A case study on multiplication teaching with picture books to urban aboriginal middle grade pupils

Yang, Ya-chu 15 July 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to do teaching multiplication with picture books, and to understand the learning process of two cases, then to investigate the dilemma of teaching and its solutions. To achieve the above purpose, the researcher designed the multiplication teaching activities for urban aboriginal middle grade pupils. The researcher adopts case study research. The subjects of the study were two pupils who participated in the after-school program at an elementary school in Kaohsiung city. For both pupils, mathematics scores are the lowest among all other subject areas, and mathematics scores ranked at lower class 10%. The teaching content involved Amis tribe picture books, integer multiplication, and multiplicative situations (Greer, 1992). There were three teaching procedures: preparation for teaching, picture books teaching activities, and multiplication teaching activities. The research data collected were from interviews, observations, teaching reflective journals, learning sheets, and learning diaries. The researcher induced pupils¡¦ learning experience and error types before teaching multiplication with picture books and also revealed pupils¡¦ attitude towards teaching multiplication with picture books and the learning multiplication of concept and its improvement. The conclusion is, through teaching multiplication with picture books, both pupils were familiar with the multiplication algorithm meaningfully, could used direct representation to solve multiplication problem, and used multiplication concepts to reason. Furthermore, the teaching activities promote subjects¡¦ mathematical learning attitude, ethnic identity, parent-child interactions, and peer tutoring. The results showed that the multiplication teaching with picture books had a positive influence on the subjects¡¦ attitude and multiplication concept. Based on research results and findings, the researcher made suggestions for teaching and future research.

Genus och förskola i bilderboken : En analys av hur förskola eller förskoleklass och pedagoger framställs i sex bilderböcker / Gender and pre-school in picture books : An analysis of how pre-school or pre-school class and educators are portrayed in six picture books

Teeling, Emma January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to analyze six picture books from a gender perspective. Research and investigations shows that children's literature has a big influence on how young children understand norms and values related to gender identity. It is written in the Swedish curriculum for the non-compulsory school system that the pre-school should counteract traditional gender roles. In this essay, six picture books with stories that take place in a pre-school or a pre-school class are being analyzed. Two of them, according to their market strategy, challenges established gender norms. I have investigated if there are any differences between how the educator as a character and the pre-school are portrayed where a girl contra a boy has the leading role. The focus of the essay is on the educator’s approach towards the main character as well as how the pre-school or pre-school class is being portrayed. I have also compared the two books that challenges established gender norms with the other four. Qualitative content analysis has been used as method. Both the text and illustrations are interpreted and analyzed in the essay. The main theory that is applied in the analysis is the gender theory, in which the term "gender" refers to social constructions, rather than biological phenomenons, of femininities and masculinities. In conclusion it can be stated that the girl characters have a more positive relationship to the educator and the pre-school than the boy characters. In the books which have boys as main characters the relationship with the educator is implicitly or explicitly negative or distanced. In all of the books, in which boys hold the leading role, the pre-school or pre-school class is portrayed as a quite gender-segregated environment. This is an image that is not as noticeable in the books which have girls as main characters. It can also be interpreted that the books that are introduced to the market as challenging of gender norms in some aspects confirm, rather than challenge, established gender norms.

Bilderboken i förskolan : Vad pedagoger tar hänsyn till när de väljer böcker / Picture books in pree-school : What educators take into account when choosing books

Nordlander, Annika January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this study is to increase the knowledge regarding the selection process of picture books by pre-school educators. My intention is to find out which criteria educators use to select the books. I have restricted the study to pre-school educators, because I wish to find out how they work with the selection process and which criteria and considerations are included. I also want to know if the children have influence in the book selection and how the books get to the pre-school. The study is based on qualitative interviews with educators at a pre-schools in my area as well as relevant publications. The questions the educators were given were semi-structured. The theoretical starting point for the study has been Vygotskijs sociocultural theory. The results showed that the educators made diferent considerations regarding the book selections, it was importent for the educators that the children had influence either through selecting the books them self or that the educators selectet books that the children where intrested in and the educators borrowed a lot of books from the library
