Learning to Optimize Decisions in Online Service Platforms

Zhao, Jingtong January 2021 (has links)
In this thesis, we consider how service platforms can provide personalized service to incoming consumers in order to improve ease and convenience for their users, or to enhance their own revenues. With an increasing trend toward digitalization, there is now a massive amount of data that can be leveraged to accomplish this goal. In this thesis, we explore how to leverage feature data about the consumers and products, as well as the way consumers interact with the platforms, in order to make better operational decisions, such as pricing, ranking, and recommendations of products and services. In Chapters 1 & 2, we study platforms in which consumers' purchasing decisions are strongly influenced by reviews that are posted by previous consumers. In Chapter 1, we consider how a platform can learn from the choices that consumers make, as well as the reviews they leave, in order to form increasingly accurate estimates about product quality and consumer preferences, so that the platform can provide better personalized product rankings. In Chapter 2, we focus on platforms where each consumer forms an impression of a product by browsing the available reviews in a chosen order following a cascade click model. We consider how to rank the reviews as well as how to price a product given the reviews, in order to maximize short- and long-term revenue. In Chapter 3, we study a platform that offers a menu of memberships of different durations to a pool of heterogeneous consumers. A consumer's choice depends on both the menu prices and his personal intended usage time. The platform wants to maximize the long-term revenue while considering the choices made by heterogeneous customers. We show insights into the optimal solution of each problem when all the parameters are known. For the case where some parameters are initially unknown, we propose a joint learning and optimization algorithm, and provide theoretical guarantees for its performance.

I like to experience clothes, you know : The Role of Online Resale Platforms in Consumers’ Fashion Consumption

Bakkenist, Jean-Paul, Lammers, Alice January 2021 (has links)
The study aims to gain insights on whether the use of online resale platforms alter the relationship that consumers have with their clothes and how that - as a consequence - leads to a changed consumption pattern. With the awareness of the significance of resale, potentially causing wide-scale industrial changes, the aim is also to examine the possible environmental effects resale can have. In seeking to explain this phenomena, this study undertakes a qualitative research strategy with an abductive approach. The primary data consists of semi-structured in-depth interviews conducted with respondents from a younger consumer group who are or have been frequent users of online resale platforms and holds a noticeable interest in fashion. A thematic analysis was then conducted as a framework to analyse the interview data, resulting in a structure of first order and second order concepts as themes. The findings indicate that the use of resale platforms enables the consumer to engage with garments at a higher level of pace, quantity, and variety. The convenience with which the user can purchase and dispose of garments causes a continuous inflow and outflow of clothes. This - consequently - may call attention to the possible negative environmental effects resale platforms may lead to. This study adds value to the intersection of fields concerning fashion consumption and sustainability.

COVID-19 AND ITS IMPACT ON A RAPID DIGITAL IMPLEMENTATION : An employee’s insight of a company without the prior infrastructure

Rodriquez, Lorena January 2021 (has links)
The COVID-19 pandemic impacted many around the world, some more than others, having socioeconomic impacts around the globe. Due to its rapid spread many countries implemented restrictions, such as quarantines to uphold social distancing between its citizens. In addition, the coronavirus has not only affected people’s way of life but also many companies’ financial health worldwide. This pandemic’s side effects has resulted in increased digital transformation, causing many companies without the required infrastructure to rapidly implement mechanism and strategies to handle this type of work style. This studies aim is to give an insight in employee’s experiences and reactions to a rapid digital implementation, in a company without the infrastructure in place. With the help of an inductive approach and a multi level framework, four themes emerged from the interviews conducted ImplementationConsequences, Organizational Support, Expectations of Digital Implementation and Work-related Differences. The results showed that there is a discrepancy between the necessary factors for a successful implementation, highlighted in the model used and the respondent’s answers. Linked to this was the gender differences, a new factor arising from the data collected, emphasising the difficulties linked to teleworking but affecting a proactive use of digital tools, and hence lowering the work productivity. Even though there were differences, there were also parables showing that acceptance, attitude, and involvement in the implementation, among other factors are crucial for an openness towards digitalization. Finally, these factors and their relationship with digital implementation as well as the pandemic were explored trough a multi level framework.
