Experience and Pictorial Representation: Wollheim's Seeing-in and Merleau-Ponty's Perceptual PhenomenologyGardner, Jason 22 June 2005 (has links)
Contemporary aesthetics includes a project directed at understanding the nature of pictorial representation. Three types of theories enjoy recent favor. One explains pictorial representation by way of resemblance or experienced resemblance between the picture and what it represents. A second employs interpretation: the spectator looks at a picture and interprets conventionally determined symbols found therein to mean what it represents. The third describes pictorial representation as a matter of experience. On this approach, when the spectator looks at a picture she has a visual experience of the thing represented.
Key components of representation include the representation bearing artifact and the human activity that produces it. An adequate account of pictorial representation must neglect neither. Theories focusing on resemblance fail to account for the human role in representation so that a picture may represent only what it can resemble. Theories making interpretation of conventional symbols the key fail to account for the role visible properties play in grounding representation. Wollheim's experience based theory, however, unifies the visible properties of the artifact and the intentions of the artist in a single experience, called seeing-in, whereby a spectator sees in a picture what an artist intends to represent.
Wollheim fails to specify just how visible properties of the artifact ground seeing-in. His account of seeing-in raises other curiosities as well. These issues can be dealt with if we apply phenomenological concepts developed by Merleau-Ponty in his Phenomenology of Perception to our experience of pictures as a method of enriching Wollheim's account of seeing-in. / Master of Arts

Studies in knowledge representation : modeling change - the frame problem : pictures and wordsJanlert, Lars-Erik January 1985 (has links)
In two studies, the author attempts to develop a general symbol theoretical approach to knowledge representation. The first study, Modeling change - the frame problem, critically examines the - so far unsuccessful - attempts to solve the notorious frame problem. By discussing and analyzing a number of related problems - the prediction problem, the revision problem, the qualification problem, and the book-keeping problem - the frame problem is distinguished as the problem of finding a representational form permitting a changing, complex world to be efficiently and adequately represented. This form, it is argued, is dictated by the metaphysics of the problem world, the fundamental form of the symbol system we humans use in rightly characterizing the world. In the second study, Pictures and words, the symbol theoretical approach is made more explicit. The subject Is the distinction between pictorial (non-linguistic, non-propositional, analogical, "direct") representation and verbal (linguistic, propositional) representation, and the further implications of this distinction. The study focuses on pictorial representation, which has received little attention compared to verbal representation. Observations, ideas, and theories in AI, cognitive psychology, and philosophy are critically examined. The general conclusion is that there is as yet no cogent and mature theory of pictorial representation that gives good support to computer applications. The philosophical symbol theory of Nelson Goodman is found to be the most thoroughly developed and most congenial with the aims and methods of AI. Goodman's theory of pictorial representation, however, in effect excludes computers from the use of pictures. In the final chapter, an attempt is made to develop Goodman's analysis of pictures further turning it into a theory useful to AI. The theory outlined builds on Goodman's concept of exemplification. The key idea is that a picture is a model of a description that has the depicted object as its standard model. One consequence Is that pictorial and verbal forms of representation are seen less as competing alternatives than as complementary forms of representation mutually supporting and depending on each other. / digitalisering@umu

Previous issue date: 2009 / We had some questions that have driven our investigation: (i) What are the mechanisms that are involved in the metaphorical/literal meaning generation of the idiomatic expressions (IE) and its pictorial representation (PR)?, (ii) What is the role of the conceptual metaphor/blending in the metaphorical/literal meaning generation between the two modalities (verbal IE and non-verbal PR)? And (iii) What is the role of the congruent projections of each modality in the metaphorical/literal meaning generation? To answer these questions we had a main objective: describe the internal structure of the conceptual integration network of the mechanisms responsible for the metaphorical/literal meaning generation of the idioms and its PRs and some specific objectives: (i) to describe, by use of a model, the internal structure of conceptual integration network and of the mechanisms involved in the generation of meaning of IEs and their PRs; (ii) to describe the figurative and/or literal process that interferes in the meaning generation and (iii) propose a model that demonstrates the internal structure of the IE meaning generation and its PRs in the conceptual integration network.. The following works had been selected to compose the research corpus: (a) A vaca foi pro brejo – the cow went to the swamp (FERNANDES, 2001) and (b) Pequeno Dicionário de Expressões Idiomáticas (ZOCCHIO; BALARDIN, 1999). From the work by Fernandes (2001), the expressions (1) “o bom cabrito não berra”, (2) “não ter papas na língua” e (3) “só falam abobrinhas” were selected; from Zocchio and Balardin (1999), the IE “engolir sapo”. In order to reach our objectives, we based our research on the postulates of the Theory of Conceptual Integration (FAUCONNIER; TURNER, 2003) and on Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980, 1999) Theory of Conceptual Metaphor. With the analyses as a starting point, the designed model of the internal structure of conceptual integration networks revealed that the interrelation between the IE and its PR allows a multiplicity of projections which contribute to the generation of meaning. The model also allows the expansion of conceptual relationships, generating different blends, so that the image, in terms of its verbal representation, may be partially or totally congruent. The degree of (in)congruence between the literal and the idiomatic is, in a continuum, decisive for the determination of the blended result. It was possible to show that there is a close connection between one modality and the other. This suggests that the nature of the processing of an IE may have a metaphorical or literal basis. Still based on the analyses, our model of blends proved to be efficient to demonstrate the internal organization of the nets in the generation of meaning, from the interrelation between verbal and non-verbal representation. In the designing of the networks, the various creative and imaginative projections come into play, which allows for new configurations of meaning to be successively (re)constructed. / As questões que nos levaram à investigação do tema foram: (i) Quais são os mecanismos envolvidos na geração do sentido metafórico/literal das expressões idiomáticas (EIs) e suas desconstruções pictóricas (DPs)? (ii) Qual é o papel da metáfora/mesclagem conceptual na geração do sentido metafórico/literal entre as duas modalidades (EI verbal e DP não-verbal)? e (iii) Qual é o papel das projeções congruentes e não congruentes de cada uma das modalidades na geração do sentido metafórico/literal? Para responder a esses questionamentos tivemos como objetivo principal descrever a estrutura interna da rede de integração conceptual dos mecanismos responsáveis pela geração do sentido metafórico/literal das EIs e suas DPs e como objetivos específicos: (i) descrever e propor um modelo que revele a arquitetura interna da rede de integração conceptual envolvida nos processos de geração do sentido entre as duas modalidades (verbal e não-verbal), (ii) descrever como processos de figuratividade e/ou literalidade participam nas modalidades verbal e não-verbal e interferem na geração do significado e (iii) propor um modelo que revele a estrutura interna do percurso gerativo do sentido das EIS e suas DPs nas redes de integração conceptual. Para composição do corpus da pesquisa foram selecionadas as seguintes obras: (a) A vaca foi pro brejo – the cow went to the swamp (FERNANDES, 2001) e (b) Pequeno Dicionário de Expressões Idiomáticas (ZOCCHIO; BALARDIN, 1999). A partir das análises, o modelo projetado da estrutura interna das redes de integração conceptual revelou que a inter-relação entre EI e sua RP permite uma multiplicidade de projeções que participam na geração do sentido. O modelo também permite ampliar as relações conceptuais gerando diferentes mesclagens, de forma que a imagem em relação à sua representação verbal pode ser parcial ou totalmente congruente. O grau de (in)congruência entre o literal e o idiomático é, no continuum, decisivo para a determinação do resultado mesclado. Foi possível tornar evidente que há uma estreita ligação entre uma modalidade e a outra. Isso aponta para desvelar que a natureza do processamento da EI pode ser de base metafórica ou literal. Ainda com base nas análises, o modelo de mesclagem proposto comprovou ser eficiente para a demonstração da organização interna das redes na geração do sentido, a partir da inter-relação entre a representação verbal e não-verbal. Na estruturação das redes entram em jogo as várias projeções criativas e imaginativas, o que possibilita novas configurações de sentido (re)construído sucessivamente.

Psychanalyse appliquée aux représentations picturales des camps de concentration nazis / Psychoanalysis applied to pictorial representations of nazi concentration campsLamquin, Thomas 11 February 2011 (has links)
Ce travail de thèse porte sur la question de l’existence de représentations, sous forme picturale (dessins, peintures…), exécutées par certains sujets pendant leur internement dans les camps de concentration nazis, dans un contexte de traumatisme extrême, considéré comme de l’ordre de l’irreprésentable. A partir d’une étude de cas de trois sujets dessinateurs/trices, et de leur production picturale, abordée selon la méthode de la psychanalyse appliquée au sens d’André Green, une réflexion peut s’amorcer autour de l’hypothèse d’une autoconservation, différenciée, physique et psychique. Afin de la mener à bien sont résumées les représentations historiques après-coup, puis cernées la problématique du traumatisme extrême dans les camps de concentration et la création d’un point de vue psychanalytique avec des auteurs tels que Freud, Férenczi, Winnicott, Roussillon, Green, Bertrand, Zaltzman, Cerf de Duzeele, Waintrater et Cupa. Les résultats amènent à constater l’existence chez ces sujets d’une aire intermédiaire qui leur a permis de conserver une activité représentationnelle particulière. Celle-ci constitue un travail de représentation de la surréalité déréalisante du camp, principalement utilisé dans une autoconservation psychique. Inscrit dans un fil de culture, de filiation et d’historicisation, il participe d’un travail de liaison intrapsychique et intersubjectif ainsi que d’une lutte contre la désintrication pulsionnelle. Des fantasmes omnipotents d’éternité sous-jacents aux dessins vont de pair avec, dans l’activité, une coexcitation libidinale qui ouvre sur la question d’une éventuelle sublimation / This thesis begins with noticing that pictorial representations (e.g. drawings or paintings etc.) in nazi concentration camps have been made by some subjets while imprisonment, in a massive traumatism, usually thinked as a non-representable situation. From a three drawers and drawings study, imcompletely by Andre Green’s applied psychoanalysis method, reflexion can occur with the hypothesis of a dissociated physical and psychic self-preservation in that context. To achieve this goal, historical nazi camps differed representations, massive traumatism and creation, are detailed in a psychoanalytic viewpoint with Freud, Ferenczi, Winnicott, Roussillon, Green, Bertrand, Zaltzman, Cerf de Duzeele, Waintrater and Cupa as main authors. Results show the existence of an intermediate space that enabled these subjets to keep a specific representational activity. It’s mainly a representation work of the camp overreality in a psychic self-preservation way. This work is an internal and external connection work, in a culture and filiation link, that struggles against drive defusion. Eternity and omnipotent fantasy, libidinal coexcitation underly drawings and pictorial activity. They interrogate about a possible sublimation
