy surgery.

Jenská pedagogika / Jena pedagogy

Šimková, Jana January 2013 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with alternative pedagogical concept of Peter Petersen, the jena pedagogy. It describes the topic at first on the theoretical level, in the next section is it concentrated on its practical application in Czech and foreign schools. In the theoretical part deals the diploma thesis with historical background of the emergence of alternative pedagogical trends in general, then is targeted at some specific alternative directions and the most attention is devoted to jena pedagogy. The diploma thesis maps the first attempt of foundation a jena school in the Czech Republic, where in the 90s were opened several experimental classes with jena elements at a primary school in Poděbrady. It monitors the circumstances of preparation of this initiative, its progress and the situation leading to its early demise. The result of the analysis is identification the potential benefits and risks of jena system of education for our school system.

Significant Influences in the Composition of Hendrik Hofmeyr's Song Cycle, Alleenstryd

Cupido, Conroy Alan 08 1900 (has links)
The poet of this cycle, Sydney Vernon Petersen, was a man who faced great adversity during Apartheid. The title of this cycle, Alleenstryd, is an Afrikaans term for 'a struggle alone.' Petersen was of mixed heritage or "Coloured" and born in South Africa in 1914. He died in 1987. His most important works in Afrikaans poetry were published between 1948 and 1965. This cycle specifically focuses on the relationship between the poet and his community, the isolation he endured within that community, the depths of despair he felt and how he overcame those obstacles to finally achieve a sense of self-worth. This group of poems, first published as an anthology by Tafelberg Press in 1979, became the source of inspiration for the composer Hendrik Hofmeyr. The purpose of this research is to identify the significant social, political and musical influences on the composer which contributed to the composition of Alleenstryd (1996), especially the significance of his self-imposed exile. Also, the Afrikaans language, a derivative of 17th century Dutch, is a language dear to its speakers but not widely accessible or familiar to most other nations. Hopefully this research will provide more information and make the language, its composers and the story of the dark history surrounding Apartheid and specifically the individuals who excelled through hardship, available to more people.

Implementation of an Arc Model for MV Network with Resonance Earthing

Almulla, Muhannad January 2020 (has links)
The most common fault type in electric power systems is the line to groundfault. In this type of faults, an electrical arc is usually developed. The thesispresents a mathematical model that describes the behavior of the arc during afault. The arc model has been verified based on real and simulated tests thatwere conducted on a system that has resonant earthing coil.In addition, two studies have been conducted on the same verified system. The first studied was implemented to see the effect of detuning the resonantearthing coil at different levels. It was noted that detuning the coil affected ACand the DC components in the arc faults. Also, the detuning affected the arcextinction. The second study has been looking at the effects of implementing a parallelresistor to the resonant earthing coil. The tests have been conducted usingdifferent set values of the resistor. In some of the studied cases and during thetesting period, the resistor has affected the self-extinguish behavior of the arc.
