Beer Festival and Place Identity : An Analysis of Munich Oktoberfest And Qingdao International Beer FestivalWang, Rucheng January 2022 (has links)
As microcosms of German and Chinese societies, Munich Oktoberfest and Qingdao International Beer Festival are important manifestations of local culture. This study intends to answer the following question: to which extent are beer festivals in Germany and China related to local history and the local sense of place? A historical overview of the beer festivals in Munich and Qingdao is provided, as well as an analysis of how people seeking a sense of belonging creatively combine cognitive schemata of modernity with local cultural systems on a symbolic level. Through textual analysis and interviews, this study attempts to explore the historical development of beer festivals in Germany and China and provide an analysis case of place identity through beer symbols and tourist experience based on a historical and geographical framework regarding uniqueness, authenticity, liminality and local identity. Originating in local history, Oktoberfest has evolved from a folk festivity to a globally known tourist spectacle. Faced with modernisation, "Heimat" helps Germany in smoothing the tension between the traditional sense of place and the modern nation-state identity. As a former German colony, Qingdao celebrates its beer festival emphasising recreation and enjoyment above traditions. The local beer-related customs such as plastic bags and drinking with seafood reflect the cultural hybridity of Qingdao in which consumerism and nostalgia are combined in reaction to the vast tourism generated by globalisation and modernisation. It remains a challenge for beer festivals both in Germany and China facing homogenisation and commercialisation to maintain a genuine connection with people, especially the locals. Future work on beer festivals could explore a variety of beer events in other historical, national and contextual settings, different perspectives as well as genderisation, which will enrich the study on festival tourism and place identity.

Sjöqvist, Sofie January 2024 (has links)
Due to urbanization, Sweden’s municipalities have adapted their cities for population growth as peoples’ desire to live closer to service, jobs, and city activities have increased. This has left the rural areas with population decline as the focus have swifted towards the city areas and place attractiveness and service in the rural have decreased. Municipalities need to aim focus on rural areas again to enhance an attractive living environment for its residents, but also to increase population growth again. However, there is a problem on how profitable it is to invest new buildings and infrastructure in those areas. This study focuses on Sundsvall municipality and its largest rural area, Indals- liden. It investigates opinions of current and recent residents on how the area can increase in attractiveness. The study points out what actions that three types of migrants (immigrants, emigrants, and home returners) want the municipality to prioritize in order to increase attractiveness and attract new residents, but also sustain a pleasant surrounding for existing residents. A rural coordinator explains the prioritized points, that have been analyzed in relative to the lifestyle migrant’s perspective. The results presents both similarities and differences between different groups of migrants on how to increase place attractiveness, but also differences and similarities between push- and pull factors that have driven them to move. Further, there are differences and similarities between the rural coordinator’s opinions and prioritized agenda, and the migrants. This study therefore concludes the importance of using the narrative of residents to ensure that the area stays attractive and have necessary service and infrastructure in order to attract new residents and provide a good living environment for current residents.

Process: A Strategy for developing Community Life and Place AttachmentRennick, Kimberly L. 03 July 2003 (has links)
Inner-city neighborhoods are being recognized for their potential to contribute visually, economically, and culturally to the urban core. Efforts to revitalize these neighborhoods will need to address the economic, cultural, and social structure of the neighborhood. Resident groups, in particular long-time and newer residents, will likely be affected by the cultural changes that inevitably accompany revitalization. This project explores the processes of community life and place attachment, and their role in fostering healthy communities. Residents, depending on their length of time in the neighborhood, will be at different stages of these processes. Design and planning may support community life and place attachment by understanding this continuum and providing for the processes that engender them. This project began with a review of literature on the subject of inner-city neighborhoods, gentrification, community life, and place attachment. From this literature design and planning criteria were extracted. These criteria were then applied to the Belmont-Fallon neighborhood in Roanoke, Virginia, and were evaluated based on the conditions of the neighborhood and levels of attachment of long-time and newer residents. Design implications were developed that may support the process of place attachment within this community. These implications were then illustrated and tested through design. / Master of Landscape Architecture

Place Attachment as an Interactional Process: A Case Study of Isle au Haut, MaineWoosnam, Kyle Maurice 06 October 2003 (has links)
By listening to peoples' constructed stories of special places, the average person begins to understand why and how attachments to places form. This study concerns the attachments residents of Isle au Haut, Maine possess on the remote island, which borders part of Acadia National Park. The purpose of this study is to uncover social components of both place attachment and place identity among island residents as well as explain the process by which those residents form attachments.
Twelve interviews were conducted both on Isle au Haut as well as nearby Mount Desert Island. Qualitative data were collected from a purposive sample of island residents and National Park Service employees who are responsible for managing the park on the island. In-depth interviews were the sole means of data collection and provided detailed stories of life on the island and attachments that have formed. This study uses grounded theory techniques in data analysis to ultimately form a theory grounded in the collected data.
The findings from this study indicate that social interaction is key to residents forming an attachment to Isle au Haut. Further, three major social constructs emerged from the data analysis. Those constructs are sense of community, shared purpose, and shared history, all of which were found to contribute to place identity and place attachment among the residents. The results also suggest place identity as more salient than place dependence in residents' narratives concerning their attachment to the island. / Master of Science

Dåtidens plats i nutiden : En fallstudie om bevarandet av industribyggnaderna i Kopparlunden i Västerås / The place of the past in the present : A case study on the conservation of the industrial buildings in Kopparlunden in VästeråsTilldén, Yasmin January 2024 (has links)
During the 1970s, increased interest in preserving old industries began to emerge, since then extensive changes have taken place in how these industries are valued as cultural heritage. This study aims to investigate the challenges that come with preserving the industrial cultural heritage found in Kopparlunden in Västerås. The study also aims to highlight how the municipality of Västerås has worked with the development of Kopparlunden and what measures have been taken to ensure that the cultural value found in the industries is not distorted. The concepts that made up the theoretical framework are: place, sense of place and place identity. To answer the purpose and questions, a documentanalysis and qualitative interviews with municipal workers in Västerås municipality have been conducted. The result shows that there are difficulties in preserving the old industries while they get a new area of use in the form of housing and premises, for example.

Big projects - small communities: The case of Finnafjörður, IcelandÞórsson, Guðni Þór January 2024 (has links)
The Finnafjörður harbour project rests on the idea that shipping routes in the Arctic will become navigable in the following decades. Located on the northeast corner of Iceland, the place is considered a suitable location for a trans-shipment harbour in the future to service Arctic marine traffic. The project would have considerable societal, natural, and economic consequences on the local community, which counts little more than 500 residents. The aim of this thesis is to explore residents’ attitudes towards the Finnafjörður harbour project in relation to sense of place and place based memories by asking how different views and attitudes of Langanesbyggð’s residents towards the Finnafjörður harbour project relate to changes in their sense of place, and how memories of a place form part of resident’s attitudes towards the project. The thesis employs a qualitative research strategy where semi-structured in-depth interviews are conducted with eleven residents of Langanesbyggð. The findings demonstrate different attitudes towards the project, which relate to changes in both the social and the physical environment. Furthermore, the role of memory is significant in shaping residents’ attitudes towards the project. The thesis addresses the voices of local communities, which have been largely neglected in Arctic studies to this day.

Exploring place-identity at workSegalo, Puleng Josephine 30 June 2004 (has links)
In this study the stories of Unisa academic employees and fashion models were explored. The aim was to understand the nature of place-identity at work and to also look at what impact do changes to these working environments have on place-identity. Another aim of this study was to compare these two work contexts. The data was collected through interviews combined with an auto-ethnographic approach. The study suggested that people form an identity towards their places of work and also that changes within the workplace can be perceived as a threat. The study also showed that there are similarities between Unisa and the catwalk as contexts of place-identity. / Psychology / M.A.(Psychology))

Previous issue date: 2012-08-30 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / This study aimed to analyze some indicators of the restructuring process of place identity
of natives resident in Tibau do Sul, a coastal town in the state of Rio Grande do Norte
state, in relation to changes occurring in this locale in the last few decades. The concept of
place identity a complex psychological structure in constant process of restructuring
stresses the focus of this analysis on the aspects referring to the relationships of people
with their physical and social environment throughout the transition process from the
former village of fishermen and peasant farmers to the current growing town. Interviews
with insider informants on local history were carried out as a preliminary step to getting in
touch with the native participants. In total, 29 native local residents were interviewed,
according to a wide range of personal and professional roles, focusing on their cognitions
in regard to their past and present relationships with this context, as well as those related to
expectancy for the future. The analysis focused both on the elements of distinctiveness,
continuity, self-esteem and self-efficacy, and on how each of them have been valued
(positive or negative). The participants evaluations of themselves and of the locale, as
well as their distinctions in relation to others (people and places) were, in general, very
positive. Many elements of group and place continuity, and the possibility of the
satisfaction of their needs were highlighted positively, especially comparing to similar
situations in the past. The development of the town, related to tourism as well as to other
former economic activities, seemed to contribute to the restructuring process of place
identity in a way of achieving desirable states for its structure. The broadening of the
analysis to consider a wider spatial and temporal context, however, shows that such
positive evaluation can be said to hinder some coping strategies of local residents faced
with unsustainable economic activities, oftentimes handled to favor a minority of the
A primeira etapa do estudo
