A description of the importance of public school physical education as perceived by students, teachers, parents and administrators

Givler, Jill Isaacs 01 January 1990 (has links)
Physical Education teachers, non-physical education teachers, administrators, parents and students were surveyed regarding their perceptions of six basic issues in physical education. The purpose of the study was to establish a foundation of systematically collected information providing insight into determining the status of public school physical education. To do this, the Delphi Technique was employed to gain group consensus on the following issues: goals of P.E.; departmental organization; curriculum; comparative subject matter importance; grading procedures; and graduation/participation requirements. Descriptive statements are provided regarding the group consensus results on each issue. Differentiation between elementary, junior high and senior high results are reported where appropriate. Implications for physical educators and recommendations for further study are discussed.

BODY IMAGE, BODY DISSATISFACTION, DIETING AND DISORDERED EATING AND EXERCISE BEHAVIOURS OF TRAINEE PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHERS: INVESTIGATION AND INTERVENTION

Yager, Karen M January 2008 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / University students are known to have a high prevalence of body dissatisfaction, dieting and disordered eating and exercise behaviours. Those enrolled in food and exercise related degree areas have been found to be particularly vulnerable. Part 1 of this study compared the body image, body dissatisfaction, dieting, disordered eating and exercise behaviours of first year male and female trainee physical education [PE; N = 295] teachers and undergraduates enrolled in non food and exercise related degree areas [Non PE; N = 207]. Male and female PE participants had a lower body image and higher body dissatisfaction and were significantly more likely to be dieting and engaging in disordered eating behaviours than Non PE participants. These findings provide empirical evidence of anecdotal suspicions that trainee physical education teachers are susceptible to body image problems and eating disorders; and create a demand for for intervention programs to improve the body image, body dissatisfaction, dieting and disordered eating and exercise behaviours of this population. Part 2 of this study involved the development of a dissonance and self esteem based (Intervention 1) and a dissonance, and media literacy based intervention that built self esteem and used computer technologies (Intervention 2) to be implemented into trainee physical education teachers’ [N= 170] undergraduate training. Both interventions were successful in improving the body image, and disordered eating behaviours of trainee PE teachers compared to a control group; which suggests that the inclusion of intervention programs in trainee teacher’s undergraduate training is both feasible and effective. Further research should investigate the effects of intervention programs to improve body image and eating behaviours among trainee physical education teachers; and male university students. The development of standardised measures and approaches toward the improvement of body image, body dissatisfaction and disordered eating and exercise behaviours that are specifically designed for males is also encouraged.

Examining the influence of physical and health education on ontario grade 9 students' physical activity intentions and behaviours

Reid, MARY-ANNE 26 June 2014 (has links)
Insufficient physical activity and a sedentary lifestyle are major contributors to health risks for Canadian youth. Adolescents, particularly girls, tend to experience major drop-offs in physical activity levels during high school. However, there is minimal research examining the extent to which Physical and Health Education (PHE) courses promote physical activity and mitigate against this decline. Grounded in the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), the purpose of this quantitative short-term longitudinal study is two-pronged: (a) examine the effectiveness of Grade 9 PHE for 197 students’ reports of TPB constructs, physical activity intentions, and physical activity behaviour; and (b) explore the utility of TPB in predicting physical activity intentions and behaviour. For the first set of research questions, results were analyzed using 2 (time: Time Point 1 [T1], Time Point 2 [T2]) x 2 (condition: in PHE/not in PHE) x 2 (TPB status: higher or lower than the mean) MANCOVAs with boys and girls examined separately. There was no effect of PHE over time. There was no interaction among time, condition, and TPB status. There was a significant effect of condition for girls in PHE, with Attitude and Physical Activity Behaviour higher at both time points. For the second set of research questions, results were analyzed using multiple linear regressions to examine TPB in a Grade 9 setting. Findings provided support for the theoretical structure of the TPB in a Grade 9 context, with the three TPB constructs accounting for a minimum of 59% of Intentions, and a minimum of 25% of Behaviour for boys and girls. Attitude was the strongest independent predictor of Intentions with Intentions and Attitude the strongest predictors of Behaviour. PHE teachers should potentially focus attention on changing attitudes for this age group, given the importance of this construct. / Thesis (Master, Education) -- Queen's University, 2014-06-26 15:29:51.422

Akademiskt ledarskap : Studenters upplevelser av ledarskap och dess innebörd inom en idrottslärarutbildning / Academic Leadership : Students´experiences of leadership and its meaning within a physical and health teacher education

Starby, Jacob, Nurmela, Filip January 2023 (has links)
Teachers are one of the most important school-related factors regarding students' academic learning. Academic leadership within the teaching profession has an essential part in students' school results according to previousresearch. Knowledgeofleadership, anditsmeaning, createstheneed to acquire more knowledge about how academic leadership is educated in a PE teacher education. This study's purpose was to investigate PE student teachers ́ experiences about what knowledges, and its meaning, of leadership has been acquired and is missing in the PE education. Qualitative interview study was the research method which includes a semi-structured interview guide and there were seven interviews conducted in this study. After the implementation of the interviews a thematic content analysis was conducted of the participants' responses that generated identification of themes and categories that answered the study's purpose and questions. The result of the study was that acquired knowledge in leadership within the PE teacher education are professional knowledge, didactics and outdoor education. It appeared in the results that knowledge in leadership that is missing in the PE teacher education are interpersonal skills, intrapersonal skills, binding of skills and dedication. The conclusion of this study explains that knowledge of leadership, and its meaning, needs to be included in future research within two different levels: institutional level and teaching level.
