On the Simulation of an All Electric Ship Powertrain Utilizing a Surface Piercing Propeller Via a Modular Main Propulsion Plant Model

Zisman, Zachary Samuel 17 June 2011 (has links)
A modular simulation model of a marine powertrain consisting of a prime mover, propeller shaft, propulsor, and control system was developed, tested, and used to demonstrate the ability to analyze the marine powertrain numerically. The modularity of the model allows for the user to easily substitute different or more advanced modules, or add additional modules to obtain a greater level of detail or simulate more complex interactions of systems with the marine powertrain. Current and historical trends indicate an interest in all electric ship design, and the use of surface piercing propellers for small craft. Due to the availability of towing tank data from a surface piercing propeller, an all electric prime mover module, surface piercing propeller module, propeller shaft module, and PID control module were coded, integrated, and operated, simulating a complete powertrain. Simulations were conducted using full-scale real-world conditions to demonstrate the model functionality and level of detail. Simulation results provided insight into the vibrational excitation, stability, and control of such a powertrain. / Master of Science

Recesión gingival localizada por uso de accesorio metálico (piercing) en labio: Argollas vs. labret

Tenorio Ramos, Franklin Alcides January 2011 (has links)
The objective of this study was to determine differences in the degree of localized gingival recession in adolescents between 15 and 25 years old, who used lip piercing. For this study included a sample of 40 adolescents with pierced lip. They were evaluated by sex, type of lip piercing, oral condition, time of use of piercing: (6-12 months), (1-2 years) and (more than 2 yrs). The results obtained 55.5% of patients were female and 45.5% males, for statistical analysis with p = 0.05 not found significant evidence. Class I gingival recession in Miller presented 70.5%, 22.5% Class II of Miller Class I and 2.5%. To use depending on the type presented piercing for labret 57.5%, and 42.55 for rings. For the analysis between the time of use of piercing and the disease progression presented: for the first year of the accessory use only Miller Class I with 27.5% in the second year of use are presented in Miller Class I 30 % and class II Miller with 2.5% and in those who used the attachment for more than 2 years of Miller class I presented 17.5% of Miller Class II and Class III 20% of Miller in 2, 5%. Statistical analysis Chi-square significant differences in relation to gingival recession with respect to time of use of the piercing. To which concludes to more time of use, the gingival recession it be will major.

An interpretative account of women's experience of body piercing.

Singh, Ashmin Devikosha. January 2002 (has links)
The spate of people with body piercings has drastically increased, yet research on this issue has been frugal. This research was undertaken to develop an understanding of the meanings that multiple body piercings has for women, specifically in terms of their experiences of piercing. Moreover, an emphasis was placed on attaining the participants' experiences of their (i)dentity(ies), and body image in terms of their piercings. A hermeneutic phenomenology methodology was used to develop this understanding premised upon the participants' experiences of multiple body piercings. The sample consisted of six women participants. Their ages ranged from twenty-one to twenty-eight. Interviews conducted, were transcribed verbatim. The interpretation of the data, was informed by a feminist psychoanalytic perspective. There were four themes overall. The over-arching theme that subsequently emerged, was that of Defence(s) against Loss, the second theme was that of (I)dentity, the third was Piercings and Femininity, and finally, the fourth theme was that of Control. Each of the themes were further broken down into significant sub-themes. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of Durban-Westville, 2002.

Approximation Algorithms for Rectangle Piercing Problems

Mahmood, Abdullah-Al January 2005 (has links)
Piercing problems arise often in facility location, which is a well-studied area of computational geometry. The general form of the piercing problem discussed in this dissertation asks for the minimum number of facilities for a set of given rectangular demand regions such that each region has at least one facility located within it. It has been shown that even if all regions are uniform sized squares, the problem is NP-hard. Therefore we concentrate on approximation algorithms for the problem. As the known approximation ratio for arbitrarily sized rectangles is poor, we restrict our effort to designing approximation algorithms for unit-height rectangles. Our e-approximation scheme requires <I>n</I><I>O</I>(1/&epsilon;??) time. We also consider the problem with restrictions like bounding the depth of a point and the width of the rectangles. The approximation schemes for these two cases take <I>n</I><I>O</I>(1/&epsilon;) time. We also show how to maintain a factor 2 approximation of the piercing set in <I>O</I>(log <I>n</I>) amortized time in an insertion-only scenario.
