Mestrado profissional em saúde: interações estabelecidas entre centro de pesquisa e unidades de trabalho / Professional Master in Health: interactions established between research center and work units

Fernando Rossi Trigo 21 December 2017 (has links)
The postgraduate system brought contributions to universities, mainly for the improvement in the quality of education and knowledge production. Established in the decade of 1960s, with the purpose of qualifying professionals, mostly professors of the university itself, it aimed at expanding their training in research and, as a result, encouraging knowledge production. In this sense, teaching and research have been strengthened. By the end of the decade of 1990, CAPES recognized the Professional Master - stricto sensu - as a postgraduate modality. Focusing on the professionals in business, it proposes an approach to research, with the commitment of reaching and modifying work environment. In parallel, in 1990, the Blood Center of the Clinical Hospital of the Ribeirão Preto Medical School of the University of São Paulo was founded. With the initial proposal of providing assistance and care to the population, this health center has lived with the research carried out in the academy, what enabled to reconcile knowledge production with the practice developed in its daily routine. In 2012, it launched the professional master in Hemotherapy and Biotechnology, with the aim of training and qualifying professionals in this field. In this work, the objective was to study this program, proposing to investigate the mechanisms of interaction established between the research center and partner work units, from the perspective of egress students (1st and 2nd classes). Because it has an exploratory and initial character, we planned to work with indicators exclusive to the professional modality, allowing to strengthen the follow-up and evaluation of the program offered, mainly those indicators related to the applicability of projects and to the impact of the course done on the professional act of the egress student. Therefore, the present work is an exploratory-descriptive study using quantitative and qualitative approaches, with six major investigation topics: the program offered; the research project developed; intellectual production; the unfolding of the experience of groups of professionals from different states of Brazil; the contribution of the supervisor for the development of research projects; and the contribution resulting from the approach of students to research. With the features of specific training and possibility of gathering professionals of the area of Hemotherapy from the nine regions of Brazil, the program has enabled to accomplish the objectives expected in the professional modality (stricto sensu) and established in the project creation in 2011. Part of these results is owed primarily to three mechanisms of interaction identified: the research project, experience of living as a group, and supervisor, each one with specific contributions to the process of students\' training and learning, enabling to achieve changes in work units and in professional conduct and competences. This first characterization of the proposal allows to create a comparison point for the recently implemented program, which will go through its first four-yearly assessment in 2017. Difficulties and limitations have also been diagnosed and must to be reviewed, restructured and managed, such as the practical content of the course, the chart of technical administrative professionals and the time for titling, with an average of 35.4 months, what demands some thoughts. The regular follow-up of egress students and creation of a continuous platform for data construction will allow to intervene and adjust the program, making possible to notice maturation and growth phases, with special attention to indicators related to the professional modality.

Constructing gender : postgraduate psychology students’ gendered accounts of their future profession

Hira, Tamanna Chandrakant 23 August 2013 (has links)
In this qualitative study I explored how postgraduate psychology students treat gender in their accounts of their future profession, using a social constructionist framework. I considered how this group of future psychologists drew upon gendered accounts in three different settings in which they found themselves within the profession. These included exploring how participants constructed their own gendered identities in their narratives of how they came to be pursuing professional training in psychology; how gender featured in their accounts of therapeutic processes and interactions with clients; and finally, their reflections on gendered participation in the broader field of psychology. Interview data from two semi-structured focus group discussions with 12 postgraduate psychology students was analysed using social constructionist thematic analysis. Three main themes were identified that related to participants’ gendered accounts according to their personal, professional and more general constructions of gender, namely: 1) psychology as a profession of choice; 2) setting the scene within psychology in terms of gender, which was divided into: a) a construction of gender from the psychologists’ perspective, and b) psychologists’ construction of gender from their clients’ perspectives. The third and last main theme was 3) Increased competition for females as a consequence of women’s empowerment. This study intended to contribute to the expansion of existing literature by addressing the issue of gender and its related aspects in the field of psychology in a South African context, given the dearth of extended research conducted in developing countries so far. The findings supported those of previous studies to an extent, but mainly redressed the perspective of gender through the identification of new themes. By looking into postgraduate psychology students’ constructions of their own gendered accounts it appeared that upcoming psychologists viewed gender in complex ways, instead of typically reported notions of difference, inequality and inferiority or superiority. In this way, the benefit of understanding professional development within the field of psychology served as a valuable point of departure in understanding debates around how gender was implicated in the clientele psychologists serve. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Psychology / unrestricted

A Transition-to-Practice Residency That Supports the Nurse Practitioner in a Critical Access Hospital

Stock, Nancy Jean 01 January 2015 (has links)
Access to health care in rural communities is challenged by workforce shortages. Nurse practitioners (NPs) have been filling the gap created by physician migration into specialty areas. Flex hospital legislation allows critical access hospitals (CAHs) to staff the emergency department with NPs or physician assistants without on-site physicians. NP education often lacks emergency and trauma curriculum, resulting in gaps in education and practice expectations and leading to significant role transition stress and turnover. The purpose of this project was to construct an evidence-based transition-to-practice residency program to support NPs providing emergency department care in the CAH. Theoretical frameworks used to guide the project include rural health theory, novice to expert, and from limbo to legitimacy frameworks. Global outcomes include increased quality of care, patient safety, NP job satisfaction, and decreased turnover. The quality improvement initiative engaged an interprofessional team of institutional and community stakeholders (n = 10) to develop primary products including the residency program, curriculum modules, and the secondary products necessary to implement and evaluate the project. Implementation will consist of a pilot followed by expansion throughout the rural health network. Evaluation will involve the CAH dashboard to monitor patient outcomes, Misener NP job satisfaction scale, and employee turnover rates. The project expands understanding of the on-boarding needs of rural NPs. The results of this project will serve as a guide to publish outcome data and collaborate with higher education to develop programs to award academic credit for paid clinical experiences leading to academic degrees.

The Concrete Rose: A Phenomenological Study of African American Women’s Postgraduate Matriculation Experiences

Soto, Anne-Marie L. 01 January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the educational matriculation experiences of African American (AA) women in pursuance of postgraduate degree status from the pre-kindergarten to doctoral levels. This study used a transcendental phenomenological approach, guided by the following research questions: 1) What are the elements within academia that define and influence the educational experiences for post-graduate degreed AA women? 2) What (if any) challenges to post-graduate degree attainment, were experienced by the population; what meaning do they find in those experiences? And 3) What are the perceptions of this population regarding how their intersecting identities pertaining to race and gender informed their academic experience? To date, there exist exclusions of the African American feminist perspective from mainstream epistemologies and methodologies, and this study aims to fill this gap in research. The analysis of data illuminated “the concrete rose” as the essence of how this population, through their resilience, navigated their postgraduate matriculation experience. Further, the results of the analysis were elucidated through six major themes regarding participant educational experiences: 1) intersectional feminist standpoint, 2) perceptions of hegemony within academic pursuits, 3) motivational influencers, 4) the perspective of historically black colleges and universities and primarily white institutions, 5) notions of visibility, and 6) mentorship and support. The results of this study provide the field of conflict resolution studies a more robust and inclusive framework for understanding the specific needs and experiences of this population through an interdisciplinary lens. The study also provides recommendations for future research, institutional policy and practice for practitioners working with AA female students.

The Bolton Act and its Legacy on Nursing in the Deep South

Traylor-Heard, Nancy Jane 17 August 2013 (has links)
This thesis explores the history of nursing education in the 1940s under the Bolton Act, its effect on the students, and the contribution made by students to lessen the nursing shortage in the Deep South. During World War II, the recruitment of nurses by the military furthered the nursing shortage in the South, which was also plagued by low nursing standards. The Bolton Act helped create a supply of students to serve the southern population and improve educational standards. During training the cadets provided valuable service and after the completion of their training, many entered the nursing profession. By the 1950s and 1960s, the Bolton Act’s legacy had aided in the improvement of nursing education standards, the racial integration in health care, and fought against the post-war nursing shortage.

The utilisation of electronic databases by postgraduate students in the faculty of humanities at the University of Limpopo

Dlamini, Tintswalo Fikile January 2020 (has links)
Thesis (M. A. (Information Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2020 / This study examined whether postgraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Limpopo are aware of, and are using electronic databases optimally to locate information for their academic research. The study employed a quantitative research design through the use of a questionnaire as a data collection method to determine students’ accessibility and levels of awareness of electronic databases; to measure the extent to which they use electronic databases for academic research; to assess the form of training which they attended on the use of electronic databases; to identify factors that determine their usage and non-usage of electronic databases; and to establish challenges that they encounter in using electronic databases. The accidental sampling method was used to select the participants. The study found that most participants are aware of the existence of electronic databases. Even if they indicated to have used some of these databases at UL library, it appears that they are referring to Google and Google Scholar. This is despite the fact that the majority of them showed to have attended some sort of training on the use of electronic databases. Factors that influence their choice and use of specific electronic databases include familiarity, unlimited access, multidisciplinary as well as their capabilities. Problems and challenges encountered in the use of electronic databases are related to remote access. It becomes difficult for them to access these databases when they are not on campus. Lack of knowledge and skills to search these electronic databases effectively hindered their optimal usage. Other problems identified by postgraduate students include: slow internet connectivity; inadequately networked computers; lack of access to low-cost printing facilities in the library; inability to use advanced search strategies on most databases; and a lack of awareness of most e-resources. It is recommended that studies of this nature should be conducted in other faculties so that the library should identify electronic databases that are not used and to consider cancelling subscriptions to unused electronic databases in order to save costs.

Utilisation of reference management software by postgraduate students in the faculty of humanities at the University of Limpopo, South Africa

Motlhake, Thondo Morotola Johanna January 2021 (has links)
Thesis (M. A. (Information Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / The study investigated the awareness towards the and utilisation of Reference Management Software (RMS) by postgraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Limpopo, South Africa. The aim of the study was to examine the awareness and usage of RMS among postgraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities. The study sought to fulfil the following objectives, namely: to describe the types of RMS available for use in university libraries; to determine awareness of RMS by postgraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Limpopo; to measure the extent to which postgraduate students in this faculty use RMS when writing academic papers; to identify the purposes for which the postgraduate students use RMS; and to identify postgraduate students’ perceptions regarding the use of RMS Quantitative research orientation though a survey research design were adopted in the study. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to 320 respondents and a total number of 244 questionnaires were returned and a response rate of 76% was achieved. The findings of the study show that most of the respondents (59%) were aware of the RMS. Most of the postgraduate students became familiar with the software through attending library training. However, the study found that the usage of RMS was low as 45% postgraduate students indicated that they have used RMS before whilst, 55% indicated that they have never used the RMS before. RefWorks remains the most popular used software among postgraduate students. Most of the respondents’ reason for using RMS amongst others was because they have received training, and some mentioned the fact that it was the only RMS they were familiar with. The study also found that the respondents use RMS to cite sources for assignments, research and papers, as well as to create reference list and collect and organise citations. The study revealed that the respondents like RMS because it assists and improves referencing. The study recommends for an intensified library training by academic librarians so that students should know advanced features of the RMS.

Feeling the Pulse: An Exploration of the Emotional Effects of Competency-Based Medical Education in Psychiatry

Sinha, Sakshi January 2024 (has links)
Introduction: Competency-based medical education (CBME) is a learner-centered outcomes-based approach. Competence by Design (CBD) is a hybrid time-based and outcomes-based CBME model that was adopted by all Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada-based residency training programs, with the primary objective of enhancing postgraduate medical education quality. However, preliminary findings suggest that residents experience higher levels of stress, anxiety, and exhaustion in CBD than with previous curricula. This thesis aims to identify and understand the emotional effects of CBME on residents, faculty, and administrative staff. Methods: This study used a qualitative approach, specifically hermeneutic phenomenology. Seven residents, six faculty members (several with education leadership roles), and one administrative staff member from a postgraduate Psychiatry program were recruited. Participants underwent semi-structured, one-on-one interviews where they were probed on their emotions with CBME. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed using a line-by-line approach that generated individual meaning units and, subsequently, themes. Results: Five themes were identified: 1) Education is an emotional experience; 2) The emotional toll of CBD; 3) CBD is a failed educational promise—Expectations vs. realities; 4) Structural and administrative burdens of CBD; and 5) Survival of educational demands—The quest for coping. Participants initially struggled to articulate their emotions, but expressed surprise at realizing they did have strong, often negative, emotions related to CBD. There was also a dissonance identified between the anticipated benefits and the execution of CBD. Furthermore, participants highlighted administrative and structural challenges of CBD, specifically regarding Entrustable Professional Activities, which were a burden and lacked much educational value. Participants discussed using various coping strategies to manage CBD’s demands. Conclusion: The findings of this work suggest that CBD has a negative emotional impact on residents and faculty, specifically due to tension between CBD’s theoretical benefits and its practical challenges, including increased emotional burden and structural challenges. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc) / Competency-based medical education (CBME) is a learner-centered outcomes-based approach.

Chirotto, Amanda Russo 04 September 2014 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-12-03T18:35:30Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Amanda_Russo_Chirotto.pdf: 2463342 bytes, checksum: e853ab3413087ef6feae9bdab1270480 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-09-04 / The conceptual basis of the Human Capital Theory determines that one individual, upon acquiring more knowledge and skills, would increase their human capital value, and consequently increase their employability, productivity and income potential. Another important factor is that investment in education leads to an increase in future income, and would have the individual stand out in the society in the form of welfare and technological innovation (CUNHA; CORNACCHIONE JUNIOR; MARTINS, 2010). Considering this assumption, this study aimed to analyze the influence of the master s degree in alumni of the Accounting Sciences course from FECAP from the perspective of the Human Capital Theory. Therefore, a descriptive research was conducted, which used a quantitative and qualitative approach, comprising three steps: a) field survey with a questionnaire applied to all the alumni who graduated until August 30, 2013; b) document analysis of curriculum Lattes of all alumni who responded to the questionnaire, and c) inquiries of alumni PhD to analyze their professional, academic and social trajectory after the Master s degree. The sample comprised 180 alumni with Master s degree and 4 PhD. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and analysis of interview transcripts. The survey results allowed us to identify that Masters in Accounting Sciences from FECAP are mostly male, mean age of 47 years, married, with children, residents in the city of S??o Paulo and majored in Accounting Sciences, whose main paid activity are the market and academy, most are employed in the private sector and have compensation exceeding R$ 9,000.00. The survey showed that there is an improvement in the salary range upon completion of the course. However, men receive the highest remuneration. When considering the main paid activity, data showed that the market pays better than the academy. Most chose the master's degree aiming to expand the possibilities of work, for personal fulfillment and satisfaction and to join and/or ascend the teaching profession. The main factors perceived by FECAP masters as most influenced by the master title (CUNHA, J. V. A., 2007) were: academic spirit, professional differentiation, analytical skills, employability, career opportunities, respectability and academic/professional recognition. When performing the factor analysis, three factors were obtained, considering only ten variables: Factor 1 - nominated Personal Satisfaction, Factor 2 - nominated Employability and Compensation and Factor 3 - nominated Professional Highlight. The academic contribution of FECAP masters focuses on the guidance and participation in examination boards. By analyzing the professional, academic and social history of the PhD in Accounting Sciences, we detected that respondents recognize their role as researchers and the importance of scientific production to society. It is possible to consider that the title has positively influenced FECAP alumni considering the factors recommended by the Human Capital Theory. However, it is still necessary to improve their participation in higher education institutions and their role as researchers, to increase scientific production.
