Heroism and Failure in Anglo-Saxon Poetry: the Ideal and the Real within the Comitatus

This dissertation discusses the complicated relationship (known as the comitatus) of kings and followers as presented in the heroic poetry of the Anglo-Saxons. The anonymous poets of the age celebrated the ideals of their culture but consistently portrayed the real behavior of the characters within their works. Other studies have examined the ideals of the comitatus in general terms while referring to the poetry as a body of work, or they have discussed them in particular terms while referring to one or two poems in detail. This study is both broader and deeper in scope than are the earlier works. In a number of poems I have identified the heroic ideals and examined the poetic treatment of those ideals. In order to establish the necessary background, Chapter I reviews the historical sources, such as Tacitus, Bede, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and the work of modern historians. Chapter II discusses such attributes of the king as wisdom, courage, and generosity. Chapter III examines the role of aristocratic women within the society. Chapter IV describes the proper behavior of followers, primarily their loyalty in return for treasures earlier bestowed. Chapter V discusses perversions and failures of the ideal. The dissertation concludes that, contrary to the view that Anglo-Saxon literature idealized the culture, the poets presented a reasonably realistic picture of their age. Anglo-Saxon heroic poetry celebrates ideals of behavior which, even when they can be attained, are not successful in the real world of political life.

Energy and Archetype: A Jungian Analysis of The Four Zoas by William Blake

The purpose of this study is to examine the parallels between the tenets of Carl Jung's psychology and the mythopoeic structure of Blake's poem, The Four Zoas. The investigation is divided into three chapters. The first deals with the major conceptual parallels between the intellectual systems of the two men. The second is a detailed analysis of the poem, and the third concludes the study by discussing the originality of Blake's thought. Blake anticipated much of Jung's psychology. The parallels between the two are so strong that each man seems to corroborate and validate the opinions and insights of the other. The extent to which he foreshadows Jung reveals Blake to be one of the most original thinkers of any period of time.

The identity, agency and political influence of al-Hakkamat Baggara women poets in armed conflict in Darfur, Sudan, from 1980s to 2006

This research explores the role of al-Hakkamat rural women poets in the context of armed conflict in Darfur, from 1980s to 2006. Utilising QSR NVivo7 software, the study analyses and interprets qualitatively collected data in the light of the posed research questions. Processes and attributes leading to the identification of al-Hakkamah, such as her singing and composing talents, are explored - from identifying and nurturing to fully constructing her role as a folk singer and agitator as well as a powerful social actor. Her nurtured personal and social identities reconstruct for her gender roles that are found to be both feared and revered by the community and appropriated by the government. She is found to respond effectively to situations ranging from gallantry (lauding), solidarity (lobbying) to downright belligerency (inciting). These roles exhibit robust and proactive gender roles and power relations in Darfur that enable women, not without historical precedence, to exercise their own identity, agency and political influence in an otherwise overwhelmingly patriarchal society. The study also reveals that the conflict of Darfur is rooted in the history of the neopatrimonial domestic politics pursued by the riverine ruling elites, marked by systemic failure to manage resource issues equitably between tribal and ethnic entities in Darfur. In such circumstances, al-Hakkamat agency is either volunteered or enlisted in the attempt to secure an advantage. In either case her agency is verifiably seen to bolster the hypothesis that rural women in Darfur exercise more power than their counterparts in rural northern Sudan.

Greek poets in South Africa, 1960-2004

M.A. (Greek) / The main purpose of this study has been to investigate the work of Greek poets in South Africa's Hellenic Diaspora from 1960 up to date, a period of a more voiummous artistic production due to the noticeable increase in the number of new Hellene immigrants and the innovative cultural atmosphere they brought along. Under this perspective, we examined the forces which led individuals to artistic creation with special focus on the relation between national identity and poetic production. Research has initially been based on poem collections, personal interviews as well as on newspaper articles, magazine publications and schedules of events which constitute our primary resources. In due course, lexicons and encyclopaedias were used to clarify terminology and semantics, as well as p!Cvious studies and relevant bibliography in order to prove, substantiate and enrich our present study. Implementation of quantitative and qualitative approaches with the use of questionnaires, interviews and data analysis rendered our project the following form: In the first chapter, Hellas is examined as the poets' country of origin in order to investigate the possible historic and literary influences carried over by the Greek poets to their new home. A history review of the period between the Second World War and 1974 was conducted examining the Hellenic socio-economic conditions predominant during the said period, which are likely to have led individuals into emigrating, as well as the post-war Hellenic literary development…

In this thesis I investigate central features in Instagram poetry based on the hypothesis that it is a new form of literary phenomenon. The study analyses six accounts on Instagram, all dedicated to Instagram poetry, as well as a selection of feature articles about Instagram poetry and interviews with the poets. Through this investigation, four aspects where considered: the themes of the poetry, the variety of roles Instagram poets play in relation to their poetry and their readers, how representation plays a part in some of these roles, as well as how the poetry takes place on the platform. The form and display of the poetry are examined further through an intermedial analysis of the relation between text, image, and the Instagram medium.  This thesis argues that the themes of Instagram poetry are correlated with an assumption that the poet is honest and credible.Instagram poets play a crucial part in making the readers view their poetry as honest and credible, and they establish different roles to create and uphold that image. Through the intermedial analysis it has become clear that Instagram poets work with other aspects beside text, which is a quality of the poetry that has not been noticed in previous discussions and in dominant ideas of Instagram poetry. In conclusion, the thesis argues that Instagram poetry also shares traits with popular fiction and romance, in the poets’ aspiration to first of all connect with the readers and provide friendship, self-help, and comfort, through the poetry and the Instagram account.

POW/MIC: Prisoners of Words/Missing in Canon: Liberating the Neglected British War Poets of The Great War.

Since the First World War ended in 1918 and anthologies began to emerge, limited attention has been paid to the poets of this era. While a few select male poets have achieved canonicity, women war poets of this era have fallen into enigmatic obscurity. The intention of this paper is to expound, explicate, and expose the difficulties relating to gaining entry into the canon of English literature, especially where the poets of The Great War are concerned. This paper discusses the absence of the most profound and foreshadowing poems written during the war through research of scholarly journals and out-of-print poems. The paper also seeks to prove that the defenses offered up which exclude certain poems in the anthologies have had repercussions extending into the twenty-first century. Beyond all human imagination, the excluded poetry of The Great War is languishing, wanting, and imploring for exploration and canonicity.

Muovendo da una vasta ricognizione sulle riviste letterarie degli anni Trenta, la ricerca si è concentrata sui principali periodici a cui hanno collaborato poeti e critici ermetici: Interessanti si sono rivelati i rapporti epistolari tra i poeti e i direttori e redattori delle riviste: nella tesi sono state riportate le lettere più significative, con privilegio per quelle inedite. Sono stati riportati diversi documenti di natura critico-teorica, alcuni testi poetici rari di Mario Luzi (mai confluiti in una silloge e mai riproposti da alcuno studioso) e sono state antologizzate (con trascrizione dei testi e apparato in calce) le liriche di alcuni poeti che presentano varianti rispetto all'ultima edizione in volume: si tratta di versi di Mario Luzi, Umberto Saba, Carlo Betocchi, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Salvatore Quasimodo, Alessandro Parronchi. Almeno un terzo della tesi è dedicato a questo. / Starting from a wide investigation in the literary reviews in the '30s, the research has focused on the major magazines, for which hermetic poets and critics worked. The correspondence between poets and editors in chief and members of the editorial staff has proved extremely interesting; the most meaningful letters, especially the unpublished ones, are presented in the thesis. Many critic-theoretic documents and some rare poetries by Mario Luzi (never collected nor published by critics) are also reproduced. Moreover lyrics by various poets, such as Mario Luzi, Umberto Saba, Carlo Betocchi, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Salvatore Quasimodo, Alessandro Parronchi, have been anthologised (with text transcription and apparatus criticus below); all of them present some changes in text compared to the final version, printed in volume. This analysis represents, at least, the third part of the thesis.

Like pilgrims to this moment : myth, history, and politics in the early writing of Seamus Heaney and Leonard Cohen

This thesis examines the early work of poets Leonard Cohen and Seamus Heaney in light of their treatment of mythology, ritual, and mythologization, moving either from personal to political awareness (Heaney), or from political to personal awareness (Cohen). Heaney, writing in the midst of the Irish Troubles throughout the late 1960s and 1970s, slowly works up to political awareness as the situation from which he is writing becomes more dire. By contrast, Cohen writes during the beginnings of the Quiet Revolution in Quebec, from the late 1950s to the mid-1960s, moving progressively farther away from the highly political and mythologized work of his first book. This thesis analyzes both poets first four books of poetry and how each poet addresses the politics of his historical time and place as a minority figure: an Irish Catholic in Northern Ireland, and an Anglophone Jew in Montreal, respectively. Ultimately, each poet chooses to mythologize and use traditional mythologies as a means of addressing contemporary horrors before being poetically (and politically) exhausted by the spiritual and mental exertion involved in the "poetry of disfigurement."

Interested in what the imagery of these poems convey, and intent on declaring Rossetti as a prominent example of Gothic poets, the author makes a strong case for the including of Rossetti among the great Gothics.
