Separation and Execution of graphical engine on a cross platform IDE to enhance performance

“Biosim” is a simulation software which works to simulate the harvesting system.This system is able to design a model for any logistic problem with the combination of several objects so that the artificial system can show the performance of an individual model. The system will also describe the efficiency, possibility to be chosen for real life application of that particular model. So, when any one wish to setup a logistic model like- harvesting system, in real life he/she may be noticed about the suitable prostitution for his plants and factories as well as he/she may get information about the least number of objects, total time to complete the task, total investment required for his model, total amount of noise produced for his establishment in advance. It will produce an advance over view for his model. But “Biosim” is quite slow .As it is an object based system, it takes long time to make its decision. Here the main task is to modify the system so that it can work faster than the previous. So, the main objective of this thesis is to reduce the load of “Biosim” by making some modification of the original system as well as to increase its efficiency. So that the whole system will be faster than the previous one and performs more efficiently when it will be applied in real life. Theconcept is to separate the execution part of ”Biosim” form its graphical engine and run this separated portion in a third generation language platform. C++ is chosenhere as this external platform. After completing the proposed system, results with different models have been observed. The results show that, for any type of plants of fields, for any number of trucks, the proposed system is faster than the original system. The proposed system takes at least 15% less time “Biosim”. The efficiency increase with the complexity of than the original the model. More complex the model, more efficient the proposed system is than original “Biosim”.Depending on the complexity of a model, the proposed system can be 56.53 % faster than the original “Biosim”.

Facing the crush of the liberalization and globalization, the companies try their best to improve the ability of competitiveness. For saving cost and focusing on their development, the enterprises divide their business into two parts: the core and the non-core. The establishments assign others companies to conduct the non-core business such as information outsourcing, equipment-maintaining outsourcing, catering outsourcing, security outsourcing and so on. There may be many outsourcing cases in a large commercial enterprise. In order to enhance the efficiency and efficacy, reduce executing time and ensure the quality, the individual system is established. Although the individual system can administer the various kinds of outsourcing cases, it gains extra processing-time and reduplicate working-processes. Based on the specialties, the outsourcings are divided into three kinds: project, long-term contract, the combined of project and long-term contract. The outsourcing process and problems are examined by interviewing the employers and employees. According to the analyses, the operation procedures of outsourcing platform, the manuals of operating system, and the simulation with Arena are designed. Due to the results of simulation, the platform can solve the outsourcing problems and increase the efficiency. Therefore, the template can be established.

Multi-platform strategy and product family design

The application of product families and platforms has gained attention as a promising approach to achieving organizational objectives that provide customers with mass customized products while allowing for significant savings from commonality and reuse strategies. While the single-platform strategy has been widely studied, it may lead to the over expansion of the product family. Designers have to either continuously extend the exiting platform and/or impose strict constraints on new variants in order that there is a fit. On the one hand, continuously “extending“ or “'stretching“ the platform forces the platform to become overburdened and less efficient. On the other hand, imposing strict constraints on new variants will force new variants to compromise performances. In this research, the concept of a multi-platform strategy has been put forward to reduce or eliminate negative effects of the single-platform strategy by coordinating products in a complex product family into two or more platforms to provide enough product variety as well as commonality. The method is developed by adopting and synthesizing various tools and concepts from different research areas, such as design management tools, clustering analysis, statistics, decision analysis, mathematical programming, and engineering costing. The product assets that can be shared by the products are determined through product asset value analysis and redesign effort analysis. The number of platforms is flexibly determined by a hierarchical clustering method based on product similarity/dissimilarity. The product-platform assignment problem is simultaneously solved during the clustering process. A multi-objective optimization model is formulated to determine the design specifications and address the product positioning. A Consistent Aggregate Function Formation Method (CAF2M) is put forward to convert the multi-objective optimization model into a single-dimension problem that can quantitatively balance the tradeoff among the multiple objectives. To evaluate the economic benefit from the platform-based product development, an adjusted Activity-Based Costing approach is utilized to identify the cost savings with the consideration of learning effects. A case application with seven automobile models is utilized to illustrate the proposed multi-platform strategy. The method was found helpful for determining and integrating critical design information into the design of product families and platforms. / Ph. D.

An inquiry into the nature and causes of digital platforms

While the shape and nature of platforms varies across different instances, they pursue common ambitions such as reduction of risk, complexity, or transaction costs. Although initially theorised in industrial contexts, subsequent theorising regarding platform development, platform ecosystems, and platform strategy has drawn upon studies of high-tech industries in general and IT-based platforms in particular. While the inherent malleability of digitised data and digital technology offers possibilities, they also make it difficult to pin down the locus of a low-variety platform core. As such, one of the fundamental properties of digital platforms is rather mundane: to provide stability. With that in mind, this thesis pursues the following research question: How can a digital platform maintain stability for its stakeholders in the face of constant technical change? This thesis utilises affordance theory as a means to operationalise a relational view of digital platform, where stability is assessed in relation to stakeholders rather than technical persistence. This dissertation is based on an interpretive case study, primarily using qualitative data in the form of interviews gathered as part of two separate projects that varied both in scope and orientation. The thesis offers two main contributions. First, the idea of platform stability as derived from low-variety components that are persistent over time is difficult to apply in relation to digital platforms. Rather, we need to approach stability as a composite property, based on the ability of the platform to satisfy technical-, informational-, and social expectations. Hence, stability should not be considered as a fixed or absolute property, but rather a moving target. Second, this thesis suggests that the existing notion of (technical) coring needs to be complemented with information coring and social coring when applied to digital platforms. The proposed concept of information coring expresses the ability to hide complexity and present bottom-line results to the user in a comprehensible manner. Social coring refers to the idea of aligning technical integration and social integration in a platform. A relational perspective applied to digital platforms offers a possible avenue for theorising digital platforms as information systems artefacts rather than the dichotomous relationship between platform-as-architecture and platform-as-marketplace found in extant literature.

Goal of the thesis is to show the possibilities of using ordinary hobbyist RC servos and means of their control by a computer. For demonstration of the capabilities of servos, we have created Stewart platform which is using hobbyist servos to position the platform. In the thesis there is explained principle of the inner working of a servo, their properties, abilities and also means of their control by a computer. In practical chapters of the thesis there is documented process of designing and implementing of functional Stewart platform along with specific properties of this platform which influence its design. This platform is also reviewed and based on the results we will show technical properties of the platform, advantages and disadvantages of using ordinary hobbyist servos to control the platform. Design of the platform and its documentation is created with respect to intent to make the ddesign, source codes, documentation available to public on wepages focused on aggregating of instructables and tutorials to make usage of outputs possible in practice.

A Company Case Study: Examining criteria in cross-platform evaluation frameworks

The world of mobile application development faces many challenges today. Software companies want their applications available on both iOS and Android platforms to reach as many users as possible but developing for each native platform separately is time consuming and takes up unnecessary resources. This is the problem that cross-platform development frameworks aim to solve. Today the market is flooded with many cross-platform frameworks to choose from. This has led to a need for companies to identify which cross-platform framework to choose based on a framework’s strengths and weaknesses. Many methods of evaluating cross-platform frameworks have been created, but the challenge of choosing the right one still prevails. This research is aimed to investigate one of these evaluation methods, claiming to be the definitive evaluation framework. This thesis was chosen to be a case study, by cooperating with a company to get insight in the industry’s view on this evaluation framework and learn their opinion of what values are important when evaluating a development framework. The evaluation framework consists of a set of 33 criteria, each aimed at evaluating different parts of a development framework and the resulting applications. In this research, we investigate 8 of these criteria in depth and explore how these could be assigned points in an objective manner. We developed one prototype for each development framework subject to evaluation and gave these points using a system based on the evaluation framework with the added extension of defining our own sub-criteria system for assigning points as objectively as possible. From the collected data during the study we could see, not only, if the company could decide which of the development frameworks in our evaluation was more suitable for their needs. If the evaluation framework performed as intended by the creators and if this was something the company could use further on, for other projects. Results from using the proposed sub-criteria system in the evaluation are also presented and discussed.

Development of a field-based high-throughput mobile phenotyping platform

Master of Science / Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering / Naiqian Zhang / In order to meet food, fiber, and bio-fuel needs of a growing world population, crop-breeding methods must be improved and new technologies must be developed. One area under focus is the decoding of the genetic basis of complex traits, such as yield and drought stress tolerance, and predicting these traits from genetic composition of lines or cultivars. In the last three decades, significant advances in genotyping methods have resulted in a wealth of genomic information; however, little improvement has occurred for methods of collecting corresponding plant trait data, especially for agronomic crops. This study developed a mobile, field-based, high-throughput sensor platform for rapid and repeated measurement of plant characteristics. The platform consisted of three sets of sensors mounted on a high-clearance vehicle. Each set of sensors contained two infrared thermometers (IRT), one ultrasonic sensor, one Crop Circle, and one GreenSeeker. Each sensor set measured canopy temperature, crop height, and spectral reflectance. In addition to the sensors, the platform was equipped with an RTK-GPS system that provided precise, accurate position data for georeferencing sensor measurements. Software for collecting, georeferencing, and logging sensor data was developed using National Instruments LabVIEW and deployed on a laptop computer. Two verification tests were conducted to evaluate the phenotyping system. In the first test, data timestamps were analyzed to determine if the system could collect data at the required rate of 10 Hz and 5 Hz for sensor data and position data, respectively. The determination was made that, on average, IRT, ultrasonic, and Crop Circle data are received in intervals of 100 ms (SD = 10 ms), GreenSeeker data are received in intervals of 122 ms(SD=10 ms), and position data are received in intervals of 200 ms (SD = 32 ms). The second test determined that a statistically significant relationship exists between sensor readings and ambient light intensity and ambient temperatures. Whether the relationship is significant from a practical stand point should be determined based on specific application of the sensors.

While software standards have helped this effort, they do not go far enough, and many platforms only partially support these standards leaving many needed functions in platform specific libraries. This is particularly evident in the areas of graphics and user interfaces, threading and synchronization, and in network and file access. Fortunately, Java offers a common interface where native libraries diverge. This paper outlines a phased strategy for migrating platform specific applications to be platform independent while reusing the robust, existing algorithms.
