Rondeau, Kim 01 1900 (has links) (PDF)

Avaliação da estabilidade no exercício long stretch front do pilates

Santos, Artur Bonezi dos January 2018 (has links)
Trunk stability is usually challenged during Pilates method ’sessions. The stability/instability, generated by altering springs or by the practitioner’s experience level during a Pilates exercise, has great impact in trunk control. Following a systematic review, it was observed that modelling is the main biomechanical technique applied for understanding trunk stability. Hence, this study aimed to develop and evaluate a biomechanical model for quantifying and compare trunk stability in two different Pilates practitioners levels and two different intensities of the exercise during Pilates’ long stretch front exercise. The long stretch front exercise, created for using the powerhouse and challenging trunk stability, is performed in the reformer apparatus, keeping the trunk in the plunk position while shoulder extension is performed. The movement was modelled as a spring-mass system using stiffness (K) as the parameter to express trunk stability. Model input consisted of kinematics data, obtained from infrared cameras images, kinetic data, from load cells attached to the reformer equipment, and anthropometric data, obtained from literature. Fifteen experienced and 15 beginner Pilates practitioners, who performed ten repetitions of the exercise in two difficulty levels, with one and two springs, were evaluated. Experienced subjects were more stable during the exercise when compared to beginners F(1.28)=7.965; η2=0.22; p=0.009. The exercise performed using two springs presented a lower rigidity level when compared to one spring F(1.28)=67.891; η2=0.71; p<0.001. There was no interaction between the factors , F(1.28)=0.587; η2=0.02; p=0.450. When groups were compared separately for each difficulty level, experienced (K=272 ± 27 Nm.rad-1) presented higher rigidity than beginners (K=171 ± 42 Nm.rad-1) using one spring, and also using two springs with K=196 ± 17 Nm.rad-1 for experienced performers and K=108 ± 21 Nm.rad-1 for beginners. Concludes that the proposed model is capable of quantifying stability during the Pilates long stretch front exercise using rigidity coefficient. In addition model identifies differences between more or less experienced subjects, as well as when the exercise is performed using one or two springs.

A study of the notions of immersive experience in museum based exhibitions.

Lorentz, Diana. January 2006 (has links)
University of Technology, Sydney. Faculty of Design, Architecture & Building. / The thesis explores the notions of immersive experience in museum exhibitions, and examines whether the communication of the exhibition content can be transmitted more effectively to visitors through the creation of an immersive environment. The study reviews the origins and changing interpretations of the term 'immersive experience', and draws upon the work of researchers including Heim (1998) and Bitgood (1990) to examine immersive experience in the context of museum exhibitions. The role of narrative in enhancing immersive experience in exhibitions is explored through the work of researchers including Hooper-Greenhill (2000) and the ideas of Joseph Campbell on myth, story telling, and the concept of 'hero'. Theories of effective communication and learning in the museum context are examined, as well as formal strategies that can be undertaken by museums to inform and facilitate communication and learning for the experience of the visitor. The author employs the methodology of 'participant observation', using her experience as Senior Designer at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney to reflect on the aspects of multi-sensory stimulation required for the communication process in an exhibition, and on what is achieved by the implementation of new technology into museum exhibition spaces. A number of exhibitions designed at the Powerhouse Museum by the author are used as case studies. The major outcome of the study is a theoretical framework on immersive experience that may be applied by museum designers and curators to enhance communication experience for visitors to exhibitions, or may be used by educators to enhance learning experiences for groups who use museums as learning environments. The thesis concludes with some ideas for further research in the area of immersive experience in the museum, including the development of a methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of immersive experiences created by museum designers.

O Magic Circle aumenta a atividade eletromiográfica abdominal e a pressão intravaginal no exercício The Hundred do Método Pilates?

Paulitsch, Alessandra Fayh January 2013 (has links)
The Pilates method is based on the centering principle, in which every movement starts and is supported by the center of the body, called strong core or powerhouse. In order to help the practitioner locate the powerhouse and increase the control and recruitment of its muscles, Joseph Pilates created the accessory Magic Circle, which consists of a flexible ring, approximately 40cm wide, used, among other purposes, to increase abdominal muscle activity in some exercises of the Pilates Method. The aim of this study was to compare the abdominal electromiographic activity, as well as to analyze intra-vaginal pressure in the exercises The Hundred and The Hundred modified, performed with and without the accessory Magic Circle. The study simultaneously analyzed the electomiographic signal on the surface of the rectus abdominis, external oblique, internal oblique, aductor longus, as well as intra-vaginal pressure during the performance of the exercises The Hundred and The Hundred modified with and without the use of the Magic Circle. There was higher activity on the abdominal muscles only when the Magic Circle was used in instability situations, while the intra-vaginal pressure was not affected by the use of the accessory. The Magic Circle can be recommended for higher activation of the abdominal muscles in mechanical instability situations and is not recommended when pursuing higher intravaginal pressure.

Evaluation of a Participant Co-designed Lifestyle Change Program for Youth

Alharbi, Basmah Saleh 05 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Introduction: Increasing obesity in children leads to an increase in the risk of Type 2 diabetes (T2D). Therefore, it is important to promote healthier lifestyles in youths and encourage their caregivers(s) to provide a healthy lifestyle environment. The PowerHouse program focuses on improving food choices, increasing physical activity, and adopting behavior changes for the reduction of obesity and the prevention of T2D. Method: The aim of this study was to assess the effects of implementing the PowerHouse program on both clinical and quality of life outcomes in high-risk, low-income youth and their caregivers. Primary outcomes were BMI standard deviation and BMI percentile in youths. Secondary outcomes included physical activity of youths and quality of life for both youths and their caregivers. Attendance rates were also calculated. Linear effect mixed models were used to test for time effects for all outcomes. Results: Clinical outcomes did not improve over time, except for youth HbA1c (p-value = 0.0447). Some improvements in youth quality-of-life outcomes were noted: specifically, the Sports Index score of the Fels Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children (adjusted p-value = 0.0213) and the Physical Summary (p-value = 0.0407), Psychosocial Summary (p-value = 0.0167), and Total score (p-value = 0.0094) for the youth-reported Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory. Quality of life did not change over time for caregivers. For attendance, there was an improvement after the intervention was modified to improve access to fresh produce (p-value = 0.0002). Conclusion: HbA1c and quality of life improved over time for youth; however, there was not an improvement in caregiver outcomes over time. The data suggest that more time may be needed to see the full effects of the intervention, and/or that a booster intervention may be needed.
