Accessing an FPGA-based Hardware Accelerator in a Paravirtualized Environment

In this thesis we present pvFPGA, the first system design solution for virtualizing an FPGA - based hardware accelerator on the x86 platform. The accelerator design on the FPGA can be used for accelerating various applications, regardless of the application computation latencies. Our design adopts the Xen virtual machine monitor (VMM) to build a paravirtualized environment, and a Xilinx Virtex - 6 as an FPGA accelerator. The accelerator communicates with the x86 server via PCI Express (PCIe). In comparison to the current GPU virtualization solutions, which primarily intercept and redirect API calls to the hosted or privileged domain’s user space, pvFPGA virtualizes an FPGA accelerator directly at the lower device driver layer. This gives rise to higher efficiency and lower overhead. In pvFPGA, each unprivileged domain allocates a shared data pool for both user - kernel and inter-domain data transfer. In addition, we propose the coprovisor, a new component that enables multiple domains to simultaneously access an FPGA accelerator. The experimental results have shown that 1) pvFPGA achieves close-to-zero overhead compared to accessing the FPGA accelerator without the VMM layer, 2) the FPGA accelerator is successfully shared by multiple domains, 3) distributing different maximum data transfer bandwidths to different domains can be achieved by regulating the size of the shared data pool at the split driver loading time, 4) request turnaround time is improved through DMA (Direct Memory Access) context switches implemented by the coprovisor.

This thesis aims on solving consequences of nuclear accidents in nucler power plants through commercial insurance. First part of this work introduces internationl liability framework for nuclear accidents, which contains international nuclear threaties and work of International Atomic Energy Agency, altogether with work of czech Agency for nuclear security. Next chapters describe nuclear insurance pools, with special focus on american pool American Nuclear Insurers and Czech nuclear insurance pool. Final part of this thesis goes through two big nuclear accidents in Three Mile Island power plant and in Fukushima power plant. Both accidents are described in wide perspective, including solving and financing of consequences from nuclear insurance and from other financial sources available at the time of disaster.

Swimming Pool

My project started with two words: Swimming Pool. They came to me through a song, Banshee Beat by Animal Collective (2005). To me, their music is mystical, abstract, unpredictable and also metaphorical. So I started to think about if a swimming pool could be something more than just an open container filled with water. After some thinking I came to the conclusion that it could be a metaphor for something calm, quiet and dreamy. However, I’m not sure but my aim is not to get to a specific answer through this project.  I’ll turn the metaphor into a textile work that portrays what you see when you’re standing at the edge of the swimming pool; a distorted picture of a grid, the bottom of the pool. I’ll be working with dyeing, patchwork and quilting. The textile craft is important in this project because of how relaxed and calm I get by doing things with my hands.  The questions I’m asking myself are how I can express the metaphor through my work? What if my interpretation is too wide? Is it possible for me to create a tactile and calm feeling without the physical touch?

Cooperativas em comunidades tradicionais pesqueiras: dois estudos de caso / Cooperatives in traditional fisheries communities: two case studies

No cenário da pesca artesanal nacional, a garantia de acesso aos territórios pesqueiros e a construção de cadeias produtivas que valorizem ao mesmo tempo o pescado e o pescador são condições que podem ser atingidas através da organização cooperativa da produção e das comunidades. O presente trabalho se pautou nas abordagens teórico-metodológicas da ação coletiva e da gestão compartilhada dos recursos de uso comum para analisar a trajetória de duas cooperativas em comunidades tradicionais pesqueiras no Brasil: a Cooperativa dos Pescadores Artesanais de Carutapera, no litoral das reentrâncias no Maranhão, e a Cooperativa dos Produtores de Ostra de Cananéia, no litoral sul de São Paulo. Foram realizados os seguintes procedimentos metodológicos: revisão bibliográfica, levantamento de dados secundários, observação direta dos fatos e fenômenos, contato com atores chave para fornecer dados e análise contextual dos estudos de caso. Os territórios onde se encontram cada uma das cooperativas foram descritos de acordo com os aspectos demográficos, sociais, econômicos e ambientais, servindo como ponto de partida para a compreensão do estado atual das áreas de estudo. As trajetórias das ações coletivas que levaram à criação das cooperativas foram sistematizadas em uma perspectiva histórica, separadas por fases e elencados os principais acontecimentos que contribuíram para o desenvolvimento do cooperativismo local. A análise desses dados permitiu inferir quais foram as dinâmicas chave na promoção da ação conjunta e coordenada entre os indivíduos. As cadeias produtivas locais foram descritas e as relações sociais de produção que regem os aspectos de mercado nessas cooperativas foram identificadas, assim como as bases de conhecimento tradicionais e ecológicos em que ocorre a produção nos sistemas pesqueiros. Por fim, descreveram-se as áreas de uso comum utilizadas pela pesca e maricultura artesanal e o funcionamento dos regimes de propriedade empregados na gestão desses territórios. A realização dessa pesquisa possibilitou a contraposição entre os dados de ambos estudos de casos em uma perspectiva de identificação de padrões semelhantes e divergentes entre as cooperativas estudadas. As principais contribuições foram no sentido de que é preciso atentar-se ao contexto que impulsiona o empreendimento das ações coletivas que almejam melhores condições de vida para as comunidades, buscando identificar as lideranças em potencial, os motivos que fazem com que as pessoas cooperem entre si e os mecanismos que mantêm a confiança entre os indivíduos, que por sua vez leva à retroalimentação desse ciclo solidário tecido nos atributos socioecológicos e em valores como a reciprocidade. / In the context of the Brazilian artisanal fishery, the assurance of access to fishing territories and the development of value chains that consider both fish and fisherman are conditions that can be achieved through cooperative organization of production and communities. This work is based on the theoretical-methodological approaches of the collective actions and the shared management of common-use resources, especially marine resources. That background was used to analyze the historical trajectory of two cooperatives in traditional fishing communities in Brazil: the Cooperative of Artisanal Fishermen of Carutapera, in the indentation of the coastline in Maranhão State, and the Cooperative of Oyster Producers of Cananeia, in the South coastline of São Paulo State. The following methodological proceedings were carried: literature review, secondary data collection, direct observation of facts and phenomena, contact with stakeholders for the provision of data and analysis of the study cases context. The territories where each cooperative are located were described according to demographical, social, economical and environmental aspects, as a starter for the understanding of the current state of the study areas. The trajectory of the collective action that had led to the creation of the cooperatives were organized in a historical perspective, separated by phases, and it was listed/organized according by the main events that had contributed to the development of local cooperatives. The analysis of the data allowed the inference of what were the facts and key phenomena in promoting of the joint and coordinated action among individuals. The local value chain was described, and the social relations of production that deal with the market aspects in these cooperatives, were also identified as well as the traditional and ecological knowledge in what had occurred the production in the fishery systems. Finally, it was described the common areas used for fishing and artisanal mariculture, and how the property regimes employed works in the management of these territories. The realization of this research allowed the opposition between the data from both case studies in an identification prospect of similar and divergent patterns between the studied cooperatives. The main contributions were to the effect that it is necessary to pay attention to the context that drives the development of collective actions. When aimed to better living conditions for the communities, it needs to identify potential leaders, the reasons that make people cooperate with each other and the mechanisms that maintain trust between individuals, which in turn leads to feedback that solidarity cycle fabric on values such as reciprocity.

Review of Cryogenic Pool Boiling Critical Heat Flux Databases, Assessment of Models and Correlations, and Development of New Universal Correlation

<p>Despite worldwide interest in a number of applications involving cryogenic fluids that are crucial to future space exploration, there is presently a lack of a large, reliable cryogenic pool boiling critical heat flux (CHF) database that can be used for assessment of accuracy of available predictive tools - model and correlations – or development of new tools. This shortcoming is a primary motivation for the present study, prompting compilation of a new consolidated cryogenic pool boiling CHF database from world literature. The database is used to assess accuracy of previous models and correlations, which are segregated according to ability to predict key operating parameters, such as pressure, surface orientation, and subcooling. A new correlation is constructed which shows very good predictive accuracy, evidenced by a mean absolute error of 16.95%, based on Earth gravity data which comprise a large fraction of the consolidated database. Using a limited subset of datapoints for three cryogens and a reduced gravity range of 0 to 0.7466, the new correlation is further modified with a reduced gravity multiplier to tackle reduced gravity conditions. The modified correlation has a mean absolute error of 17.47%, slightly higher than for Earth gravity alone. Overall, the new correlations are proven far more accurate than all prior models and correlations and therefore constitute new powerful tools for design of cryogenic space systems. It is shown CHF is very sensitive to pressure, increasing with increasing pressure up to maximum before decreasing appreciably toward critical pressure. CHF is also shown to be strongly influenced by surface orientation, being highest for horizontal surfaces and decreasing monotonically with increasing orientation angle, and increasing fairly linearly with increased subcooling.</p><p>Additionally, CHF models and correlations are assessed using amassed quenching CHF data that showed overpredictions of data. A new correlation is formulated which includes the effects of surface material and heater thickness to achieve high predictive accuracy for complied quenching CHF database. The new correlation has a mean absolute error and root mean square error of 10.79% and 16.12%, respectively, based on a compiled database. Analysis of complied quenching data showed that CHF is sensitive to the surface material, increasing with increasing thermal conductivity but, the influence of surface material becomes weak with increasing thermal conductivity. CHF is also strongly influenced by heater thickness, increasing with increased heater thickness till it reaches the asymptotic thickness. </p>

The roofing of the building is realized as a single-flat roofs. The single-storey part is a green roof. Part of the project is a detached building pram. Parking for eleven cars is placed in front.

The thesis contains design documentation, technical report, thermal technical appraisal, details of 2D technical field, fire technical report, structural analysis of timber structures. This project is aimed at building public swimming pool – swimming pool whose lenght is 25 meters, children´s pool, relaxation pool, whirlpool and the sauna area which consists of three saunas. The proposed project has two floors and one basement with dimensions of 70,2 x 33,5 m. The build-up area is 2352m2 . Flat roof with compact structure with a foam glass. The roof carry wooden glulam beams. The thesis can be used as a basis of the building procedure.

The aim of this master's thesis is design of an indoor swimming pool in the town of Náměšť nad Oslavou. The thesis contains project documentation, technical reports, reports of fire safety and assessment of building physics. There are two swimming pools designed in the building, main swimming pool of lenght 25m and a smaller one for children. Next to the pool hall a wellness area is placed consisting of three saunas, as well as cooling pool and a rest room. The proposed building has one ground floor and one basement level. Load-bearing structures are made of reinforced concrete except for the structure of the roof in the pool hall which is constructed from glued timber trusses. A glass facade is designed in this part of the building. Perimeter walls are thermally insulated using polystyrene foam. The roof is designed as a compact roof with foam glass thermal insulation.
